Sorry, I'm sure recommendation are asked multiple times a week, but I'm looking at getting my first camera and have whittled it down to the Nikon Z50 (my preferred choice, environmental sealed being a big plus) vs the Canon EOS R10. Both similarly priced currently. Has anyone got an opinion or first hand experience? For reference, I'll be taking pictures of my children, dogs, and general landscape/holiday/lifestyle shots. Thanks.
I think lens selection is a huge determining factor for picking out a camera. For a long time, the Canon R-mount stuff was locked down so you couldn't get 3rd party lenses. That's a big deal when you consider how good lenses from Tamron and Sigma are. Nearly everyone with an APS-C mirrorless camera has one of the Sigma Contemporary lenses because they are so good and affordable. The Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 is my go-to recommendation when someone needs a good standard zoom lens on APS-C. Point goes to Nikon.
When it comes to both cameras, I'm not really a fan of the Z50 itself. It feels a little cheap. That's not bad for your first big kid camera, but if you've been in the hobby/profession for a while, that might scare you off. The Zfc feels like a better version of the Z50, but it also feels a little try hard with it's retro styling.
I'd say to go for the Z50 or look at some other options from Sony or Fujifilm.
I bought an R10 when it came out and I'm making the switch to Sony after just one year. I thought I wouldn't get frustrated adapting older lenses/springing for the 1st party ones, but I was wrong. The other comments are right, find the lenses you need and select the body from there.
Check if you can find any deals for Nikon. During their summer promotion in Germany, the difference between Z50 and Z5 was only 300 euros. Z5 is a vastly better system for relatively minor price increase.
I love my Nikon and the Z mount, but the lack of an AF joystick on the Z50 would really annoy me. If you're willing to carry the larger/heavier glass of full frame, the Z5 is a phenomenal camera for not much more money. Also, it's highly recommended to buy used/factory refurbed products. KEH and MPB are two of the better know used retailers.
Thanks for the advice. Amazon the Z50 and a 16-50mm lense is £799 On MPB, the camera is 605. I'll check other cameras up to and around £800 later today.
You might be able to do a Z5 and 24-70 f/4 for around 800, I'm not super familiar with prices in the UK. I'd also recommend adding the 40mm f/2 for low light and indoor.
I love Nikon but I just dont like the Z50. The higher end Z cams are pretty awesome tho- I would go for the R10.
Check out the Fuji X-T30 too! Right in the same price range
Have a look at the lenses (and maybe the flashes) that are compatible with each and then work backward from there. Pick your lens/lenses and then grab the body that suits them.
