I think that movie depicts mals pretty okay. I etched it mine. When she takes the water bottle from Tatum I laughed. It didn’t showcase them as easy dogs although it had a script and it was an ex military dog. Idk I liked the movie and thought it showcased mals not as easy dogs.

I think Dog was kind of weird because it definitely appealed more to a certain niche and was advertised more as sort of a road trip buddy movie with a dog and Channing Tatum. I loved it, but went to see it with a friend and parts of it definitely hit more emotional than we expected.

My favorite thing about dog was my mom having watched it a month or two after I got my Mal and before she had met her, then calling and asking something along the lines of "Is that the kind of dog you got? What is wrong with you?"

Yes, when we first got her mine was very much like that, complete with the destroying the truck scene (her third shelter return and the one that got her short listed for euth was busting out of a kennel while her owner was inside eating and destroying the cab and sleeper of an 18 wheeler).

She's got a pretty good off switch now and will settle and hang out while we watch Netflix or do pretty good on a casual walk, so long as she also gets some time in to go full speed and burn off some energy and work her brain, but the first month or two was intense. I use a tennis ball launcher and a flirt pole a lot, along with scent work and bribing my teenager into taking her on longer runs because he can keep up better than me.

Haha I always reference "Dog" when I'm explaining what a Malinois is to people as that is probably the most popular movie for people to know. They always say "I thought that was a German shepherd".

Nothing wrong with Dog as a fun movie. We enjoyed it. It got a 77% on rotten tomatoes. That's pretty good!

However...

John Wick 3 got an 89%.

Person Of Interest got a 92%.

Fallout got a 93%.

Check those out and see if you like them! Lots of Malinois screen time.

PLS do NOT rely on rotten tomatoes for movie recommendations one thing I came to learn is movie critics are pompous assholes and if u make decisions u won't watch movies u otherwise could have loved happens all the times that's why someone's become cult classics not popular in theaters due to critics and other circumstances but then ppl who actually watch it love it Tarantino movies are a good example "Dog" has one of the most realistic portrayles of malinois owner ship not just them being bad as gaurd dogs like in John wick tho it's an overall better movie this sub is about malinois not movies and combining both with more leaning to the malinois side of things "Dog" is amazing

Yeah there are so many movies and shows it's impossible to watch them all yourself. If I really enjoy one I like to search it up on Reddit and read the comments to get some ideas of other ones to check out.

We did watch it. We enjoyed it. We enjoyed Fallout more. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. There is not enough time in the day with working a job, raising kids, raising Malinois, and enjoying other hobbies to watch every movie and show to judge for yourself. That's why I'm going to continue to use Reddit, IMDb and rotten tomatoes to inform my choices thanks.

I don't know if you're into Sci-fi but Fallout (on Prime) was really good. Especially the cute little Malinois as a puppy scenes (episode 2 I think).

And they always put "badass" music over the video to try to insinuate that it's so cool and difficult to master. I saw a video of a dude in full military (prolly just airsoft) fatigues, and his Mal had a full vest and goggles and ear protection... and all he was doing was just handing gesturing the dog to sit, lay down, and go in between his legs. I thought, "I'm doing that with my Mal right now in my underwear while she has a sock in her mouth."

It’s very useful in crowded spaces. One more layer of separation between her and people with no understanding of boundaries.

I’m sad every time one of these moves comes out. I think the breed is in enough trouble and probably doesn’t need the added attention these movies bring. They only exploit the breed.

I think 101 Dalmatians had a similar [temporary] effect. I’ve never had a Dalmatian but I’ve heard most of them are a nightmare to handle due to inbreeding. Most mals I’ve been around are scary smart and know how to listen/do commands (whether they actually do them is a different story 😅)

Yes I think the high obedience and trainability of Malinois means we will just see more and more of them in TV and movies. That and the fact they are so beautiful and fierce looking.

You're right about 101 Dalmatians. I remember the news reports of shelters being overrun with Dalmatians after that movie. I'm sure a lot of children were pestering their unprepared parents to get them.

I think the effect is still there. In Czechia here we don’t have problems with Dalmatians being bred wrong but people oftentimes get one expecting it to basically be a spotted Disney version of a Golden Retriever, but reality check comes hard.

Agreed, but at this point I think the TikTok and YouTube dog trainer channels are probably doing more damage than the movies.

I swear, all the girls who wanted to be boss babes without the MLMs and have discover that life coaching and photography are oversaturated are now positioning themselves via social media as dog trainers or behaviorists and they all seem to have a Malinois.

I watched a video where a military dog handler was scoring maligators in movies and shows on how realistic they are to what mals usually do in such jobs. Cerberus got 10/10 for accurate portrayal of skills and behavior.

And dogs don’t know it’s not real so the stress they go through is real and can’t work like a real actor. That’s why Cerberus left. The owner does a good explanation with Jack Carr on his dangerclose podcast explaining it.

John Wick 3 prominently features a pair of Belgian Malinois doing active protection work with Halle Berry's character Sofia (my top pick).

Max (2015) had a suspenseful storyline about a family taking in their deceased soldier son's partner.

Max 2: White House Hero (2017) is a cheesy kids movie (though not totally devoid of charm).

R.A.D.A.R.: The Adventures of the Bionic Dog is an over the top cheesy kids movie. Watch the trailer for a good laugh but skip the film unless you have kids that might enjoy a silly adventure. I did find the dog's super powers (super speed, extreme senses, tail rotor flight and gas attack) laughably applicable to the breed.

John Wick chapters 3 and 4 had some mals. In part 3 Halle Berry’s character has a pair of mals that have their own bulletproof vests with hidden holsters. I liked 4 better though, it’s just a guy and his dog. Some of the stunts got repetitive (it’s hard to make a doggy obstacle course that’s camouflaged into whatever the setting is for the scene without making it pretty obvious that it’s just a set built around a doggy obstacle course) but I like the guy and his dog enough to not let it ruin the whole thing.
