![El Paso County, CO has the 3rd highest rate of drowsy driving fatalities in the U.S. (out of counties with 500,000+ people).](https://external-preview.redd.it/-MIC4HiePkNf91hkC_GG74ks7QnWZNasXlrSjmUUwzw.jpg?auto=webp&s=d7402eaa9f5403da63068f1f279c0e8c79378095)

I know, it's insane. Long stretches of nothingness probably plays a big role.
I mean it makes sense, I've made the drive from San Antonio to here, fuck that. Never doing that one again, straight flat and all you see is the occasional oil well.
Yeah, I've done a decent amount of driving in Texas. The endless road starts playing tricks on you.
Listen to a good podcast
Yes, and there are two lane highways with no shoulders out there that have speed limits of 75 mph.
Yep, and they always drop to 35 mph through the small towns where the cops will be waiting since they have nothing better to do. Got pulled over for 40 in a 35 like 500 feet after the limit changed lol
lol got stopped in Harker Heights (the "posh" town near Ft. Hood), not kidding like 1/4 mile before the speed limit increased to 65. I started speeding up when I saw the sign rather than after I already passed it.
Look man… I’m just a sleepy dude. Why ya gotta bring me into it
It’s a military town we work all hours. Let me guess Fayetteville NC might be on that list too. Killeen Tx?
There are more than 3 large military towns in the US tho. Definitely larger than COS.
I’m not going to list them all. I’m sure any town with significant populations of shift workers will have similar results.
Yeah agree
The vast majority of the military the vast majority of the time does not work all hours.
Space Ops does, and there is a lot of that. They are actually moving away from having permanent daystaff.
I'm surprised to see PG County MD on the list, but not MoCo. Same area, filled with DC commuters.
I know PG has been changing over the past couple decades, but back in the day I was wide awake anytime I traversed the county.
As soon as I get into my car I start yawning, it’s so boring…. I hate driving.
My guess would be: A lot of people commute to Denver. That drive is BRUTAL. Add low oxygen due to high altitude and probably untreated sleep apnea. I was recently diagnosed but it took FOREVER, the sleep clinics here are either hot garbage (looking at you, Optum), or it takes weeks or even months to get in. A LOT of people here have sleep apnea.
That’s cause of all the meth
It’s not the flat land or anything else that causes drowsiness it’s lack of sleep period your body is amazing and if tired enough will sleep when necessary
This is what happens when the high paying non-government, private sector, better jobs are not in your city.
As someone from West Texas who has driven all those counties roads, there is nothing out there. Towns at least 40 or 50 miles apart, and most of these stats are probably people caming ack from the DFW area, which is an extremely boring drive.
OP is referring to El Paso County, CO, not El Paso, TX.
Although Texas is all over this graphic!
That was my first thought. Just did my 2nd treck from DFW to COS and that stretch through west Texas is pretty brutal
No worse than Wyoming or Nebraska tbh.
I drove from el paso tx to cheyenne once, with only stops for gas. It wasn't a good idea.
Also, people here need to drink more water.
It would help if half the people on the road weren’t high on pot.
Lmao I can tell you don’t smoke because you refer to it as pot, but nothing will make you more hyper aware of yourself or other drivers than a small toke before getting behind the wheel. I personally never smoke before I drive because I’d be at fault no matter what if I got into an accident but it’s pretty telling how you are okay with booze being legal, but go after “pot” as causing car accidents
Geez, look at TX, 3 out of the 4 #1's are there and then a shitton more.
