Hey y’all! does anyone know of any environmental justice volunteer-based organizations that are Columbus? Ones that’ll actually have you doing impactful volunteer work
environmental justice volunteer-based organization in Columbus?
Don’t even need to sign up for that, just get a bag, nifty nabbers and a neon vest.
I’m pretty sure ORDC does that. But sometimes there is Kick butt columbus which is part of keep ohio beautiful
I don’t know if I’d call it environmental justice but Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed (FLOW) does a lot of hands on volunteer work that I think is impactful. Invasive removals, trash pickups, tree nursery maintenance, etc. The tree nursery doles out trees in the fall to those who want them. I forget if they’re free or paid, but I know Green Columbus does the tree nursery as well and they’re localized in neighborhoods like Linden or Hungarian Village with the goal of increasing tree canopy in those areas
Do you mean organizations that use lawsuits as their leverage, like Earth Justice or Environmental Defense Fund (neither of which have chapters, AFAIK), or do you mean groups that advocate or lobby for better public and corporate policies?
Ohio Environmental Council may be able to point you in the right direction.
Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District! They do organized group cleanups in waterways. The website seems to suck on mobile but contact someone and I bet they can connect you. OR visit Facebook for their upcoming events/activities.
Most orgs focused on environmental Justice aren’t relying on free labor when folks doing the hard work deserve to get paid. There’s plenty of advocacy orgs in town that are sorta neoliberal feel good orgs. But I wouldn’t call them environmental justice orgs.
Sunrise Columbus
Yeah there’s a lot of trash on the highways, I’m not sure who picks that up, but they must be short staffed.
