He's a lap dog for the Board of Regents, who ultimately made this call.

Who are all appointed by The Governor.
Elections have consequences. The governor appoints countless leadership positions to boards across the state that have an effect on your day-to-day life. The numbers are there to boot out most of our Republican leadership but those numbers require young people under the age of 30 participating.
Young people especially those who are politically engaged at some level just look for excuse after excuse to not vote. When they do find a politician they're engaged with and learn that politician wants to actually govern they get all pissed off because any compromise is "selling out" or some such bullshit. They have lied to themselves that all parties and politicians are the same. They're not, at all.
Every election season on here I see a huge circle jerk about how hard it is to vote. Texas is actually one of the easier states truth be told. Young people are literally in this world being blown up by bombs or shot just to exercise their right to vote but we act like finding an hour every two years during a two week period is next to impossible.
Participating in the system is a lot harder than sitting on the sidelines and complaining.
