What’s something socially acceptable that you secretly find really annoying?

Being told to respect your elders or those of authority. I believe respect needs to be earned, and just because someone is an authority figure or older than you does not mean they are always right or deserve respect.
I prefer respect by default. And disrespect if disrespected.
The issue is that “Respect” has two social definitions.
To treat someone with basic dignity. To be cordial, polite, and kind.
To treat someone with deference as an authority figure.
Definition 1 should be given by default, IMO, and retracted when necessary. Definition 2 is what I think dooingthedew18 is talking about and, IMO, needs to be earned.
Fair. Although, I think there is a difference between being cordial/nice/polite and truly respecting someone. Most of my elders and authority figures in my life I don't know all too well, so it is difficult to respect someone you don't know.
