Just curious if anyone else ponders this question.
For me, the number I'd like to hit is 24 movies per year, which means that I'm paying less per month than the cost of seeing 2x movies a month.

It could be even less. In my locale (Los Angeles), an IMAX or Dolby ticket is around $25. So going to one of those virtually makes up for the month. So the number might be 1.5 movies/mo. or even fewer.
The reason I signed up for A-List in the first place is that a month was actually a few cents cheaper than the single Dolby movie I was planning to see.
Yep. Was literally $2 cheaper than the Oppenheimer 70mm IMAX showing I wanted to see.
You gunna walk out halfway bro?
1.5 a month is 18 movies a year.
What you just suggested was 24 movies. Smh
That makes no sense. There are only 7 days in a week. If you go every other day that is 3.5 times a week.
Same amount as I use my gym membership š
1 a month where I am
One a month for me. NYC.
Two a month in my city at a regular screen. Although, a single IMAX ticket is the same as the subscription, so Iād just break even there. I usually see at least 3 or 4 a month so far, but this is my first year on the A list.
2/month is definitely the breakeven point but honestly I find itās worth it even though I usually only go to about 20/year. Itās nice to not have to feel like youāre paying for a movie ticket, especially if youāre also spending money on food. And the faster reward points are definitely worth it for concessions IMO.
Thatās the great thing about A-list. Itās designed and priced in a way to wear casual moviegoers and frequent moviegoers. Can both greatly benefit from it. For someone that would just go see one movie a month, theyāre actually saving money on their ticket. For two a month, theyāre basically doing a buy one get one free with an added discount. For people like myself who try and use all three reservations per week, weāre practically paying peanuts for each movie.
With the frequent moviegoers, AMC definitely depends on concession purchases and the hope that they will purchase concessions for at least half the movies they attend
Itās hard to say because movies are not all priced the same. For instance, seeing 4 Tuesday movies a month is like $20 with the Stubs rewards - not even break even. Seeing a weekend matinee is like 25% off, usually around $12-13 in my area - seeing 2x month would break even. But 1 evening Dolby or IMAX will have you breaking even after about 1 movie. It really just depends on your moviegoing habits
Thatās a good assessment.
Based on my usual movie going, 2 movies, usually go to most IMAX releases, more than pay for it. That said if I didnāt have A-List Iād go on Tuesdays which more accurate put it around 4. In addition Iād be going to a different chain, with $6 Tuesdays, newer/better screens, with the exception of my AMC IMAX and recliner, which my AMC doesnāt have. So for me Iām happy of if I can average 4-6 a month.
Exactly! A-List changed my habits. I probably wouldn't see some stuff on premium screens without it, so that $20+ ticket was not something I'd get anyway.
Same! So when I see people post their āsavingsā Iām like did you really save that money or would you have seen that movie on a regular screen on a Tuesday if you didnāt have A List? (Or god forbid wait for streamingā¦) I choose to see what makes A List āworth itā not by how much I āsavedā but by the fact that I see a wider range of movies guilt free since I never leave the theater upset that I paid $5-15 for a movie that I didnāt love. Itās a different lifestyle/mindset when it comes to going to the movies.
We love the 25% off weekend special. Lunch, movie, then dinner lol itās perfect.
Tuesday movies are $7.50 now for most theaters.
Year to date...I've seen 58 movies. Well worth it.
Just saw my 78th movie of 2024 tonight. Only three or so repeat screenings for the year. A-list has been a fantastic way to experience movies I never would have considered in the past, due to the cost of single tickets.
I wish I had a local AMC that had 3 new movies a week. My local is a 6 screen. So I get an average of 1.5 new movies per week showing up.
I benefit from living near the AMC headquarters so there are 137 AMC screens within 35 miles. We get the extremely limited releases usually only reserved for major cities like New York, LA, and Chicago.
I wouldn't be able to see as much as I do without access to the enormous selection.
Lucky
6 screens is diabolical Iām so sorry.
Outstanding movie going there. You are the Ape-Lister Silverback I didn't add the movies and screenings I had to pay for separately. I took 13 different friends to see the Taylor Swift Concert movie 13 times...and the Beyonce concert twice...and the Queen concert twice. Sucks A-listers have to pay for that.
I saw the Queen concert on IMAX with my A-List.
Yep. Same! And ABBA. And David Bowie. I think there were a few more and many more I missed
Oh yeah, I saw Bowie and also Soundgarden and Talking Heads. Missed the ABBA one, and more than a few others.
I did too, one of my best theater experiences this year. Was blown away by the video and audio quality of a 40 year old concert. Moonage Daydream has to be the loudest movie Iāve watched. My watch showed 106 DB and I know it was louder at a few other parts.
you have a crazy amount of free time. I was happy with 36 for all of 2023
Haha, my girlfriend and I both have grown kids and work remote. We do it to get out of the house and seem some crazy different flicks. We almost never watch movies at home but if it's in the theater, we're game to check it out.
Man, I thought I was doing good. I just finished my 36th movie tonight. A-List is definitely paying for itself at this point for me
I just counted I think Iām at 51..there are a few repeats. 1 I left and 2 I slept through š I like it. I live alone and am off a weird day during the week. Something to do
It's my church. I enjoy the peace.
What was the one you left
Wow! How many repeat viewings vs. first time viewings?
Not many...I see 3 movies a week. Sunday is my movie day.
58 Holy moly, weāre at 6 and weāll likely end up at 14 if we donāt miss a single one we want to see (and we usually miss several).
Its actually 78 with the Taylor Swift/Beyonce/Queen concerts...but those were paid for.
Wowzers, Iām only at 33. Jealous!
I watch about 10 movies a month so it pays for itself each month
So Iām bored at the airport and was curious and put some though into it.
Kinda went over board but here is my thought process. In Illinois, the average ticket price with $5 Tuesdays is about $13.45 (I got that by using all formats including the matinees and $5 Tuesdays) without $5 Tuesday itās $14.86.
The highest tier of AList cost $24.95
So basically if youāre going to movies and seeing movies in all formats you would need to see 2 movies a month to justify it.
Anybody who is in this sub probably is justified paying whatever it cost wherever theyāre at. Itās honestly a steal and Iām glad they created this program and it actually being sustainable.
The only way itās not worth it is if youāre in the $5 movie gang
Dolby ticket in NYC is $29.49
IMAX ticket in NYC is $26.49
Laser ticket in NYC is $19.99 - $21.49
Digital ticket in NYC $18.99
IMAX 3D ticket in NYC $28.49
3D ticket in NYC $25.49
(not including fees)
Having A-List here is a must.
Does anyone know why Laser fluctuates in price?
Does anyone know why Laser fluctuates in price?
Showtime/movie probably
does this really count as an opinion type question? for it to be worth it you would need to at the very least save at least $1. if it's $25 a month, that's $300 a year. once you figure out when you would hit $301 worth of tickets if you bought all of your personal tickets individually it's already worth it.
This is usually my 15-17th movie where I break even. This year I hit that by April which is pretty cool
I just did the math and at 300 per year Iām at 60 right now, so that is $5 per movie. If I use my 3 every other week for the rest of the year, I drop down to $3. Hard to beat.
I pay by the month, not the year. It's basically $25 a month to essentially see as many movies as I have free time to see most weeks. (I work full time, often OT, have social obligations, so rare are the weeks I'd be able to squeeze in more than 3.)
I avg 2/week, so that's $3.125 per movie, less than a gallon of gas.
Totally worth it.
1-2 per month.
14 a year and I feel like it's paid for itself, which is all I ask. I usually see around 30.
If I'm being extra cheap, 4 a month. A-List is about $21 with tax for me, while I can go on Tuesdays and get three non-premium tickets for $19.50. In general, though, I'd say 2 a month. I like the flexibility of being able to go any day of the week, as well as getting premium formats (which are about $18 per ticket at my local AMC and I usually see one a week, sometimes two).
I've used all three tickets every week this year except for one (used two that week, but I also saw a Fathom Events film; there was nothing else that was new for me), so I'm getting well above my money's worth, anyway.
If you're looking at money standpoint. At least 24 (2 per month) in a year. But with A-List, you're also watching movies you normally won't watch in theater. I would say at least 36.
The first 24 movies I would have seen this year would have cost me $453. I usually break even around the 16th movie for the year
$32 a ticket?
No, average was about $19 a ticket with the most expensive ticket being a Dune 2 70mm Imax ticket at $28 and the cheapest being Pearl at $8
Not sure how you got $32 that would be $768 for 24 movies
Iām in nyc. One a month pays for it.Ā
IMAX and Dolby are $26.50 a ticket in NYC, A-List is basically a necessity if you go to the movies here
As long as we see 3 a month. We saw 8 in June so thatās a win!
I go far more than my fiancƩe, but her goal is at least 2 a month to break even on the pass!
I always go Dolby/imax and a single ticket (non matinee) is 26.95 which is actually more than my A-List (24.95). So even 12 is minimum but on average i go 20-25 times each year
Depends on the state and your local AMC. This is something I actually track in a spreadsheet.
At my states AMC A List price at $20 a month and the average price of ~$15 a ticket, 16 movies a year is the break even point. I see way more than 16 a year but if I ever dipped below 16 then I would not consider it worth it.
I feel like I am leaving money on the table if I donāt see 3 a week
If you see movies in Dolby? 12
1-2 a month.
For me, watching a couple of dolby cinema already makes it worth it.
Iāve already seen 23 movies this year. I think as long as I get to see all the movies I want itās worth it
I've seen at least 2 a week since I've gotten my membership. (I'm s newbie so about 5 months) and many weeks I'll go to 3 depending on what movies are available.
25- two per month plus one extra to do more than break even.
just use math
People don't like to think for themselves any more.
This
2 tickets a month is the break even point.
Atleast 25. Typically if I was not signed up with Alist. I would go for 12 movies/yr. Since I'm paying subscription atleast 25.
Two movies a month minimum for it to be worth it.
Usually I try to see a lot, depending on whatever. June I really only saw 1 or 2, but like July Iām trying to go every weekend bc of the amount of films I wanna see
24
Depending on where you live, just two movies a month makes it worth it.
So I recently just bought A-List. For the past 3 years I have gone to the theater around 50-80 times depending on how many movies are released that year. Most weeks I see around 3-5 movies and sometimes I see 3 movies in a single day plus at least one other earlier in the week. 80 movies a year always paying 10-15$ each timeā¦. But now with A-list I pay 20$ for the whole month and get 3 free movies a weekā¦.thatās at least 40-50$ a weekā¦. 160-200 a month. All that is now just 20$ a month. Buy it. It easily pays for itself.
Here in Texas it's $19.95 + local sales tax
2 movies a month (or 3 if you only go on Discount Tuesdays) is enough to justify A-List, so ideally šš-šš movies a year, depending on your movie going habits
This isn't factoring Dolby Cinema, IMAX and Prime ofc
1 to 2 a month. Thatās my roundabout magic number.
2/month
Currently at 26
At least 2 a month
3 or so a month. Iāve probably seen well over 60 there this year.
One PLF every 6 weeks.
2-3 a month, depending on if any of them are matinee.
6 per month at least.
Me and my friend group hit at least 2 a month some months we go every week
Once a month, an IMAX ticket at Lincoln Square NYC is damn near $40
Over here in NYC movie ticket are $18-26ā¦ so if you go to the movies 12 times a year it worth it
Idk how much a year, but I usually see at least 1-2 per week, which at least makes it worthwhile for me.
Personally Iāve up to 80, thatās only because I was getting into the amc crave and was doing movie reviews for people who, wanted to see if a movie was worth it
24 movies a year I would agree with, I'm already at 59 movies for 2024.
Well, personally, I pay $19.95/mth so x 12 mths = $239.40.
$239.40 / $18.49 (cost of a full-price IMAX ticket at my theatre) = 12.95. If I see 13 IMAX films in a year, I fully pay off my membership dues.
Fortunately, between all the movies I've seen thus far (IMAX and not) in 2024 ... I have already paid it off. And I swear that Dune Part Two helped pay off about four months. š
Whatever the price * 12 months is. I see if the movies I would have watched anyway (in the format I would want) + 1 or 2 gimmies add up to that. If it doesn't, I am losing money. People who watch more movies than they would normally because of A-list are losing money unless there are a lot of gimme movies in there.
14 a year
2
In NYC anything over 12 premium format movies is worth it.
I wish you could pause your membership. Iāve literally been grasping for straws this summer. Whenever I want to see more of indie artisan movie I have to drive across town and go to the mall to see it. Iām pretty sure that they havenāt updated that theater since the early 90ās when they built that mall.
one IMAX already covers the monthly cost
Personally, at least 3 movies a month. The ticket prices in NYC are absurd and I have to constantly remind my co-workers to not judge my spending habits as I have a subscription and I am indeed not a big baller going to the movie theater every week. 4 times a month is more than $100 in just tickets ...
I make sure to do two IMAX showings a month
Tickets are regularly like 20-25 bucks in the Denver area so probably about one a month for me.
20-24 roughly
i saw 36 last year, I average 2 a month most the year but more in the summer.
1-2 a month. Average ticket where I am is ~20
Where Iām at it would be three movies a month. ticket prices in my area are cheaper than they are in the major city, but every theater in the state is in the higher price A-list plan
A list is great at just - or to movie a month, plus if you get food and stuff the money back is even better
Iāve seen 19 movies in 3 months so itās worth it for me.
2 movies a month and it pays for itself
24
For me, 4 a month at the bare minimum.
13-14 movies a year minimum as my A-List is $24.95, and Dolby/IMAX here is $20.49 to $25.49 depending on the time.
Personally though since 2021 Iāve made it a mission to see as many movies as possible and break my record each year. Try to see less repeats too, Iāll also see movies on Tuesdays and use Fandango rewards so see extra movies if itās a packed week of 5-6 releases.
I see all the movies so I can to get the best deal.
I'm seeing 3/week.
I've had it since Sunday and have seen 5 movies already. Granted the weather hasn't been the greatest and have had the time off.
I'd say if you see two movies a month it pays for itself. Especially if you do IMAX or Dolby.
3-4 a month. I got A list but I'm afraid the employees will remember my face if I watched 3 movies every weekš
Iād say 25 especially if half or more are in premium formats.
I'd say 24, but in actuality maybe 12 because I love movies in IMAAX and they're 25 each
2 more than pays for it
One movie and $15 in Fandango credit used to be enough per month. Since the credit is gone now, at least 4 because of discount Tuesday pricing.
About 20-25 a year.
We only see about a dozen a year so itās never worth it.
Last year:
Barbie, Mario, Guardians 3, Spidey Across Universe, Wonka, Elemental, Ant-Man, Taylor Swift, Trolls, The Marvels, Teenage Turtles Mayhem, and Haunted Mansion.
There are 4 more we would have seen if we had more time (Little Mermaid, Migration, Indy, and Hunger Games). But I donāt count those because every year we miss a few.
We only watch the Marvel movies in IMAX, and thereās only one coming out this year. Everything else is usually matinĆ©e standard screen.
I just donāt know what other movies to watch that would even bring us close to the 20-25 number. Weāre not interested in anything else lol. So Premium it is!
16/17 a year depending on format. I saw over 30 last year probably the same this year.
3/month is my line. If I get to the point where I'm consistently seeing less than 3 per month for a few months then I'd cancel. But so far I'm averaging about 5.
Technically I could only see 2 and it'd still be worth it on paper, but A-List gets me in there seeing movies I would never pay full ticket price for anyway, so I can't really say I "saved money" by using A-List to go see something like Daddio...there was no chance I'd drop $15 on that without A-List.
In my area an evening Dolby adult showing now exceeds the price of the monthly membership so one would already put me at a savings
2-3 a month and itās paid for itself and then some.
Usually break even after two movies.
i typically see at least 1 a week but 2 a month is what 100% makes it worth it. tbh for me even 1 a month is ok if itās IMAX etc because in my area thatās more than the cost of A-List
2 regular movies a month
Or 1 IMAX or Dolby movie a month.
It pays it off for the month.
I have a friend who refuses to get a list. Idk why. When she sees a movie with me, she pays $18.50 for one movie.
2 a month regular format only.
40-50
As long as you get over 300 bucks a year. Which is pretty easy in a major metro.
About 2 a month so I guess 24 a year
I donāt mind waiting a couple days and going during a matinee showing. Thatās about $7-8. So 3 movies for me a month would make it worth it. Last month was wasted though since I didnāt bother seeing any movies, nothing interested me. (Glad I got in on the .99 deal) Rest of the year looks great though!
Three per month! If you go on Groupon you can get $10 to the movies. So with three per month you are good
Ok we all agree that itās a great deal. But follow up questionā¦ How much do you spend on concessions per year/month?
The great thing about a list is that you can literally just go to the movies once a week and youāre getting a great deal on the whole thing.
I use all of my reservations each week. On average, I go to my local AMC three times a week. Itās getting to a point where they donāt check my ID anymore when they scan my ticket because they know I am.
I will watch just about anything. There are specific things that just donāt interest me, but I love taking gambles on those smaller movies that play for like a week or two.
I only do A List for May-August, cuz that is when I will see 10-15 movies. Totally worth it.
Do they ever get mad that you have cancelled/restarted? The window of time you have to wait to re-sub is 6 months right?
Get mad? Not that I know of.
My local AMC sucks, so my answer is double the next highest answer in this thread.
I always say it, but Hindi movies and foreign films, in general, are my category of choice when using A-list. I wish AMC allowed A/list more on some of these releases, especially anime. Seems theyāre cracking down on access. Even a dated movie like Close Encounters is excluded for me! š
And no Iām not paying $20 to watch Kalki 2898 A.D. on a small screen. Going to a different theater to pay $5 to watch at a different chain (which has MUCH NICER bathrooms, setup, layout, etc ā¦ hope youāre seeing this AMC!
2 a month
