as many are aware, the only way to WATCH a uhd bluray disk on pc is with an intel processor that supports SGX. 11th gen and newer core series processors ditched the support. i got to thinking and checked xeon, and sure enough, they still support SGX. building a new system would be way too expensive, but used ones are dirt cheap. has anyone tried them? i was looking at getting a cheap mini-pc with a 10th gen i3, but a xeon workstation seems far more practical for both long term sustainability as well as personal backup storage.
MakeMKV can decode 4K discs in real time for playback in MPV, VLC etc no matter what your CPU is
Why in the blue hell is it so difficult to watch movies on PC anymore? I hadn't had or used a PC much or at all, up until I bought a gaming laptop 3 years ago, since the last gaming one I made back in, like, 2007, and it’s been really annoying to discover how much of a hassle it is to play even regular blu rays on the thing. The program I've been using works alright, I guess, but blu rays always seem to have issues syncing the audio, so you always have to tinker around with the audio offset whenever you play something.
There are other ways to watch UHD on pc. Not elegant, but there are ways. Doing so kind of defeats the purpose, though. Might as well just use a player. Far better to just rip the disc and store the movie. That way you ditch the DRM and are able to use any media player you want.
Any recommendations on a good program for ripping blu rays and UHD disc?
MakeMKV
that's what i've been doing. i have an lg bp60nb10 with libredrive firmware and have about a 3rd of my collection ripped (out of space lol). i just want the ability to insert disc, watch movie without the hassle of setting up my xbox.
I've never tried a xeon system. That being said, PwerDVD required SGX for watching UHDs on a PC, however the latest versions of PowerDVD no longer support playing UHDs at all, so going to the trouble of getting a xeon workstation and then tracking down an older PowerDVD release seems like a lot of work for something that will likely break at some point once the older PowerDVD releases stop working.
You're better off looking at something like MakeMKV or DVDFab.
False, I watch UHD blu-ray discs on my PC. I have a modern computer, built just a couple years ago.
My optical drive is a Pioneer BDR-S13U-X.
You just need two primary programs: RedFox's AnyDVD, and MakeMKV.
For a player, VLC or MPC both work. You need to jump through a couple hoops, but I just recently fired up Kung-Fu Panda and Rango, both newer releases, and they work fine.
