I'll start: Summer Shudder should've been the main single from Decemberunderground instead of Miss Murder.
Agreed. Not a huge fan of any of their merch post-crash love
I really miss Alan Forbes doing their art. Not to mention he's a really nice dude.
hard agree. the only merch of theirs i actually would feel cool wearing is throwback stuff
I bought a "death of the party" shirt for the fact that every time I get involved in conversations that people seem to be having fun in they just stop talking and it feels like I killed the party.
Otherwise I'm not a fan of this new stuff. Blood and Missing Man and Burials were OK and I liked CL a lot but STS down was coolest.
Given the number of upvotes, this seems to actually be a popular opinion.
Okay, how do I say this delicately, lyrically when Davey is good he’s fucking amazing, right? But sometimes Davey’s writing is…um…bad. I’m thinking Pop Kids, some Dream Car lyrics, even lately some AFI songs. He’s only human but when it’s bad it’s so awkwardly bad. It’s the oddest thing.
I think Davey’s biggest pitfall as an artist is that he knows he’s attractive but not how to capitalize on that lol
To me, his STS/DU era was best and punk look & CL/Burials were all fine enough to capitalize on it. Now his look is awful. I mean STS had him doing things like posing with Jeffree Star for things like jewelry and a clothing brand and shoes. So I think he did it best during that time.
The writing on Bodies is atrocious. I can't believe the same person that wrote pick any song from STS wrote "wait.....for me....in the night......as you struggle" to the tune of theme song from The Office. Looking Tragic should have been the opening track because the first line, "wait a minute this may be boring" is 100% accurate.
Sorry for the rant, I was just really disappointed with Bodies.
Looking Tragic should have been the opening track because the first line, "wait a minute this may be boring" is 100% accurate.
I still don't understand why that line is there, is it supposed to be ironic or does he know it's true? Looking Tragic is my least favorite single off of Bodies
I was honestly pretty disappointed with bodies too! There's a couple tracks that grew on me but I've never put on an AFI album and just felt "blah" about it
I really feel that looking tragic is the worst song they’ve ever released. It feels like a soulless green day b-side imo
Bodies was a bad album as far as I'm concerned. I think the one song "escape from la?" Was ok. It wasn't good enough for me to verify the name before typing this though.
Escape from LA is ok of you can get past the vocals.
Bodies is definitely one of my least favorite. It has a few ok songs and while I do like Looking Tragic it's an odd song. Overall the whole album was weird. It still has not grown on me. I honestly really hate Tied to a Tree & Caught.
“If you’re there, god, strike me down. You won’t.”
I love that song! Lol
I do too actually haha. I just also think that lyric is silly
It's probably why I like it so much. He's all serious then just kinda like "nah you won't do that"
I hate that song with a passion. It sounds like an "I'm 14 and this is deep" version of Head Like a Hole.
Dreamcar is just pure 80's-esque cheese and I love it. My husband and I would've loved to have seen them live.
Pop Kids & Love Fast Los Angeles are pretty... oof. I bought them because it's Davey, but they feel like fanfiction of The Perks of Being a Wallflower done badly.
Some lyrics have gotten pretty bad. I'm not a fan of certain songs like Tied to a Tree or Caught. Just too... meh for me. Bodies is definitely one of my least favorite albums.
I really like the production on Burials. Everything sounds so loud and blown out, I think it fits the theme of the record.
I think that was the last AFI to sound big. Jade just isn't cutting it production wise imo.
My biggest gripe with Jade taking over as producer is the lack of interesting song composition. They all follow the same predictable pattern, there's not a whole lot of variation. I know a lot of songs follow the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus/end convention but every AFI record from 1999-2013 had fleshed out songs that deviated from the cookie cutter approach.
Now it sounds like all songs are written by one person and the others are just contributing parts. I get that they all have lives and are basically working remotely but it would be nice if they still physically wrote together.
Also this is just my theory about the last two albums, I might be wrong.
Now it sounds like all songs are written by one person and the others are just contributing parts.
I definitely feel this on Bodies to a strong degree. It really feels like the band never even jammed the songs live together before recording it - they may have just gotten the demos from Jade and then sent in their parts. The whole record is just lifeless and flat to me.
They all follow the same predictable pattern, there's not a whole lot of variation
I feel like everything from Burials and on, Blaqk Audio's last few releases, and Dreamcar all sound like the same band.
I get it, two of the members are the main song writers for two of the bands, but the entire purpose of two bands was to offer something different from the main project. It's all just been so jumbled together, and every album sounds like an extension of the previous one, and AFI was always known for changing things up with each release, but it just sounds like you said, same predictable patterns and no variation
Honestly this last AFI album and the last 2 Blaqk Audio albums have just been meh. Dreamcar seemed fine to me because it felt a bit different and more retro. But the new BA and AFI ate just yawn. I still love AFI but ugh.
Blood seemed to try a bit ( I mean hello- the last song is blues!) and Missing Man had a few unique things on it.
I like AFI
Honestly that does feel like a pretty unpopular opinion here
This sub kind of feels like it's gatekeeping AFI from AFI, like everyone is always so negative and picking apart so many little things about Davey's looks, his voice, etc, excessive hate on pretty much all the newer albums, especially Bodies. Like, I remember watching an interview not too long ago, where the band said that they strive to do something a little different with each album, they don't want to just make the same kind of music forever, but it feels like the fans in here only want them to keep doing the same thing.
I agree with all this. It seems like people stopped being fans ten years ago but still come here to complain about every album and era not being black sails or sing the sorrow again.
To be dead honest I'm not a fan of 3 of the last 4 albums (burials is amazing), it's just hard for me to really enjoy outside of a handful of songs. I've been listening to AFI for over 20 years but I would never gatekeep that opinion, in fact it always makes me happy to know there are people that love CL, Blood Album and Bodies. I still buy albums and merch to support them. I appreciate them trying different things as well, just not into some of it. I'm not in some sort of emo/hardcore/punk denial either, I literally love blaqk audio ffs.
I also don't give a damn about Davey's looks lol. And his voice his godly. Haters be damned.
Bodies is the first meh one for me of the new stuff. I still find it hard to get into the first 2 albums, too. I love BA and Dreamcar. Xtrmst was interesting. I appreciate them still going and making stuff. Just certain stuff off Bodies is meh. I buy merchandise and tickets because I want to support them too. Definitely nothing wrong with not being a fan of everything a band does.
To me, it's just a "change needs to grow on me" thing. Bodies is just extremely different than what I'm used to. Could have something to do with them working with Billy Corgan, perhaps. It's just taking a long time to grow on me, like how the blues sound at the end of Blood did and now I love it.
I like that every album is different since it gives you different songs for difficult moods, situations, etc. Just some fans are more vocal or angry about these things.
It's not 100% gatekeeping to discuss these things. That's why we make forums and posts like this so we can discuss.
You can hate on certain aspects yet still love AFI. I mean I've got a little shrine on my music wall to them and I still constantly listen to them and people know I know way too much about them yet I find things I'll discuss with others because I'm just not a huge fan of some stuff but I still love AFI. It's not wrong to not be a fan of every aspect of a band. It doesn't make you any less of a fan because you don't like certain things.
I, too, like AFI.
I hate Davey’s mullet and eyebrows. There, I said it.
It’s really not a good look, particularly the rat tail mullet.
He’s doing what Curt Smith did in the early tears for fears days and the eye brows are very siouxie. I love the 80s darkwave look probably my favorite era of his aesthetically
I just love that he has eras at all! Even if I could skip the tiny braids myself, I still respect how he fuckin goes for it when he chooses something.
For a band going this hard for this long we should just be stoked they still give a shit at all
I hear you for sure, but I think these things are not mutually exclusive. We can both love something for it’s whole, and critique some of it’s parts. It happens with family members, in romantic relationships, with respect to our countries. I can dislike my sister’s hair colour and still love her more than life itself, right?
hard agree! love it, no notes
ia i think it fits him
I don’t mind the mullet, the eyebrows are down right embarrassing
Ya he looks like an angry bird.
Oh man, pair that with the “squak” he was doing at live shows burials era. We’re really onto something here
For real. I’m ready to launch him and knock some blocks down.
I’m dead lmao
Didn’t think it could get worse than his StS brows but then the Spock brows came marching in
Someone needs to make a meme of the scene from a star is born when Bradley Cooper peels off lady Gaga’s electrical tape eyebrows but it’s Davey
I hate the mullet and think the eyebrows are cool. :,)
The eyebrows... ugh. I know he likes to change up his look, but I just can't get over the eyebrows.
Ugh same! I miss STS Davey. Even DU and CL was ok. But this one is just meh. I mean as long as he likes himself us what matters most but I myself wouldn't want to style myself that way.
Yep, the STS long, wavy & black look was his best IMHO.
If he had just let all of his hair grow out the same as the back he would have had long STS hair in time for the anniversary. I mourn what could have been lol.
Lol
I thought he was cosplaying spok or something lol
So did my husband. :p
Same
I'm not sure if this is "unpopular" but I really wish AFI would start getting some feedback from a producer/mixer again. I understand that there was a lot of pain involved with CL's production, but all of their releases since have suffered from either poor audio quality/balance, or songs feeling flat. I think that Bodies would have probably been a much better album if they had an outside perspective to tell them "hey this isn't working, you should try doing X".
That one interview they did when they said they had 10-12 songs written for DU that they thought were good and played it for the producer and label who then told them it wasn’t good and they went back and wrote most of the better songs off that record sticks out. I feel like Bodies and Blood to a lesser extent really could have used that input.
I think this is a very popular opinion.
Exactly!
On STS, they should have released This Celluloid Dream as a single instead of Girl’s Not Grey.
I have no idea why that song was never performed outside of a handful of times in 2003 until 2017. Easily one of the best songs on that record
They played it at the Philly show this year and it was so good. I was so happy when they played it.
They played it at the Pittsburgh show too, I was so happy.
Played at Chicago during their encore. Outstanding performance.
they just played it last night in portland too! so stoked 😭
This Celluloid Dream was the second encore at the first night in DC and it is soooooo good live! Girl’s Not Grey is good too but I agree
That’s the best song on the entire album, hands down! I’m almost glad it WASN’T the single though bc Girls Not Grey got overplayed for me & I would hate for that to happen with This Celluloid Dream.
I cannot get into Bodies. At all
For me most of it, save for, like, 3 songs, is just good background noise. It's just too dull for me. I had to re-arrange the album by my most favorite to least on my phone in order to feel like listening to it.
It feels like an album comprised entirely of choruses
There are four songs I like. The rest I'm either "meh" about or find a bit annoying. Unfortunate.
Miss Murder is bad. I hate it.
I love Blood and I think that Pink eyes is one of AFIs best ever tracks.
The bass in Pink Eyes is so fun!
Pink Eyes is my favorite from blood album! ❤️
I only liked it because everyone who's anyone knows who AFI is just by me mentioning that song. That and it's nostalgic.
Have you heard the UK version? It honestly was a breath of fresh air and made me love it.
Pink eyes and so beneath you are insanely good
I even like snow cats…
The only thing that has gotten worse about AFI are their fans. The band has matured in all areas including their musical styling and there is nothing wrong with that. They're still putting out incredible music, Bodies included. There is nothing wrong with anyone either agreeing or disagreeing with that. We are all entitled to our own opinions. It's the extreme tribalism and the group of fans who refuse to mature themselves that have been the problem.
This!!!! Especially with all of the ticket debacles lately, I am so sick of seeing “the REAL fans like/do this” or “TRUE AFI fans knew XYZ” etc. We are all different. We have different opinions and priorities, we behave and express our passion for things differently. But regardless we’re all here for the same thing. That’s the beauty of it. The tribalism and gatekeeping should have no place here.
And, the ones who come in to bash on others, hurt them in person, SA them (like I had happened last night), and in general make everyone's experiences horrible should just stay home. I was always of the mindset that AFI fans were like family but lately since covid people have been ruining things for others.
Definitely agreed!
Late, but 100% agree. I went alone to one of the two DC shows, and one of the fans near me have me crap when I said I didn’t go to the other one, like I wasn’t “supporting them enough”. Like, really? We’re going to pull this card while also bitching about the music nonstop? Apparently they didn’t hate the new music enough to stop from going two nights in a row!
The Blood Album was the closest thing to STS.
Burials for me, I can’t listen to one without listening to the other
Burials is criminally underrated
Do people not appreciate Burials?? It’s easily their best album post-00s. I’m shocked that not everyone feels this way.
Maybe this is my unpopular opinion that I didn’t know was unpopular lol
Hard agree.
The first six songs on burials are some of their best post STS music
Someone who gets it!
I agree. burials is def underrated but they still had too many Cure songs for me in that one. But a solid album nonetheless.
Loved the sinking night. Felt awesome having that AFI intro song.
😂 I don’t mind them. I’d just much rather have AFI be AFI then try to be The Cure.
Burials truly felt like a storytelling album just like STS. It was great. Lots of haunting songs and beautiful lyrics. My husband likes it equally to STS. I love it equally as CL and STS.
I feel that Missing Man is closest to StS for me
Yes! That EP feels like it hasn't gotten enough attention.
Missing Man was so unique and made me excited to see what we'd get next but Bodies is definitely not what I was expecting.
SAME
Ditto
You meant Burials. 😁
My favorite album since Sing the Sorrow. Although I think it's 2 songs too long
Mine too. I could do away with Aurelia and Snow Cats and it’d be lovely.
Oh man I love Aurelia and don't mind Snow Cats
I'd take out Above the Bridge because I hate the chorus. It ruins the song for me. And Dark Snow, very forgettable opener. I always start the album with Still a Stranger.
Unpopular for this sub at least, but Miss Murder is a good single and I understand why it's their biggest song.
It’s a banger in person
My unpopular opinion is I hate unnecessarily negative unpopular threads especially when we start attacking people’s physical appearance
I get what you’re saying but when you choose to be an artist and choose to accept fame, there are consequences to that lifestyle: with all the love and adoration comes a certain amount of criticism, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you have to change anything at all. It’s just part of putting yourself out there.
I’m speaking from the position of someone who works in the arts. It’s part of creativity to receive feedback.
You are getting down voted by people that need a hard dose of reality.
I wouldn't pay 1300 dollars for one of their records or a ticket to their show even if I had the money given to me. That is just insane.
Blaqk Audio makes some fucking amazing music
If this is unpopular, I must be the least cool kid in school.
My love for BA is pretty damn endless.
Similarly, I think "I Am Trying Very Hard to Be Here" should've been the main single for "Crash Love".
Also, I think "Veronica Sawyer Smokes" should've gotten the single treatment too. Extremely catchy track.
I really like Davey's current look with the mullet and the eye brows, honestly just on board with whatever creative/fashion choices and always excited to see what he does next.
Also Bodies is a great album and was shocked when I joined this sub at the amount of hate it gets.
Bodies is an incredible record. It feels like the new wave/post punk afi album I didn’t know I needed. Yea it feels like a Blaqk audio record at times but considering I also love darkwave/new wave I love that they’ve sort of blended.
AFI was replaced by the pop stars of Blaq Audio post December underground
They briefly escaped to record Burials but were quickly apprehended.
The Crash Love B-sides are better than the album
I like Bodies.
Mm tell us more
Dulceria, On Your Back, and Begging for Trouble are my favorites. I like Escape from Los Angeles too, and enjoy the post punk feel of Death of the Party.
- As wonderful as Sing the Sorrow is, I think that the imagery, artwork, symbolism and subtleties behind the album are just as (if not more) impressive than the music itself.
- Musically, Crash Love is better than Sing the Sorrow.
- "Fall Children" should be used as a show opener and should be played more often, period. The fact that it hasn't been played live since 2003 is ridiculous.
- "Beautiful Thieves" and "17 Crimes" are the best singles the band has put out.
STS artwork has always been so beautiful, to me. It's why I fell in love with it when it came out and became a huge AFI fan because I just hadn't seen anything like it before.
Crash Love is great at having the same tone that I feel living in the world today, especially being disabled and bullied and such. It sounds/seems happy upfront but the lyrics are dark. It's great! It really spoke to me when I first heard it. It's like me in album form since I seem so bubbly but things are just falling apart under the surface.
Feel like people will hate me for this one but I’m so over Silver and Cold. Could go the rest of my life without ever hearing it again. Was upset to have it take up a setlist spot on the few shows I went to this tour.
ETA: Another one- IMO setlists on the Blood tour were way better than Bodies tour. Maybe it’s because they had just started pulling out a bunch of older/rarer songs on that tour, where now it’s just the same few from there beginning to feel recycled again. Overall have just felt less impressed with this tour though
The Blood tour was incredible.
They didn’t play Silver and Cold in Chicago this tour and I didn’t miss it.
Didn’t get in in NYC either and I was okay with it. All of the singles after having seen them so many times I just got sick of them. I was very happy when they retired Leaving Song Pt2 and not hearing S&C and LLW was refreshing. I hadn’t caught Beautiful Thieves since the CL cycle and I was happy to have that single pop up.
No Silver & Cold in PDX. We got a bunch of older stuff and a B-side last night: Strength Through Wounding, The Lost Souls, Rabbits Are Roadkill On Rt. 37, The Boy Who Destroyed the World, A Single Second, and The Days of the Phoenix.
Blood Tour basically prepped me for the insanity of this tour by giving me 6 to 8, Phoenix, and Morningstar. Then Lost Souls, Ever & A Day, Phoenix, Midnight Sun, and God Called In Sick appeared during the second tour.
The Mourning in Amerika tour helped a bit too with it being a punk scene and getting Malleus Maleficarum & Reiver's Music.
Have been dying to see The Boy Who Destroyed the World but just keep missing it. It’s like the last song left on my list of “ones I MUST see live”. Sounds like a great set!! So jealous!
Same. They've played it more on this tour than normal so I was getting my hopes up they would play it in Philly. Maybe next tour
IMO setlists on the Blood tour were way better than Bodies tour.
It's because the Bodies tour has Bodies songs on it
Most AFi fans cannot be objective.
I like the mullet. And I like weird eyebrows. It may be because I'm gay.
Crash Love is their best work. Yes, better than Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground.
Crash Love ESPECIALLY THE B SIDES, is a masterpiece.
I would give a kidney to hear Fainting Spells live.
Hunter once told me they had been trying it in rehearsals during the CL tour era. Nothing ever came of that...
I love their B-sides so much!
I have put STS, DU, CL, and Burials together as just one long-running epic album because I just love how equally amazing they all are. They're all #1 in my eyes. Then it's TAOD, then BSITS, then Blood, then VPOY, then everything else.
Sinking Night is a better opener than Miseria.
Davey Havok’s lyrics stopped being good after Sing The Sorrow. The drop in quality was always baffling to me.
Definitely less poetic than usual as they went. Blood is where I really felt it the most.
DU has some lyrical moments that are still very poetic. They definitely became rarer after StS though
They are more competent at making money than albums at this point.
I never thought I'd feel this way, but tbh I actually highly agree with this 😞
Reivers Music shouldve been the single from STS
I'm fucking sick of all their special events being for US only.
I fucking hate that they haven't done a headline tour in the UK/Europe for over a decade - I don't like putting in all that time, effort and money to see their shows to only get a support-slot short set with only the singles. And fuck off with only doing festivals - that's almost worse than not coming here at all.
I wish their management would throw us non-US people even a hint of acknowledgement. Do another treasure hunt. Make the prizes fucking posters or artwork downloads, i don't give a shit what the prize actually is, i just want to be able to take part in being a fan again.
I have afi tattoos, signed stuff, photos with the band. All the cds, most of the vinyl. I met my gf through afi, we're coming up to 16 years together. I've met people from all over the world through them who have gone on to be genuine real-world friends who come to visit or have me to stay. I've gone to the weddings and the kids' christenings of people i met through afi - but i haven't been able to go to a proper show since fucking CL because they just don't fucking include us any more
I miss them being a part of my life.
Miss Murder is a great song live
Ready to get down-voted into eternity here but.... Their live performance feels very soulless these days. The fact that both Hunter and Jade never seem to even LOOK at the audience is very off-putting to me
whaaaat really? i went to 5 shows this tour so far and I was sending Hunter pictures I took of him since I favor his side. My sister and I waved to him from the crowd since we got barricade every show and he smiled and waved back at us. He also read my sister's sign and gave her his pick he played with the entire night. Jade came to Hunter's side and made eye contact with me and threw his pick at me too! (but i missed it and it was under my foot the whole f'n time!)
Maybe it was just the show I went to and the videos I watched 🤷
Burials is recorded awfully, sound engineering sucks.
Yup! Love most of the album but don't listen to it as often as I would like because of that reason.
The band died with DU and the inception of BA. It was immediate the sound and style change after that. I wasn’t a big DU fan but it still kind of felt like a AFI record. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy parts of CL and really enjoy Burials, Blood and Missing Man but it feels a bit… phoned in and BA is the focus. Live. On the records. In the writing.
I really don’t know how you go from lyrics on But Home Is Nowhere to “flash flash car crash. Quick now quick take our picture” and “well acted porn’s getting worse”.
Crash Love literally feels like viewing life through the eyes of someone jaded by everything. The lyrics are dark while the beat sounds happy upfront. It fits how the world is right now. Things are falling apart under the surface but everyone acts like they're all having a great time.
Eh, I understand the concept of the record. A lot of the lyrics just weren’t particularly good in my opinion.
Glad to see Burials getting some love in this thread. It is their best post STS album IMO.
I always get downvoted to pieces when I say that Kiss and Control is a terrible song, so I'm here to say Kiss and Control has a terrible chorus and is draining to listen to
Popular AFI opinion: Shatty Fatmas is their worst song, and also has the worst title
I think Kiss kinda dulls the feeling I get listening to DU only because of the screaming.
I have a contrary but also unpopular opinion: Kiss and Control is the one song I have always wanted to hear live from DU more than any other on the album!
SYMAOYE, Black Sails, and Art of Drowning are all way better than Sing the Sorrow. I even like Crash Love more than STS.
Davey’s new look is awful
Oh, I’m opposite. I love STS and could not get into crash love for the life of me.
You had me until liking Crash Love more than StS. That…is truly mind boggling to me.
I just feel like STS is overrated and is honestly when AFI started going downhill, personally. I really like the artwork for it though. I prefer their harder stuff and to me Crash Love feels like it packs more punch than STS, especially if you include the B Sides.
Okay this was like two weeks ago that you said this but it’s so interesting I have to reply lol
So this take is wild to me because I see Crash Love more as a pop album. It’s a great pop album, done by my favourite band as they experiment with sound but saying an album that contains Too Shy to Scream and I’m Trying Very Hard is harder than the one that contains Death of Seasons and LS pt. II is…so fascinating lol. I respect your opinion but I’m shocked by it hahah
Yep, those three records are what I listen to most by AFI. By a pretty wide margin, too. STS > Crash Love, though.
I'm with you, I also like Crash Love more than I like STS nowadays
The first 2 albums I just can't seem to really get into. Same for Bodies. I love everything else. To me, BSITS to Burials is just perfection through and through. Blood, Very Proud of Ya, and Missing Man are good. But those albums in a row are just chef's kiss. I can completely listen through them all without forwarding through any.
I wouldn't like Sing the Sorrow if I wasn't already a fan of AFI and watched their development. Decemberunderground was the final nail in the coffin for me, couldn't stand the sound. (I'm listening to their recent stuff now, and it's way better to my ears)
i like bodies, i think the blood album is the closest theyve sounded to sts/du since those records came out, yall got a lot of balls saying davey looks bad now considering how he looked in the early 2000s
The Despair Faction is a cash grab and Davey and Jade don't really care about AFI or their fans as much as their own projects anymore.
I don't like STS that much. It's alright, I guess.
Davey's flamboyance looks forced.
They should’ve kept Mark as a second guitar player.
Bodies is better than Missing Man EP
I hated Decemberunderground and Crash Love. I fully believe DU should’ve been a blaq audio album or something but those 2 albums don’t sound like afi at all to me.
Everything after Sing the Sorrow is straight garbage
This is totally correct.
I'm religious — Latin Mass going Catholic.
And their music/lyrics only helped me solidify that.
And STS remains my favorite record of all time.
That miss murder is one of my least favorite songs by them.
Love like winter is by far the worst track they’ve ever put out, well pre burials. Everything post burials is highly forgettable
I recently realized that Seether actually pokes fun at them and the music video in their video for Fake It. I grew up listening to the song and watching the video in high school and have no clue how I missed this til now!
At 0:47 - 1:10 then 1:30-1:45, 2:16-2:28 if you don't want to sit through the whole thing: https://youtu.be/gy8HPSIFXEM
They are actually poking fun at evanescence's video for lithium. As it's a response to call me when your sober. (The lead singer dated Amy Lee) so thankfully it isn't a jab at afi 😅
Davey’s vocal cords have too many miles on them. His tone & pitch suck now.
I honestly can't believe people think he sounds better now than in their heyday. I love Davey but his voice has audible wear on it. Im glad hes still able to perform but no way does he sound better now
Singing flat on high notes, always adding the annoying squeals on long notes. No longer overachieving on songs like girl’s not grey. No attempts at screaming.
All the evidence is there.
Dude their touring schedule is absolutely brutal and he’s 46 of course he’s not gonna go for the kinds of screams that made him need vocal surgery. I saw them a couple weeks ago and he screamed plenty, he just sounds different now
100%. And I’ve been going to AFI shows since ‘97. But I’m no expert.
I don't understand why people are so enamored with Rabbits Are Roadkill. I completely get why the band had it recorded, but didn't release it for 3 years.
Sing the Sorrow was one of their weaker albums.
Burials isn’t the band’s darkest album. It’s not even in their top five for bleakest/most emotional album
The invisible man is pretty forgettable
Crash Love is a top 3 album, DecemberUnderground is a bottom 1 album
Anxious and 17 Crimes are the only two songs worth listening to on Burials. that whole album sounds like it was recorded in a moist cave
Aw, but I friggen love I Hope You Suffer
Sing The Sorrow is a masterpiece and would have been just as popular and groundbreaking if they had stuck with Nitro Records. It seems that the long term consequences of signing to a major label were not worth the popularity bump they got from Dreamworks.
Morningstar is the shittiest song they’ve ever made, I don’t genuinely hate very many things but Morningstar sure is one of them
whoever has been handling their branding/graphic design for the past decade has been phoning it in.
