Does anyone remember the band Shooting Star? They had two amazing albums in ‘80 and ‘81, numerous songs that got a lot of radio play on rock stations back then.
Hang on for Your Life.
Yesssss!
I totally forgot this ever happened.
Saw them live. They warmed up for Molly Hatchet. Good show, the Kettle Drums used in their finale "Last Chance" were a great touch. Singer actually jumped off stage, ran out about half way through the crowd then up into empty side bleachers where the Kettle's were set and played that part. No recordings, they used the real thing.
This could be your last chance...to believe in yourself, your last chance...
They are still touring. The current Lead singer is Todd Petty Grove.
LOL! My wife kept insisting that I knew this band. I kept telling her that it was a song by Bad Company. Then my sister-in-law popped up with a couple of their tapes. To this day, I still don’t know anything about them.
I immediately thought of the Bad Company song too, which was contemporary with this, relatively at least.
You should listen to some of their music. It’s really good, I don’t know what happened to them or why they don’t play it anymore.
Just brought them up on Spotify. Sounds a little like Y&T, another great but forgotten group.
Love ‘em. I saw them in 81 or 82. They’re still around. They just played at a small club in Cincinnati back in March but I was unable to attend.
He's only flesh and blood.. Saw them in '81 Electric violin baby!
The original lead singer is now the lead singer for Kansas since Steve Walsh retired.
Ronnie Platt, the current lead singer of Kansas joined Shooting Star in 2007. So he was once the lead singer of Shooting Star, but not the original.
The original lead singer died in 2018.
Holy shit — died of complications from West Nile Virus.
Came to say this. Big shoes to fill!
I stand corrected. Thanks.
Tonight!!!
Great band. Saw them live in the early 80s.
Me, too. Out of Kansas City. They were big in St. Louis on the radio (KSHE 95) and I saw them several times in concerts in the area in the 80s
One of my favorite bands
Yes! Love them! Last Chance and Flesh and Blood are still in my Spotify rotation as well as Hollywood.
Saw them in Tulsa on their 3 Wishes tour 1982 or so. “Last Chance” is definitely one rocking tune. I have a couple of LP’s and a CD of theirs. The lead singer and primary song writer Van McLain pasted away in 2018. A sad day to be sure as he was a very good man and artist.
Recognized the name. Pretty sure my brother had one of their albums. Couldn't remember any of their songs until I hit the comments. Now I can't wait to listen to Last Chance. I loved that song.
Worked at my college radio station around that time. We played the shit out of Hollywood and Hang On For Your Life.
Oh wow. I used to DJ at my college radio station back then, too, and played "Last Chance" a lot even though it didn't really fit my format (new music like The Stranglers, Gang of Four, Modern English, Lene Lovich, Fabulous Poodles, etc.)
I just know of one song by them that used to play on the radio called Straight Ahead. It was a great song tho
"Straight Ahead..straight into the fire.."
I saw them open for ZZ Top!
Straight ahead.
Even more obscure. Missouri :)
I thought I was the only one. I actually have their first album, pretty much irreplaceable.
Don't forget the Rainmakers.
It is a great one. Too bad they really didn’t catch. They’re still are puns though. I only brought them up here due to Ron West and Gary West being brothers.
I had a friend in H.S. who would play "Breakout" non-stop in the damn car.
Great song. I always loved Hollywood too
That’s the one song I remember.
I really liked III Wishes (1982)... 'Where You Gonna Run' is my favorite song from them.
Man, do I miss this era! Such great music.
Hang on to your life is on my playlist, along with tonight and bring it on.
What one song would I recognize?
Do I!?!?!? That was the album that kind of defined our senior year in high school, although there were so many great albums in 81!!! I still have the album but not a record player
Never heard of this band, I was 20 in 1980 and into rock. Were they more popular in their local area? Like The Michael Stanley Band in Cleveland, Iron City Houserockers in Pittsburgh ...
I loved the Michael Stanley Band-big in St. Louis, too
Wow! Hey thanx! I'd forgotten that I loved this band! Picking some up on Amazon now...
I know one of their former drummers and had met several of the other guys. They are still playing around the KC area and you should catch a show!
CSB: my first wife and I saw them at a rock festival headlined by Heart. A couple of the Shooting Star guys hung out with us after their set to also watch Heart.
No
If this is the same band I remember, they used to practice in a garage in New Mark. We would hang around and party with them. And we ended up being roadies for them. Too long ago to recall all of the details.
Saw them open for Starship in 83.
If you like bands like this, check out my friends. Youtube channel grants rockwarehaus. They do reviews on great bands like this😎👍💯🎼
Hang on for your Life
I like the whole Hang On For Your Life album, especially Teaser.
The only song I remember of theirs that played on the radio in my area (Chicago) was, "Hollywood".
They're responsible for the longest time it took me to figure out a snippet of song lyric stuck in my head.
I had "so let the chips fall where they may fall" in my head for years trying to figure out what song/group it came from. My mind kept moving towards Genesis. I was finally put out of my misery when I heard "Breakout" again after a decade.
Just jamming them this weekend on my buddy's front porch. I told him I want "Last Chance" played at my memorial. I was drunk and bumming about a few people dying in my family and circle of friends.
I grew up in Kansas City and saw them several times (mainly at Memorial Hall). Great Band. For a deep cut, check out Train Rolls On.
I have one of their records. I think they recorded in Memphis.
Yeah they were pretty good. They were basically Kansas’ little brother that had a few decent hits but never really lived up to the hype of their big brother lol I like them though.
I remember Shooting Star by Bad Company
Johnny was a schoolboy when he heard his first Beatles song
That was the song Shooting Star by Bad Company, not the group Shooting Star.
I know, but the song came first and was very memorable, it still holds up today unlike a lot of other music from back then
Bad Company with Rogers at the helm really does stand up, because it was always kind of on its own as a sound.
No they didn't.
Stand up on your feet... cuz your life is short as hell. You could be dead tomorrow... today may be your
LAST CHANCE!!
Great song!
