Do you guys think it's inconsiderate to shower at late hours?

You can shower whenever you want.

If they’re already being that aggressive on day 1, I wouldn’t go introduce yourselves. People in this sub have previously gotten assaulted when trying to talk things out with neighbours, it’s not worth the risk imo.

I get off work late and I’m not climbing into bed smelling like a bar, sweaty and gross. Man going to bed not showered after working out or work feels disgusting. Feels greasy and sticky.

Typically in an apartment bathrooms are all next to each other or on top of each other so its unlikely someone's bedroom where they sleep is going to be beneath, on top of , or besides a restroom in an adjacent unit.

If these people were banging, they were already up. Pay them no mind.

Unless they're paying part of your rent, they don't get to dictate the hours you get to use your bathroom facilities.

No you pay to live there you can shower whenever. As long as you ain’t playing your speaker loud in the shower or dropping a whole bunch of stuff I don’t see a problem. Some people work odd hours and still deserve a shower at the end of the day or whenever

I work late into the night and I’m damn sure showering when I get home.

If you stop when they bang for taking a shower in your apartment, they’ll expect you to stop for everything you do in your apartment. Do. Not. Stop. Making. Reasonable. Living. Noises. I promise you. They’ll either become more aggressive and expose themselves or, like mine, get fed up and get used to it.

I shower whenever I want/need to. I can hear my neighbors shower, and I would never get butt hurt over a shower.

It sucks that most people can only afford apartments these days cause so many just have no idea how to live in one. You can shower whenever you want. If you want to go out of your way to be kind, tape some earplugs to their door.

Someone does this to me and I’ve been here for nearly 3 years! Drives me crazy! Like I can’t shower any quieter or can you not tell I’m in the shower?

The shower isn't what set them off, it was probably the noise from moving that didn't end till 3am that got on their nerves. Either way they're assholes and you can shower whenever you want

It’s an apartment. Be respectful, however, having anyone choose your shower time is just not ok. Literally shower anytime, 24/7.

I have medical issues and sometimes wake up in the middle of the night wrecked in pain. What helps is taking my medication and having tea in the hot shower it makes life bearable again lol idc if my downstairs neighbors are annoyed by it, it’s the only thing that makes life livable again my hot showers are literally necessary the hot water hitting my aching joints makes me movable again and I can sleep again lol you can shower whenever you want it’s your apartment/your right to use to shower whenever you need

Shower at 3am, fine, they can shove it. But my association has rules on moving hours, can’t be done past 10pm. You were probably not unpacking as quietly as you thought and they were very tired and fed up. That being said don’t introduce yourself to an angry neighbor, just wait to hear anything if at all from management and just go about your life respectfully like you seem to intend to do!

I haven't seen it noted yet so I'm just going to add - is it possible it was the shower making noise? I've seen posts like this before where it wasn't actually the neighbors at all, it was the pipes making banging/clanging noises and they mistook it for the neighbors reacting. Just a thought since you aren't super familiar with the quirks of the place yet, and figured there was a chance it could be totally innocuous.

It could be air bubbles in the pipes sounding like banging. I lived in an older apartment once, and thr pipes would always tap when I showered. Our neighbour said it happened to them too

It is definitely not the shower. The unpacking might have not been so quiet as you thought. That's a bad way to meet the new neighbours.

Even if you were loud it’s your first day moving in. You’re allowed some grace. Apartment living comes with noise. I stayed in an Airbnb for a month and you could hear other peoples water going on through the pipes but ya know what? That’s life and I survived to tell the tale lol

It would be one thing if you were blasting a shower radio and singing along at the top of your lungs, or having super loud shower sex, but just showering? If that’s what they were seriously banging about, they’re nuts.

You're allowed to live in your own apt. You can shower/use the bathroom, cook, and watch TV anytime you want. You shouldn't blast music or your TV or vaccumm at all hours...there are quiet hours for a reason, but showering cooking, watching TV as long as it's not full blast or through loud speakers is acceptable during quiet hours.

Simply ignore them and live your life, let them be as mad as they want don't let it bother you. If showering is enough to set them off then they're gonna be miserable the rest of their life.

Noise transfer in an apartment can be crazy and disturbing to those around you. My opinion is that you'll want to balance being a good neighbor with fair enjoyment of your own home. Try to meet your neighbors and learn if the noise is a problem. The be kind but fair to yourself.

Hygiene doesn't keep time and neither does your shower. It's on anyone else if they have an issue, not you!

I don’t think using the bathroom is something to get upset over. Vacuuming, at 3 AM now I would. I have a first floor apt and sounded like my neighbor was pounding on the floor at midnight last night, but after reading many posts on this sub, realized the neighbor was probably just regular walking and the sound insulation sucks here. Have started sleeping with ear plugs, though.

My downstairs neighbor takes a shower at 3am and it’s literally never bothered me once, and I can hear when his water or bathroom fan is on. I only know he takes a shower then because he told me when complaining about the water heater not working lmao. You’re allowed to take a shower whenever you want just don’t scream sing during it.

Ignore them. As long as you’re not blasting music or dribbling a basketball on hard wood, you’re fine. Anything that’s part of your normal day can be done at any hour you please. That’s what you’re paying for.

The only reason I would think they were banging was maybe you have water knock (which isn’t your fault). If that’s the case, they need to take it up with the apartment manager. I lived under someone who had water knock and I grew accustomed to it (I was also cool with my upstairs neighbor). But I knew if I wanted something done about it, I’d have to let the management know. It wasn’t his fault and he probably didn’t even know that my pipes were knocking and whistling when he showered. P

All that to say: take showers whenever. Showering at any time isn’t unreasonable.

Personally, if I have to do something in the middle of the night, I try to be as quiet as possible. Living noises are normal, but people also have a right to quiet at 3am. Id just suggest you be extra quiet while showering during sleeping hours

I can remember my first apartment, first morning shower at 5am, because I worked at 5.30am, my neighbour came over when I got home early afternoon and TOLD me not to shower at 5am because she could hear me. So the next morning I got into the shower at 4.45am 🤣🤣🤣 It didn’t matter what I did in MY apartment, she complained 🤦🏼‍♀️ She even complained when I made stuff in my crockpot because she didn’t like that she could smell it. Who doesn’t appreciate someone cooking from scratch?? 🤷🏼‍♀️

no. shower whenever you want. we have an old lady below us who has made complaints about us showering and using the bathroom at night, and told management that we should only be allowed to shower and use the bathroom during daylight hours. management told us to ignore her because that’s obviously unreasonable. just like your neighbors, she has also banged on the ceiling. showering and using the bathroom are normal things that can be done at anytime, don’t let this neighbor tell you what you can and cannot do when it comes to bathroom time.

Definitely not! Shower anytime you want. It would be a bit if a different story if you were going in the shower and dropping every single bottle you own from 5’ up onto the floor. Since I highly doubt you’re doing that, you’re good. 😝

I wouldn’t introduce yourself to those neighbors. Keep to yourself in this instance. Much safer. Whatever you so, do NOT exchange contact information with them. 

If that neighbor continues to bang at your normal and reasonable living noises, let your landlord or property manager know. You don’t have to file a complaint about it unless you want to. You can just present it as an “I just wanted to let you know that x is occurring from x neighbor” just so that they are aware.

I read your update. That's hella cool you have no downstairs neighbors. You guys got lucky with that one. If that wasn't the case though, taking showers wouldn't bother me if it was my upstairs neighbors doing it. It's a necessary noise. Certain noises I don't have issues with. Toilets flushing, the shower, walking around as it's not stomping around. The stuff that would bother me is loud music, doors slamming, stomping around, loud voices, and appliances running during quiet time.

I only had neighbors ask me about late night showers once. They wanted to make sure I was ok since I had taken 4 showers during the night while I was dealing with violent food poisoning. Apparently they could also hear the dying dinosaur noises I was making as my body ejected the toxins through any vector available.

Uhm I’d love for someone to tell me when I can’t do anything in my own damn house. Lol I’d be setting an alarm everyday for 2:30 am and just turn on the shower for an hour and a half.

No. I will shower and walk around my apartment whenever I want. I respect rules and quiet hours, but not all of us work 9-5. If it pisses your neighbors off, fuck em. If they can’t tolerate it, they should move or buy a single family home.

I had a college roommate who got annoyed by us making “loud people noises” when we got ready in the morning. She was pissed about us showering or opening cupboards (in an apartment style dorm) at 7:30-9am.

We all told her “too bad.”

Are you sure you aren't actually hearing the people above you? The gap between the units can really amplify the sound, and make it seem like it is coming from somewhere else.

The people below you could have also accidentally slammed a door, or dropped something against the wall.

Most people that live in apartments are pretty used to the day to day noises. It's unlikely you were actually bothering them.

Sometimes the pipes can be loud in apartments. They probably heard all the noise moving in as well. Introduce yourselves and ask about the noise levels. Nip any issues in the bud

Very nice of you to introduce yourselves and check in to see if you unintentionally disturbed them. I had a downstairs neighbor whose bathroom fan sounded like rocks tumbling in a clothes dryer. It started every morning at least an hour before I needed to get up (6:30 vs. 7:30) and woke me every weekday morning.

I never complained to them or beat on the floor because it was their unit and they weren’t being unreasonable using their bathroom and vent fan.

I did ask the apartment management to replace the neighbor’s vent fan. Apartment management said they checked but didn’t find any need to replace the fan. I never approached the neighbor to ask them to not use the vent fan. Felt like that was too much for me to ask.

Edited to add: I slept with earplugs, but the vibration from their vent fan was a big part of the problem. Even doubling up on pillows couldn’t dampen it.

As long as you’re not singing while showering or using a loud blow dryer you should be fine. I say from experience. I had a neighbour do those things at 2am every night.

That’s why I’ve learned to never live in the ground floor apartment ever again . Ngl it’s so noisy even if they weren’t trying to be. Go ahead and shower when you want to. That’s just the life of being a downstairs neighbor

Definitely shower when you want however....be mindful of the bathroom fan. When ours is on it vibrates our next door neighbours wall something awful. And the noise, wow. So if we need it on its only for a couple minutes. Not on for 4+ hours like our ex-neighbour used to do starting at 3am.

I once had a pipe that sounded like a machine gun going off in my bedroom. It was every morning at 5am when the neighbor showered. I finally threw a big enough fit in front of potential renters that they fixed it...by cutting a hole in the drywall and cutting the top off a giant PVC exhaust pipe that was wedged between two studs. When hot water would go down the drain, the pipe would swell from the steam and snap the wood.

It was awful for us all.

I wouldn’t care if they like it or not. I can understand being nice about keeping the noise down but they have no idea what my schedule is so I will shower when I want.

Glad it turned out to not be an issue. But for the record, showers are not an issue 99% of the time in my opinion. Its usually loud bass music/TV or loud walking/running from kids or barking dogs that pisses people off.

We hear everything from our neighbors, and most of them are shitty people so I don’t care if they’re bothered by a 2 am shower. Especially the lady upstairs that pretended that she didn’t know English when I knocked on her door to tell her that she couldn’t use her water until the plumbers were done in my unit because every time she turned on the water, it caused a flood.

I hear this weird fantom vibrate from upstairs. I swear their phone is on the wood floors and they call themselves at all hours of the day. I have no idea what it is. Will I bang on the cieling? No. I ignore. Maybe it’s something else. Who knows

No it is not inconsiderate. You are allowed to use your bathroom whenever you want. If you are blasting music or singing loudly in your bathroom that’s one thing, but just turning on your shower to take a shower is very normal and it doesn’t matter what time it is.

I work in a bar and often take showers between 3-5am. My neighbors have never said a thing. And I’ve even heard them taking a shower at like 1-2am. I do not care because they are living their lives in their homes. People who think you have to be silent for them are ridiculous.

Live your lives. If they complain directly to you tell them to take it up with the office, you’re allowed to take a shower in your home whenever, you pay for that much at least.

Yes and no. Honestly a shower didn’t bother me too much. I even ignore the fact that I can hear them pee. But I had a neighbor who had some… unique habits. She’d run the tub for hours, draining and refilling on a 4 minute cycle so (I presume) it’d stay scalding hot. We had nonexistent insulation (I could hear conversations at normal volume- sometimes very sensitive ones), very loud, old pipes, and their tub was immediately above my small bedroom. Even with earplugs and a noise machine, it would wake me up. It took me years to get the nerve to ask her to adjust the hours and she did (until that whole eviction thing).

I shower late at night most days but summer in Dallas is here and I’m definitely giving my self a nice once over before bed now.

No. It’s only inconsiderate to assemble furniture, rearrange furniture, play music, or stomp at night. You gotta shower and you gotta pee and poop sometimes. Natural human things.

You can definitely shower whenever you want, maybe ask your neighbors to let you know if you’ve made any noise so you can watch out for it and see what they say. You can also offer to share phone numbers so you can call each other if your ever loud in the future.

If it’s banging from the plumbing you might want to let the landlord know that they’ve got water hammer in the pipes and ask about adding some stability clamps or insulation to keep it from banging so much. If there’s anyone living in an apartment next to that room I’m betting they can hear it.

I once lived in an apartment, and I could not hear any of my neighbors. I asked my landlord and he said it is because if how the apartments were constructed...Apartments are made cheaply..

My son was just crawling on the floor, and my neighbors thought we were keeping up too much noise.
