Planned the trip to go when the moonlight would be lowest - it was in the southern hemisphere until about 6:30 AM. It was also a weekend during the Eta Aquariid meteor shower.
The next best weekend to go might be August 11th, when the core of the galaxy will be visible without the impact of moonlight from 12:00 AM to around 3:00 AM. The Persied Meteor shower will also be in the northern sky at about 20-30 meteors per hour.
However, it'll be damn hot in the middle of August, so take caution.
Beautiful! My trip unfortunately lined up with the full moon and a late moonrise so we couldn’t see many stars. Guess I’ll just have to go back gee darn.
Ha, it was still definitely better than not camping. I’m too far to make it for next weekend but I’m definitely going to try again next time I’m in the area next year.
