They like British things now.
The theme of every episode.
I hope not, but i expect this will fail miserably.
Grew up in uk but lived in usa for last 20yrs - american's don't have the broad sense of satire, political irreverence and wordplay that HIGNFY relies upon. It's not that they lack a sense of humor, it's just topical satire relies on shared context which doesn't work for an audience of 50 loosely connected countries full of very different people who are more polarized than ever.
The closest you get to political satire here is bill maher, colbert or john oliver who are partisan sledgehammers playing to the audience. Very different to the surgical attack of both sides you get on HIGNFY. I'm not even sure what qualifies as pro-right satire here - they probably just pin pictures of biden up at the shooting range.
Shows like VEEP are the closest we've had, and even that was a sesame street version of the thick of it.
Veep was to The Thick of It what The American Office was to The Office
I disagree. Armando Iannucci was the showrunner for Veep for the first few seasons and while it had the spirit of the UK version, it stood on its own as an independent IP, on the other hand Gervais and Merchant sold the format and gave the buyers carte blanche to mould it their own way. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you'll be on thin ice comparing a regionalised copy of a format to a complete reworking of a format to fit a particular region.
I dunno, I enjoyed Veep for what it was and I agree it was its own thing, but I've watched The Thick of It all the way through about 5 times, but never once had the urge to rewatch Veep.
The fact it'll be on CNN means it'll be partisan bullshit and about as bitingly satirical as Colbert
Yeah .. the BBC version is so well-balanced
Partridge would have been a good panelist on this.
Guest presenter you mean...
HIGNFY is a gem of British telly but it relies on the ‘panel game’ format which doesn’t really translate to American things
I’ve been here 4 years and I always get rolled into a conversation about 9 out of ten cats and taskmaster. The Americans are definitely getting exposed to panel coms.
I’m hoping for good things but it’ll have to adapt to the audience or it’ll fall flat. Plus it took years for hignfy to become consistently good. So I’ll definitely give it a chance.
Things are said on this programme that i wish would reach a wider audience. Seriously, iconoclasm is their stock in trade but with extra funny. I celebrate this excellent news.
The appeal is largely down to Hislop and Merton and their VERY different approach to jokes. I went to numerous recordings of HIGNFY when an ex worked on the show - and Hislop works his arse off and hits most of the time, Merton is a lot more laid back and is funny ALL the time.
Can't see this going over too well in the US.
That ex has also work loads on Whose Line (same production company) I wonder if she will be doing this. I still miss her.
Get over her bro
Out of the panel shows my dad religiously watches HIGNFY is the one I can’t stand the theme just depresses me
It stopped being entertaining when Angus was sacked all those years ago. Outdated BS

Donald, you've lost the news!
