Looking for views and remoteness. Not Black Gap. Would have 4WD and high clearance vehicle.
I agree. There are a couple of washouts which will change depending on the last time it rained.
I’ve done this road in a 2WD Honda CR-V, a 2WD F-150, and an AWD Subaru Outback. All did it without issue
The northernmost section of the road closest to the entrance is an absolute washboard road. If you have loose fillings in your teeth, that section will find them. It smoothed out the further you go.
That northern part is a lot less waterboarded now. You can actually go the speed limit now without disassembling your car lol.
Nice. I always used it as the first way to introduce a newbie to the park.
Five minutes in and they are thinking “what the hell is this?”
15 minutes in their jaws drop at the views and expanse.
Yeah, Old Maverick Road is nice. The best way is to go through the west entrance and head towards the canyon. You get a nice view.
We drove Old Maverick road yesterday in our 2014 Honda CR-V w/ all wheel drive. Totally fine plus HOT and dusty. Search Google Maps for Luna’s Jacal. It’s a unique stop with an old homesteader place right by the road.
Pine canyon used to be fun near the start of it. And it's always been a good remote area, especially 3 and 4.
You'll need at least a vehicle with a bit of clearance if they haven't smoothed out those dips. Pickemup truck should work. We found out the fun way that standard suv won't.
We are planning on renting a 4WD Jeep
Black Gap WMA Fish Camp/River road
Agree with others saying old maverick road.
River road is like a highway immediately after grading but before any precipitation. Don't count on that though.
Yeah the park site stated that it was not being maintained.
It’s long too.
The Maverick Rd is usually the most passable dirt road. It’s graded dirt and passable most times in a 2WD passenger car.
