Like, obviously they’d still come after me once the Purge ends so I can carry out my original sentence, but would I get added time for escaping even if it’s technically legal?
[The Purge] If I’m in Prison and I escape on Purge Night, would I still be charged with escaping?
The only outstanding rules are no weapons above class 4 and class 10 government officials are off-limits.
So long as you manage to break out without violating either of those rules, you should be fine.
i think you'd be clear on the escaping custody charge, but theyd put a new warrant out to get you to go back to finish your original prison term, and you could face additional charges for evading arrest based off that
Oddly wouldn't inside a prison cell probably be one of the safest places to be on Purge Night
It’d probably be one of the most dangerous. I’d think prison riots occur regularly on Purge Nights. Inmates gotta Purge too!
I imagine it would be pretty straightforward to get everyone in their cells and not allow outside access for any reason during that time.
Unless a prison guard decides it would be fun to open all the cells and then hide and watch what happens. Wouldn't be a crime.
Also, most jails/prisons don't have enough space to securely house all inmates individually so you'd be locked in with at least one person and more likely several. I guess they could cuff/chain everyone to something.
Just because it’s not a crime, doesn’t mean they can’t fire his ass for it the following day.
There's probably a law against retaliation on purge actions.
I mean you can still fire someone for actions during the purge, you'd just have to officially cite some other reason for doing so.
Cite, not site.
I don't think that's a given. The Purge is only about crime being legal, not that you can't lose your job. It's mostly meant to eliminate homeless people and the like, it's not simply about maximizing all chaos.
Is that what it's about? I know there are plenty of people who want to get rid of homeless or otherwise "unwanted" people, but I don't think most them feel the solution is "murder them to blow off steam".
I always assumed it was a way to keep a class-war from erupting. The poorer people can kill other poorer people to think they have some control. Or try to kill the rich people who they think are the problem. But only for one night, if they don't get them, they are safe for a year. And the rich people can go kill anybody who is close to raising awareness of the inequality issue being the real cause of societies problems so that they get to stay at the top with the other aristocrats.
Why would they fire him, if half the prison population dies in one night, that’s less burden on the tax payer the next day.
Isn't one of the main "reasons" (Well what the public are told) of the Purge is it majorly cuts down on crime throughout rest of the year so maybe in that world the prisons aren't as full so they can put each prisoner in their own cell just for the duration of the Purge
Falsified data is the short truth of that. The New Founding Fathers use merc teams to go out and kill poor people to make it look like they are violent lessers, when in reality a lot of rich people are exploiting and killing the poor. They then falsify the data to make it seem like poor prople are the problem, while neglecting that The Purge is actually making people more violent
Why would the guard open the cells? and not just put on a mask, grab a shotgun off the rack and take a walk through the detention areas offing the helpless inmates?
Yeah, I'd imagine that either there's some special rule against that sort of thing or there simply aren't any long-term prisoners in the United States. Any sentence that extends past Purge Day would simply be a death sentence.
I imagine that'd have some strange effects throughout the year. Lots of petty crimes right after purge day since that's the safest time for a short stint in jail, and in the time leading up to purge day there'd be a frantic effort to get plea deals or post bail or whatever other thing you could do to avoid being locked in a cell when that day comes.
A cop could kill a person pre-purge-day simply by coming up with an excuse to lock them up the day before, and there's no way to really defend against that since it's not purge day yet.
Just a further example of the utter barbarity of it all.
Set up cameras and take bets online on which inmate survives.
basically just for fun, as long as you have the area between the guards and the criminals secured they probobly see letting them kill eachother as a lot more fun to watch
prison population are significantly lower in the purge universe. same with homeless, same with poor. because they get killed legally.
Do you really think that type of society gives a shit what inmates do to each other? They probably lock all the doors and evacuate the guards.
The guards are who I'd be afraid of on purge night.
One of the unofficial reasons for the Purge is to eliminate undesirables, cell doors being unlocked by the guards seems likely.
That's assuming the cell doors are locked. Given what else we know about the government in the Purge movies they want the prisoners to kill each other, so the most likely situation is that the guards open all the doors inside the prison and then leave until the morning, and whatever happens happens. Then at 6am a swat team shows up and make an announcement saying to return to your cells, then they go in and put down everyone who doesn't comply (and also kill a bunch of people who do comply anyway)
Why wouldn't the guards simply walk down the row of cells shooting each prisoner as they go? Much simpler and more reliable, and far less damaging to the jail itself.
I guess it's for plausible deniability, the same reason they send secret execution squads into poor neighborhoods during the purge to "thin them out" instead of just poisoning the water supply or something. If everyone in a jail just suddenly dies then their families might start asking question and raising attention which would spell trouble, but if only half of the prisoners die the government can just blame the other half of prisoners and most people will believe them.
That’s not theatrical enough. They probably broadcast live streams of prisons to emphasize “lesser” nature of the inmates. “Look at these animals killing each other” type of thing to remind the populace why they need the purge. Prisons are most likely where they get their best footage as a prison is definitely covered with more surveillance than even the high surveillance world we see in the movies. The government probably broadcasts this footage in the days following the purge with some talking head spouting fear propaganda about prisoners and poor people being violent by nature
One of the main purposes of the purge is to get rid of undesirables in society. So I'm guessing they encourage riots in prison on purge night if not just randomly killing prisoners themselves.
The purge leaves me with lots of questions
If you steal a car, do you have to go get it insured and registered? Do you need to get the deed from the owner?
If you shoot/stab someone but they don't die until the next day are you charged with murder?
What about time zones? Does the purge end on the east coast but is still going on on the west coast?
What if you catch and torture your boss/coworker. Do you just go to work with them the next day like nothing happened?
I don't know If this is mentioned in the movies but are any places off limits? Like hospitals? Orphanages?
What if you get an animal as a pet that is exotic and illegal, can you keep it after?
What if you catch and torture your boss/coworker. Do you just go to work with them the next day like nothing happened?
Yes. It would be illegal for them to retaliate, just like it would be in our world.
All he can do is wait for the next Purge night.
What if you get an animal as a pet that is exotic and illegal, can you keep it after?
Probably "not illegal to keep it on Purge night, but if police find it at your home at any other day it's still illegal".
No, items gained in the purge are rightfully gained. You just file it under "Gained during Purge", fill out some paperwork and ya good.
Depends on how good your lawyer is, really. If they can exploit the "I stabbed him when it was legal" loophole, you'll be fine. If not, nope.
Yeah. Purge ends at 12.
Yep. Thats just how the Purge works. One night of blood, 364 nights of peace... just watch out next year.
Nope. That´d infringe the natural right to purge. Go on, champ. Nuke em.
Purge gains again.
One of mine was “If I’m high on an illegal substance (Ecstasy, Xanax, hell, even Weed depending on what State you’re in) and still under the influence when the Purge ends, am I still in trouble for having it in my system?”
Not if NFFA America still follows common law rules. It's not illegal to be high, it's illegal to possess a drug. Possession requires control. You can't really be said to be possessing chemicals in your bloodstream.
I would say yes, because the time of the dosage is never a factor. It's always about the presence of the substance in the blood stream.
Disagree. Being under the influence isn't the issue, unless you are doing something that requires sobriety (driving, praising medicine, piloting an aircraft) so I'm not sure this could be prosecuted. babies can be born stoned and the baby hasn't committed a crime. Similarly, if there's no law (purge day) when the drugs are taken, then no law is broken if the effects vary over,.
babies can be born stoned and the baby hasn't committed a crime.
Pretty sure if someone puts drugs into your system without your consent you haven't committed a crime regardless of whether you're a baby.
well yes but in our current legal framework its because nomatter the time it was illegal to do drugs, the presence of drugs is not illegal but is proof, barring exceptional circumstances like someone forcibly drugging you, that you have committed the actual crime of possessing and using them
also like, what if i just dont report the crime till a day later and claim it dident happen on the purge? is their some day after purge legal service where you go register who you killed and what you stole to ensure theirs no issues?
Kidnapping a child is much faster than adoption paperwork.
It seems unlikely that you would be charged with escaping.
However, per the second season of the television show, because everything is legal on Purge night, it seems that the New Founding Fathers’ regime has pretty extreme sentencing laws for those who commit crimes outside of the Purge. A subplot in season 2 involves a character being on death row because his foot was not out of the building he was trespassing in the moment the Purge ended.
So yeah, you probably wouldn’t be charged with escaping. But you’re probably already sentenced to die so it’s not like there’s much to pile onto once they catch you. Which they will. The TV show (the second season of which really delves into life in the world of The Purge) establishes that in the Purge-verse, Americans are basically constantly watched while in public through government sanctioned surveillance equipment.
Do they even have prisons anymore? If any amount of prison time that lasts until next year's Purge or longer is effectively a death sentence anyway - which seems very likely imo - why even bother?
Well, they have cops. The Forever Purge begins with two cops coming to arrest a couple of the main characters because they killed a few folks that were still trying to kill them after it was over. So I’m assuming they still have prisons
I'm implying that they probably just execute people for most crimes.
There are probably white collar crimes that still get prison. Indiscriminate killing is for poor people.
The TV show digs into this. Almost any crime is a death sentence if it's not done on Purge night. They hold you for a year and execute you during the next Purge.
Yes. Crimes still happen off Purge night and the NFFA is very strict about catching people still committing crimes after the last horn sounds.
Not getting outside of a bank by the horn is punishable by death on next Purge night.
But you'd still be hunted down and put back in. Right? You'd just not catch additional charges I would assume.
Nope. But if you're going to get arrested and then do this, you're better off moving to one of the countries where escaping isn't illegal and they don't have Purge Night.
Wouldn't COs take purge night to make the rest of their year easier? Probably just enough inmates left alive to mop up all the blood from the night before.
I suppose they COULD, but the D.O.C would probably find a way to fire them after. The more (living) heads in beds, the more money in their pockets. It’s legal, but not in their best interest. At the very least, CO Jenkins probably isn’t gonna be rostered for any more Purge Shifts.
Inmates probably join gangs that 1, are strong enough to protect them from other inmates 2, have enough money to bribe the guards.
Escaping is not a crime in countries like Sweden, Mexico, Belgium. Are you sure it's criminalized in Purge land in the first place?
Well, it’s America, so it’s a safe bet. Unless the New Founding Fathers decriminalized it.
Aren't government buildings exempt from Purge Night rules?
Nope. A prison wouldn’t be housing any Government officials, and any permitted weapons wouldn’t cause much, if any, structural damage to a prison.
But there are no prisons in the Purgeverse because crime has plummeted to less than 1%
Their are.
I just assumed the guards massacred everyone in prison.
I believe you’d have to return before the purge ends and it would be fine.
I'd assume being a prisoner was very dangerous on purge night. Guards probably lock everyone up then go through and wipe most of them out one by one.
I have to assume that since inmates lose their rights in prison, they also don't have a right to participate in the purge.
honestly everyone in the Purge keeps thinking too small and it infuriates me
you could hack a bank and steal a fortune. sell state secrets to a foreign government and get away with it. alter government records to gain ownership of the mansion outside town. destroy evidence in police lockup to escape prosecution during existing court cases.
and all these jerks can think of is "imma hit a dude with a bat"
Because the vast majority of people don’t have access to do things like that. It’s also easy to say you’ll do it but retaliation will happen
