For the past month I’ve noticed a weird almost mechanical noise coming from the woods behind Mountain Creek Road, up against signal Mountain. It can be heard not just at my apartment but at a few other ones. I’ve talked to a couple other people that live in other complexes and they are also just as curious as I am. Has anyone heard?
Definitely cicadas. It's the sheer density of them all screaming at the same time throughout the woods. It's crazy how many are out there.
Are people hearing them in e brained too? I hear them every year, but not so far this year.
I’m not hearing them either and I’m disappointed. I hear them all around Chatt while driving but not at my house.
In my area, I always hear them in mid June. Hopefully it will be the same this year. I've just never seen other people post about it this early, so I got a little worried. Wonder why there would be a month difference in the same basic area?

It's periodical cicadas. A 17-year brood hatched this year, and that is the sound they make. There are also other cicadas that are making the more normal cicada noises, but the metallic hum is from the periodical brood that comes out in droves once every 17 years.
Actually we're only getting the 13 year XIX brood around here, not the 17 year brood. 13 year broods are more common in the warmer southern states where 17 year broods are more common in the northern states where it's colder. There is some overlap area in the Midwest where they're getting both this year, but that's not us in Chattanooga.
Brood XIX is made up of four different species of cicada and that's where the different sounds come from.
Thank you, I keep messing the numbers up. I am very glad we are not in the overlap region for the broods, my windshield wiper fluid is already getting low, lol. However, they are a fascinating genus, and I actually enjoy the noise for the relatively brief amount of time they exist here in their adult form.

Brood 19 cicadas.
Drove from Chattanooga to Trenton yesterday and as soon as I hit browns ferry road they were fired up all the way to Trenton.
Good news is that they should be done in about 3 weeks.

I went on a run at Camp Jordan last week and couldn’t believe how loud they were out there. Happy they’ll be gone soon
