I’ve had ARFID for years, and something I always struggle with and feel guilty about is feeling disgusted/losing my appetite when someone I know is eating a food I don’t like. For example, I don’t like pasta, the smell makes me nauseous- it’s mostly the sauce. And when my friends or family eat it, I feel so grossed out and overwhelmed and don’t wanna eat anymore. Especially when it’s multiple foods at the table, it’s so overwhelming for me. It sounds stupid and rude but I genuinely can’t help it. Please tell me I’m not the only one
Anyone else struggle eating/being around foods that you don’t like?
Does Anyone Else?no this makes a lot of sense! sometimes my family members will be eating food that has a smell that i really can't stand, and because smell and taste are so closely intertwined, it makes whatever i'm eating taste nasty and i lose my appetite. this happens less frequently and to a lesser extent, but i also sometimes can't eat when someone i'm with is eating something that looks gross to me, or makes a bad sound when they eat it. these are just a few of many reasons why i tend to prefer to just eat by myself, lol. rest assured that you're not alone in this :)
The smells of cooked broccoli and cabbage make me gag. I either leave the house or suffer through it until my sense of smell is overwhelmed.
Someone just making eggs in the same house as me makes me nauseous so I totally understand
Yeah I have a few I am absolutely terrified of such as baked beans, I can't even look at them or let them go near me. Bananas are another and a few other fruits/vegetables
Beans are absolutely vile
A little. There are many smells I dislike, but I have more issues with actually seeing the foods. When my kids were younger and loved eating offensive (to me) foods, I had to put something between us that blocked my view, otherwise my gag reflex/need to throw up would immediately be turned on.
The smell of any fruit. It gets to the extent that I've started putting cereal boxes around my place setting to block the smell
This is me with anything visibly greasy. Everyone else is like this pizza looks sooooo good! Meanwhile all I can see is the pooling grease and I'm just sitting there like 🤢
There's also this garlic chicken my mom gets from the Walmart deli that I refuse to be in the same room as her whenever she has it because it smells so bad.
There is a small list of foods my husband can’t have if I’m eating with him because I get so nauseous (soup is a big one). My therapist and I have come up with some coping techniques if I’m out to dinner and struggling with another table’s order. They sort of work - it’s a lot of distraction techniques.
i'm mostly fine, but i cant be around mushrooms 😭
I did for ages until i started getting used to it it was like exposure therapy (still struggle if I can smell certain foods that I despise)
Oh totally. I cannot work anywhere In food service because of it. My mom and sister used to think this was stupid but they’ve come around now. Even as a hostess or waiter…I just couldn’t handle the smells, especially all mixed together. Even if it’s a food I don’t hate, or a smell I don’t hate, any smell at the wrong time can send me over the edge. I don’t even let my partner pan sear garlic, or prepare sea food at home. It’s so offensive to my nose, it’s just not an option, I’ll vom. And I’m an emetophobia girly too.
I struggle with it. Makes the prospect of dating horrifying.
