Playing the waiting game with Navient.
Navient is the one servicer that I’ve seen that has had zero movement for probably 95-99% of their loans. They used to be Sallie Mae which was a government entity. So that could have something to do with it. My theory is that the longer they hold onto the loans, the more interest accrues, then when the loans are discharged and paid in full, they get more money. Though they haven’t demanded payment from me, the interest is certainly still accruing. Just my theory tho.
It's the same strategy that States use for earning extra revenue by piggybacking on various programs such as child support. Estranged parent pays, or has paycheck garnished for, x amount of dollars. Payment amount sits in a unknown interest bearing account for a week or more. Payment is remitted to the parent or guardian.
Student Aid has my Navient loans zeroed out but waiting to see it at Navient still. Mine were FFELP and back by AES so I won’t get refunded. I’m just happy to finally see movement with them! Hopefully everyone else gets them discharged soon.
Who is AES?
Aes is the Latin word for bronze, also used to designate the early forms of Roman Republican currency.

Now defunct, American Education Services. They would partner with, now defunct, ACS to steer naive student loan borrowers towards taking a FFEL consolidation loan instead of a Direct Consolidation Loan.
Conduent Education Services, formerly known as Xerox Education Services LLC, doing business as ACS Education Services LLC (CES)
Thank you
It’s the guarantor for my loans- Ascendium Education Solutions- meaning they aren’t federally funded so I won’t get any refunds. They’ll discharge the amount owed but that’s it.
I just looked and my Navient loans are gone from Student Aid as well! They still show on the Navient site, though.
Aidvantage discharged their loans in September and I received the refund check in October. I haven't been checking much since then. I will get no refund from Navient so I haven't been concerned about that one. But it was nice to see them gone from Student Aid!
Congrats!! Aidvantage had mine discharged and refunded at the end of May, but Navient holds the largest part of the loans so I was watching. Plus, who trusts Navient??? I didn’t think they’d actually follow through.
I don't trust them a bit! I figured they'd go all the way to January to get as much interest as they could. I finally quit paying those "fees" around March, but I guess they'll get them from the DOE.
I had a couple of private loans with them that I had been paying for 9 years. (thankfully the refund was enough to pay them off.) In that time I accrued almost 100% of the loan in interest, and still had over 50% of the loan principle to go. For instance, one original loan was $10,000. Accrued $9,600 in interest. Still had $6,000 left to pay. After almost 10 years of paying them every month. THESE are the people I'd like to go after.
Oh, and the interest went from 6% to 10.5% in the span of one year. 2022-2023
I have private loans with Navient as well. And the interest did hike up quickly! I’m still paying on mine and I can relate to the accrued interest. It basically doubled. And one of loans was hiked to 11.5%!! It’s ridiculous. My refund wasn’t enough to pay it off. I wish it was. I’ll be paying on them for a couple more years.
I really wish there was a way to discharge private predatory loans too. Ai scammed me into taking them out and didn’t explain what they were doing with my student loans. They treated it like I was really lucky to get them so I could finish school. They both (Ai and Navient) knew what they were doing to us. Irritates me to no end!!
Plus, Navient got caught screwing people over with how they handled payments. They never talked to me about IDR or consolidation, they would just put them into forbearance when I called about options. It’s crazy. I got $260 from that lawsuit, but that’s nowhere close to what they cost me with their “help”. I wish that I had been delinquent for 7 months in a row. The loans would’ve been forgiven then. I’m sorry, I’m going on a tangent. I get worked up thinking about it! 🤬
I would like to see a class action for us with private loans as well. I think we should organize and come February 1, start flooding social media looking for others in our situation. Maybe the lawyers who worked the sweet settlement would take it on. Nothing will happen unless we all step up to the plate and make it happen. Make sure you get copies of everything you can. I demanded copies of everything I signed for my loans from Navient. There were surprises. I have taken screenshots of everything. Time consuming, yes. If we can score a win, well worth it. AI loans , worthless degree. Most commercially held feelp. What puzzles me and angers me, all these lawsuits excluded FEELP for refunds claiming they are privately held but even with latest lawsuit involving bankruptcy, they claim they are federal and not eligible. When I finally received my paperwork from Navient, on the top of the loan, in very big letters, it says Federal Student Loan. No where does it differentiate between Federal held or even explain the difference until you read the very small print. I am not a lawyer or even well versed in law but it is my opinion that this is a deceptive practice. My hope is when Sweet has been completely settled, there will be enough interest to go after all these lenders and get our money back.
This happened to me too, ai screwed me. Scumbags, all of them.
Also, congrats to you as well! Glad you got some refund from your Aidvantage loans.
I am still waiting with Navient. Students.gov changed to “processing discharge” but, it still shows a balance that keeps increasing.
Same with mine. Changed to "processing discharge" about a month ago, but haven't heard from Navient or anyone else on reimbursement.
Also with Navient, also waiting...
Download your application from https://studentaid.gov/ and then upload to Navient's website under the Inbox/Upload tab - > Loan Discharge. I just did that last week and now my loans are showing $0 due with no due date.
Is the application mystudentdata? How do I get the right document? thanks
Click on “My Activity” under the user menu. Your borrower defense application should show up on the page the link takes you to.
Click on the borrower defense section of your activity page and it will take you to a page where you can download a pdf copy of the application form.
My loans were discharged on Oct 12th of this year, and they were loans held by Navient. No word on rebate check though.
Who was your lender? Mines is descth bank which is foreign but it's fflep
Deutch Bank is scandalous as hell!
great, just great!
I assume it was Navient directly. It was originally Sallie Mae, and then transferred to Navient. It was while it was with Navient that I filed for the borrowers defense, and my loan payments were frozen (several years now.)
Mines was solidated I thi k that's the hold up but it's still fllep
Navient, no movement at all. Just an ever increasing balance and two loans they refuse to put in forbearance that are perpetually past due.
Comforted to see I’m not the only one.
I think the FFEL/FFELP process takes longer since the loans are not actually federally-funded.
But also, it's likely that because they are not federally funded, Navient and its servicers are dragging their feet to collect more interest from the the government when these loans are ultimately forgiven.
I see but it's still backed by the government so they have to cancel it.
Right, and they have until January 28th, 2024 to do it... So they're dragging their feet.
I actually spoke to an Ombudsman yesterday and I have some loans that are FFEL as well (and also Deutche Bank)- so I can share the answers I was given for my particular case. YMMV
1) The lenders are VERY FAR BEHIND and trying but it just seems they are barely keeping afloat
2) If you were approved in April, (I was approved in February--my case was 2018), this is the official response from the ombudsman:
Your borrower defense claim was included in the Sweet v. Cardona settlement and you should expect to see your loans discharged by Jan. 28, 2024: studentaid.gov/announcements-events/sweet-settlement.
3) My FFEL loans, though backed by the DOE, are considered commercially held loans and they are NOT eligible for refund, but I will not be made to make any payments.
Hopefully this helped a little.
I have the same loans so no refund either and my original case from 2019 was approved. Thanks for the response
Same. Full class. Consolidated with Mohela. Aidvantage and Navient were my servicers previously. I have gotten full relief for my Aidvantage portion but not a word from Navient.
I had Navient. My balance went from negative to 0. I received a refund check shortly after my loans were zeroed out.
I had FFEL loans with Navient. Applied for BD 2017. Approved in October last year. The loans have been discharged and removed from credit report. I defaulted on those loans twice years ago, money taken by tax intercept and wage garnishment. I doubt I'll see a refund of that money but at least the loans are gone..
I'm still waiting on Navient with no movement but the interest. They did remove it from my credit report but I still see it on FSA and on the Navient site. I'm so sick of them.
still waiting here too
