This is the DX Chogokin Bio Robo! It's an old-school Super Sentai megazord that did get an imported release in the 1980s toyline, Godaikin, under the name of Bio Man. It has diecast parts and is VERY rare!
That's so cool! I would love to see his collections! I have a lot of chogokins myself, including some vintage ones like Dyna Robo/Dynaman and Daidenzin. I used to work at a hotel, and there were Japanese guests staying for a long business trip. Since I'm Japanese myself, I was able to have entire conversations with them in Japanese, and one of them really bonded with me because of our love of the Gundam franchise. I showed him some of my photo edits and collections, and he got nostalgic seeing some of the vintage robots in my collection.
My husband’s dad was in the Air Force. He was stationed in Japan at Yakota Air Base for about 4 years. My husband had prime early 80’s in Japan.
That's so cool! Did he ever get his hands on a Voltes V? They go for thousands of dollars on the aftermarket. 💀
If I’m not mistaken, he does. But keeps it boxed. Or he might have two! I’d have to look at his display.
For a second I thought it was "Other Voltron." That's how my brother and I referred to the non-lion version ha ha
Oh, I what you're talking about, believe me. I actually like Dairugger XV/Vehicle Voltron over Golion/Lion Voltron. But did you know World Events Productions saw a robot anime called Daltanious and wanted that to be Voltron? They said to Toei, "Send us the one with the lion!" But they got Beast King Golion instead, and the rest was history! Daltanious's chogokin set alos got released in the Godakin toyline.
Wow you're way beyond my comprehension on that stuff. I just watched the lion cartoon a few times, wanted (but never got) the Matchbox lion toy, and then sort of grew out of it. Haven't thought about it much since. But, glad you like this stuff even now, decades later! 👍
Yeah, I'm Japanese, and only 23. I'm a HUGE 80s and toy enthusiast. I've collected many 80s GI JOE stuff, and my prized possessions are the 87 Mobile Command Center and 84 Skystriker. I also like Kenner's M.A.S.K. products, and I own Miles Mayhem's Switchblade. I've also listened to a shit ton of 80s pop/synthwave and rock, like Kim Wilde, Depeche Mode, and Def Leppard, and my favorite non animated TV show is Miami Vice. Many older people get surprised that I recognize older songs on the radio, and I generally resonate with 80s kids than people I my own age. I hang around this subreddit often, reminiscing a time I wish I could have witnessed, like small child marveling at a dinosaur exhibit in a city's natural history museum.
Aw man, he's missing his hands. I had one of these and quickly learned not to take it to school because the boys loved shooting those hands and didn't care where they landed or if they got lost.
Oh yeah, these old robots often had a rocket punch gimic. It's insane, and the last time Bandai made a rocket punching robot for kids was 2016's Cube Gorilla/Zyuoh Wild from Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger.
Looks like a Daileon with Jaspion colors.
Beautiful find. He’s one of my favorites! I bought him in the 80s when I my family stopped in Japan on a trip to the Philippines. I still have him in box somewhere in the basement complete with tiny red pilot that goes into Bio 1. All the missing accessories/fists may be a little difficult to find but I’m sure there are 3D print options out there now to complete yours. He is amazing shape.
It's... It's beautiful!
I swear I had one of these. Enough that I recognized the hands were missing immediately, and thinking "that's the Voltron ripoff I used to have".
Hey, I was like 6 when I got it.
Cool beans!
Is this a knock-off Voltron?
No, Voltron was the adaption of the 1981 anime Beast King Golion. Super Sentai has existed since the mid 70s, and their first megazord was in 79. Go Lion/Voltron was always released in Godakin toyline BEFORE Voltron aired on TV. Also, Japanese giant combining robots in general have been a thing since the early 70s with things like Getter Robo. Lastly, Super Sentai and Go Lion were both created by Toei, and both of their toys were made by Popy/Bandai.
Nice!
Not sure if my husband has ever had Bioman. But he’s got a lot of chogokins.
