![What do you do with your tiny scraps](https://preview.redd.it/fc6d0jvdijad1.jpeg?auto=webp&s=b057654e3f5eb221bb62b021611c00ebf107ccec)
I put them in the yarn bottle
I put them in the yarn bottle
Came to say the same. They're in a Ziploc baggie!
I got a little mini rolling garbage bin w/ flip lid from the dollar store. My husband makes fun of me for it.
This is revolutionary š²
It's hysterical looking. It's almost full too so I need to stuff some things and start a fire.
That is badass I wish he didnāt make fun of it
Nah, he's allowed. He's not being serious, he just finds it super funny.
I have this for my circuit scraps!
I have one of these too! I love it.
I keep an old kleenex box that I shove all my scraps in!
Thought I was the only one!
Naw you aināt but I gotta use garbage bags š¬
You can even needle felt them into little hearts like Build-A-Bear plushies
I do the same thing with my long furbies. I like the thought that each furby has a ton of little furby bits inside.
Itās wild how long furbys became a trend!
I stumbled upon them by accident and it was all over for me from there. My 4.5 foot crocheted one is almost done, just waiting for the faceplate to finish printing so I can paint it and add the eyes.
had to google ālong furbyā ā¦ was not disappointed
This is what popped up when i googled it. And my immediate thought was "what's long about that?", then decided I dont want to know.
Absolutely. First I line the pockets of my project bag with scraps as they are amassed. When the stockpile becomes unmanageable, I know it's time to make something for the kids.
I do this too but it they are going to children I buy cheap hosiery and stuff them in there then but it in the project. I saw one of the kids stick their little fingers in between and took some yarn out. The hosiery also allows me to shape the dolls how I want.
I do the same, specifically when I make these for friends/the animal shelter:
https://tubachingching.wordpress.com/2008/05/06/easy-peasy-catnip-mouse/
Same here!
Iāve never heard of this, thatās an amazing idea!!
I've told my mom like 10 times that I save yarn scraps to use as stuffing and I would like to use her fabric scraps for the same thing and she always just throws it all away. :| Even when I have it all specifically placed somewhere!
I use a wire brush, brush them out into fibres, and use them for needlefelting faces and small details!
I've also seen others brush out the fibres and rewind into new yarn.
I use a metal pet brush and maybe a hair straighter to make doll hair
Caution to anyone who thinks they want to try this, acrylic yarn melts!
I like this idea! I've used a pet brush to brush out fluff around the neck before with yarn but I'll need to try dolls!
Omg so smart
Don't give me too much credit- I saw the idea on instagram and then it became a habit!
Fine, I'll get a felting needle
It's honestly not too hard to get into <3 I bought a variety pack on amazon for cheap, and just messed around till I found what I like.
I usually brush out long strands of wool carefully from bottom to top, knots holding them in place. After straightening with an hair iron, they work great as amigurumi hair/fur. So I'm not entirely unfamiliar with the process
Oh I mean like the needlefelting itself, sorry!
It sounds like you're putting way more care into your brushing than my haphazard stripping, hah!
You can also get kits that are pretty inexpensive to do an actual needle felting project and get a stupidly high number of felting needles. I got like 15 in one kit! Two sizes!
!!! That's way better than what I did! I'll have to take a look!!
Ohhh, that's smart. I haven't seen that before but now I want to learn how to do it.
It's honestly not too terribly hard to do. It's a little fussy when you're still learning, so I'd suggest with simple things like the white shine in the eye, or spots on the back. I've been doing this for years and I still sometimes need to rip it all out and start over!
I'm trying the new yarn thing right now. I saved all my scraps under a certain length for a few months and used a drop spindle to make them into a very chaotic new yarn (longer scraps went into a designated "scrap hat" that also ends up all kinds of bonkers colors).
Usually I lose them in the carpet then freak out months later thinking it's a centipede but no, it's just yarn doodles lol
WHAT IS THIS PURPLE WORM AAAAHHH rofl
Stuff them at the bottom of my yarn bag and get mad when I pull a skein out and there's little bits stuck to it š¤£
So real haha I donāt know why I keep doing this
Theyāre in a jar probably never to be used but I NEED to keep them!
Same. I make a jar for each year so I can see the color trends I went through.
Okay but that's a really lovely idea!!
We call them schnipsels! We also put them in an empty jar. Sometimes I think about using them as stuffing. My ex called them stringettes, from a Monty Python skit I guess?
My wife does crossstitch and she calls it an ort jar. If you save up enough yarn you can use it to stuff an amigurumi.
Yes, the Ort Jar is the correct term.
I carded them, handspun new yarn and knit a scrappy cowl š
Send them to Hedgehog fiber to be reused and you get a discount.
I keep mine in a ziploc but a jar is probably prettier š¤£ then I just use them to stuff my pillows (Iāve been making tapestry pillows a lot lately)
They decorate my floor until I see one of these posts and start collecting them in a jar. Then my kids steal the jar and use them to decorate my floor š
If theyāre super short, I have a little box I put them in, and use them as stuffing. If theyāre a little longer, but not enough to make anything with by itself, I tie them together and make a cool little colorful monster amigurumi with it.
I did this once! I took all my little scraps that were long enougj to tie together and over the years I had enough for a quilt! Now every winter my husband is subjected to the most gosh ugly but warm scraps quilt on our bed!
Garbage. If it's a yarn I didn't like or don't have enough of to make anything reasonable, it goes straight in the garbage.
I have an empty ornament I got from the craft store back in 2020. I put scraps in there and when it is eventually full, it will go on the Christmas tree. I like having an assortment of ornaments that are either sentimental or symbolic (tea cups, things I made, etc). The plan is to do some building of the collection now so the tree isnāt bare, and then REALLY get into building the collection once I have kids who have art projects to add
The right yarn at a decent length makes for good old fashioned stitch markers. Mine get tiny-binder clipped together for added security.
But I now own actual stitch markers so I have no valid excuse for keeping them.
I feel like actual stitch markers take up space and add space between switches so I use all my scraps for markers
Oh good point! I have been making open airy big-hook mesh type pieces. I can see how a completely different kind of piece would make more sense using scrap. Whew! Now I can keep them for a reason.
I did my first project a couple weeks ago of using yarn as a stitch marker and it is SO AMAZING. Trained eyes can still see where each round starts but it's much less obvious than when you use actual stitch markers.
I first saw someone using yarn when I was watching YouTube videos to learn how to knit in the round! I'm attempting my first sweater and it's really nice to have markers between each section of cables
Scatter them all over my house then grumble about how there are yarn scraps everywhere
I have mine sorted by type since i tend to get the same 2-4 blends (acrylic/alpaca wool/silks/alpaca-silk blend) for brushing out and making new yarn with once i have enough
I don't do amiguri so stuffing doesn't work for me
I save them for "later" lol i think I've actually remembered to use them as stuffing 2 or 3 times
Stuffie filler
Stuffing!
I have a bottle for each year.
Reuse for stuffing lol
This isnāt helpful but once I shoved all my scraps into an empty bottle of sprite that I took from a friend who was asleep
Use them as snacks when you're feeling peckish
Save em up and use em to stuff small amigurumi with :>
Stuffing
I put them outside for nearby birds to use for nests
Omg i didnt realize!! Thanks!!!!!!
Same! I thought I was HELPING little birds... Ooooops!
I do the same! One for yarn and one for thread
Let me guess, you have a cat who once had to be put on intestinal blockage watch after eating an puking a bunch of yarn?
My cat really isn't a chewer, more of a scratcher.
It's more to do with the fact that when i try to throw it out it pretty much flies out of the trash can.
And i need shelf decor
When my youngest was out of her mind on pain meds after being spayed, she ate about 6 yards of acrylic yarn and vomited it up. I really havenāt crocheted much since then because Iām so anxious about making sure every bit of yarn is zipped or sealed awayā¦.
Honestly if youāre looking for the long run, i tie substantial scraps (that arenāt knotted to hell) to eachother and make a scrap ball of all the colors.
i tie them together using a square knot. so iāve amassed around 80 grams of miscellaneous yarn (its all acrylic) and wound it into a ball of colourful goodness. no idea how long iāll keep up the practice or what iāll make once i decide itās enough, but itās fun nonetheless.
Oh a bottle for storage is such a good idea! Dunno why I hadnt thought of it yet, I've just been stuffing them in my yarn drawer XD
If the scraps are long enough, you can incorporate them into your work for pops of color. You can use them to stuff small projects like amigurumi or anything that needs stuffing. Perfect for filling awkward corners. You can use them to felt or even to seam holes. Even crochet tiny squares or whatever to add.
The possibilities are endless. šš»
If I have longer pieces, I do scrappy projects. Works perfectly for it!
If mine are long enough I use them to make crazy yarn. I tie together end to end and when it is big enough Iāll have figured out what I want to make with it by then. The smaller of the scraps I keep in a zip lock and Iāll figure that out later. Probably stuffing or another craft or gift to a friend that crafts. Small yarn pieces chopped up super fine to dust make good flocking.
Pillow stuffing āØ
I fill old candle jars, intend on using them to fill amigurumi, never make said amigurumi, horde candle jars full of yarn scarps until we move again and I need to declutter, repeat.
I had a bunch then gave them to a friend who does more amigurumi than I do
quick snack for later
Ive seen people put them in clear Christmas baubles and hand on the tree
Felting!
Witch bottle. Bury it at the corners of your property. The idea is that bad energies get trapped finding the ends of all the yarn. Add any pins and broken needles and salt.
Historical witch bottles have pee (did you see that episode of antiques road show), but any vinegar should be fine.
I use them as stitchmarkers.
I tie long scraps together to make a ratty ball of yarn that I crochet cat toys with, then I stuff them with the smaller scraps and donate them to the local animal shelter!
I throw them away. If Iām forward-thinking enough with WIPs, Iāll use them to stuff the occasional amigurumi, but Iāve only done that once or twice.
I try to toss them, but they just go everywhere
I put mine outside. The birds pick them up to use for their nests.
Oh no! This is a great thought but the tiny chicks can get tangled in them. Best to card them first!
Thanks for this info. I feel terrible that I've done this so often.
Hey, don't feel bad, you thought you were doing a good thing. When we know better, we can do better.
Exactly! š
Please don't do this, it is dangerous for the birds, they can get caught in the yarn. It can lead to death.
I cut them into shorter segments, collect them, then in summer I use them in paper making (recycling shredded mail into homemade paper). The short threads help add strength to the paper plus make it look cool.
depending on how long they are, maybe consider nƄlbinding if you have the patience to learn another craft
They usually are about 1/2 inches or 4cm in length
I know some people make Christmas ornaments so they can see what colors they used throughout the year.
I stuff things with them, and sometimes I put them between two layers of tulle and sort of quilt it so it makes a heavy, textured fabric
Snacks
I use an old Yankee candle jar š¤·š¼āāļø
use as stitch markers, string plant vines to stakes, mini projects likr braclets
I turn them into stitch markers.
I save them, so I can invisible mend with them afterwards.
Use them as fire starters, forgetting they're made of plastic, and stare at it surprised when it withers and melts lol
One year I bought a pack of those empty bulb ornaments from Michaelās and Iāve made a few ornaments with my ends by filling those bulbs with them. It looks cool! Also, it paired nicely with a blanket I made for Christmas - they got a blanket and an ornament made with the ends and pieces of their new blanket!
I use them as stuffing, or stich markers. :)
I make cat toys out of them lol
Same.
Stuffing, stitch markers. I also knit so if I have long enough scraps they also become stitch holders.
Most are only about 1in or 4cm in length
shove them in a yogurt container
i don't make enough amigurumi, so i have a full bin of yarn scraps lmao
My grandmother used to have this giant vase in her closet filled with fabric squares that she would use to patch holes in other garments. My younger self used to go in there, pull them out, and look at the different types of materials for hours. I sometimes imagine having a giant vase filled with yarn scraps for my grandkids to pull out and play with, but in the end, I use them as stuffing for other projects. haha
My shorter fibers (anything less than at least a few meters long) get put in their own separate baggie for stuffing purposes. But longer lengths of yarn are being stored in various jars (one is an old dog treat jar lol) to eventually be strung together into frankenyarn! I canāt wait.
I really need to sit down and just join and wind what I have saved up already, but it just hasnāt happened yet. I canāt wait to see what insanity might ensue with the colors and texture differences.
Stuffing or i brush then out and just play with the fluff
Stitxh markers with some of them
I wish I had an answer other than save them in gallon sized baggies and glass jars.
I use them as stuffing for small amigurumi projects
Stuffing for other crochet amigurumi
If itās above a certain size they get tied together and added to the super scrap strand for a basket Iām making. Too small and it gets shoved into a glass bottle with a cork top. Itāll probably all be used for stuffing eventually but right now I want to see how long itāll take to fill it!
You can send them to Hedgehog Fibres, they recycle them.
Their lifecycle is pickle jar > amigurumi or cat toy (ball made of extra yarn). Just be careful using yarn stuffing in case of gifting the amigurumi- the multiple yarn types makes washing it in the future more dicey
Absolutely nothing useful, I bin them instantly
I save mine to put them outside for birds to find & use in their nests.
Give them to the birds for comfy nesting material.
My cat gets the bits a plays with them.
I stuff them into amigurumi as filler, as is the custom.
