I am seriously going to miss having a government, that whilst still bourgoise and capitalist, at least pretended to give a toot about LGBTQ2IA+ rights, Indigenous people, the working class, the environment, etc. Conservatives will soon take the lead and head us into MAGAland. I'm going to miss living in a country that respects immigrants, women, Queer people, people with disabilities, etc.
Trudeau gets a ton of slack for inflation and housing prices but inflation is a global phenomenon, and housing construction is blocked by the Premiers, not the Prime Minister. In fact Trudeau has tried incentivizing local municipalities to build more houses, but they turn down his money thanks to NIMBYism and Boomers. Trudeau has tried to help renters like myself and then when Conservatives block it, he gets blamed.
Trudeau has pushed for legalization of sex-work, has helped institute MAID, got us through Covid-19 with safety measures, supported Trans Rights, protects our environment, etc. I can't think of a single downside to him. And soon all this progress will be for null.
He’s had some positives, but he has also led us to lots of problems.
Incomes under Trudeau have stagnated quite a bit. For example, in 2013 Americans made $9k more annually (per the world bank). In 2022, that figure doubled to $18k. A big factor behind this is lagging Canadian productivity, which he hasn’t helped improve at all.
As for housing, I totally agree the provinces have also blocked development, but you seem to absolve Trudeau completely… per the CMHC, In 2023 there were around 220k housing starts, vs 1.3 million in terms of growth of population (per Reuters with 97.6% being from international migration).
Basic supply and demand would denote that Trudeau’s policies would put upwards pressure on housing prices. Additionally, to satiate endless corporate greed, the influx of low-skilled labour who’s willing to work for lower wages drives down the equilibrium wage.
