What‘s the advantage of having a coalition instead of just „cross-teaming“ without being in one? Pro of not being in one is that you can sell resources to each other or declare war here and there to give each other cities and so. And you could also trick other nations with crazy surprise attacks, since they don‘t know you have teammates. Con is you can‘t have a coalition win. So if I want to have a coalition win I can just create it in the endgame after we used all the advantages of not being in one. So what would be the reason to have one in the early game?
Protection early game, early game there is more luck involved so minimizing the chances of losing there is good
You don't need a coalition. You can even join different coalitions to share intelligence with each other. But then victory will be too easy, it’s boring.
The only reason for a coalition in the early game by a pre-formed team of players it's telling the world that you're here and they should be afraid.

You are missing the point: the comment I replied to implied that the trade would be between coalition members. That is plain false. If you set up your ask/bid preperly then you may get the intended trade, but not because you are in a coalition!

Yeah that is normal market action which has nothing to do with being in coalition, which is the context of the OP. But you cannot specifically do trading with coalition members (in publilc games).
