I’m lucky - I have a lovely friend who, upon learning how let down I was as a child, was awestruck that I had my shit so ‘together’ and made a big point to shine light on the matter for me. I hadn’t ever really given myself credit for it and it all became part of a process of acknowledging the situation, experiencing some of the associated negative emotions and appreciating the positive outcomes despite the setbacks. It’s helped a lot when communicating with my because he hadn’t really understood how impactful these things had been either. I sort of assumed our childhoods were more similar than they were but he had loads more structure and discipline. He had a different type of neglect, I should say.
