In Serbia, it's usually 2-3,5€ (most usually 2,5-3€ (300-350rsd)) and you have to work 2-3 hours for a meal. For example, KFC pays 3€, one person bucket (5 strips and mini (micro?) fries) costs 5€, Zinger menu is 7€ and similar

Minimum wage in Germany is 12,41€/h. I'm not sure what exactly fast food places pay, but I'm guessing minimum wage or maybe a tiny bit more. A menu at McDonalds is like 10-12€. At KFC a comparable meal to yours with 4 strips, fries and a drink is 10€.

I think it's similar to Serbia here - a part-time worker has to work about 2 hours to be able to afford a meal at fast food. Chain fast foods are pretty expensive here though - often a meal at a normal restaurant is the same price or even cheaper than fastfoods. But local, non-chain fast foods (usually kebab or Asian stuff) is not expensive and you could probably buy a full meal there with less than an hours pay.

I don't know how laws work in the UK, but in Serbia, if you choose to officially work, you lose all benefits (dormitory, health insurance, family pension (if you lost parent s), subsidized food, you have to pay full scholarship, so you have to add about 4000-5000€ annually) and that's about 10 months of full time minimum salary job per year. So there are "student" organisations that have legal loopholes to employ students and pay in the form of subsidies (no benefits or tax) and they pay students between 2 and 3,5€ per hour to work as fast food workers, in stores, shopping centers, charity, advertisement and similar

Nearly the same ratio here but over a half less, Big Mac meal costs ~30 zł (7 €), minimum hourly wage is ~28 zł (6.50 €).

What does „student pay“ mean? I honestly have no idea what that means, I‘m sorry.

In Austria, there exits a minimum wage by collective agreement for (nearly) ever industry, which mostly depend on your working experience and your field-specific education like apprenticeships the field.

If you have no experience or education, it currently comes out to 1970€ per month, after two years, you are upgraded to the next class, which means 2041€ per month.

At a weekly rate of 38,5 hours, that comes out to about 19€/hour.

A big mac menu with fries currently is 8,79€.

Which means you earn about 2,2 Big Mac menus per hour if you work as someone without any experience.

Which, I guess, is what would apply to students.

I wrote about it in this comment, you are not "allowed" to work while you are a student, so if you need more money, you have to work illegally or via student organisations that don't give any benefits other than 2-3,5€/h

So the rate would be 0,33 big Mac meals per hour.

Edit: not 0,33 but 0,34, hourly rate at McDonald's is 360din (3,07€) not 350din(3€) which is at KFC

That doesn‘t sound great, to be honest.

I had the help of my parents while studying, but I guess that‘s a hefty barrier to people who can‘t count on their parents to support them while they study.

If you don’t mind me asking, what‘s the benefit or reason for this regulation?

Theoretically to prevent students from abusing free scholarships (it's about 150€ totally per year, instead of 1000-2500€ if you are not a "budget student"), dormitory (it's 20-25€, all utilities plus internet included), subsidized food (80€ monthly, but it's not most quality)

Practically, politicians take a good part in the cake of hourly salary plus employers enjoy "slave" labour (they employ 3 to 4 regular employees that have salary of 500-650€ neto or about 900 bruto(I'm not sure if it is this amount, we calculate in neto) and rest are students, or other young people who couldn't find job regularly).

Basically, this shitty behavior of the Serbian elite is the reason why 10% of Wiena speak Serbian haha

A similar topic was discussed recently, for Denmark the base pay at McDonalds is around 17,75€ before taxes or roughly 11,30€ after taxes (this amount can vary wildly though). There are also supplements for working late hours, weekends etc.

A BigMac menu at McDonalds is, I think, around 103 DKK or €13,83.

So you'd have to work around one hour to afford a meal at McDonalds.

Base salary for fast food workers is 10.77€/h so you can afford to buy a Big Mac meal and have around 2€ left.

And for night shifts, you make 30-45% more, sundays are double salary and any hours worked over 40h a week are 150% and over 48 is 200%.
