How do y'all feel about paying for someone else's child to attend private school? How about we fix the public schools?
Why do y'all carry so much water for our public school system? We spend around the national average per pupil and we're still consistently ranked in the bottom 3.
Kudos for any parent trying to better their child's education and taking them out of our public schools. It's even better that they can now use their own tax dollars to do it instead of having to pay taxes for public school plus the private schools cost. Makes it more accessible to lower income families.
Why do you carry so much water for private schools? If your stat is correct, shouldn't we be more focused on improving our public schools so every child can get a fair shake and not just the ones with the wealthier parents? Plus not everyone wants their kid to go to a religious private school, which is pretty much the only choice anywhere around here.
How do we improve public schools? We already spend more per student than most states. Why should some parents be forced to send their kids to a school where many parents don't care about their own kids' education.
Plus not everyone wants their kid to go to a religious private school, which is pretty much the only choice anywhere
You don't have to send your kids there but if you want a top notch education, hard to beat ESA. But again, you are not forced to do so. Keep sending your kids to a public school. It's up to you.
We are #30 in the country for spending per student. The states we “spend more” than are the larger shit shows in education, aka red southern states with their “but teachers indoctrinate our kids” logic. I’m sorry we teachers say read! Think for yourself! Have ideas! Listen to others and make your own decisions! Cuz if I could indoctrinate kids, I’d make them turn in their work and get off their phones.
Are we ranked 30th in education? Nope, not even close. We spend about $1,600 less than California. If we were to match California, what would you spend that money on? Better teachers?
Now would you like to compare the top 10 rankings in K-12 education and compare that to the top 10 K-12 spenders? I think you will find that spending does not always correlate to outcome. So what else is happening?
Louisiana ranks 40th in K-12 which by the way is better than Oregan, Deleware, Maine, Nevada, New Mexico and West Virginia. Some of those blue states spend more than Louisiana.
Moeny does not equal results. There are a lot of other factors involved that dumping money will not address.
True. Poverty is a major indicator of academic failing or success, and we are poor as it gets. We don’t have opportunities beyond gas and oil, we claim far more public aid use, we give massive tax subsidies to corporations yet do nothing to make them pay fair wages. Only those who cannot afford to move have stayed. We need to solve the issue of state poverty in order to improve education. Those states you mentioned? They don’t have the crippling poverty we do.
Excellent post. I would argue the corporate tax subsidies. Every state does it. Every single one.
That huge solar panel manufacturing plant in New Iberia would not be here if there was no tax incentives and grants.
Safesource would not be here.
Stuller Settings would have moved decades ago.
Amazon warehouse.
The list goes on and on but it's the only way to convince many large employers to move here. Yes, there is a loss of property tax for a number of years but property tax on vacant land is near zero.
