Produce warehouse workers have peeling fingertips?
Team member postThey are just regular cotton gloves I think. But consensus seems to be allergic reaction so will look into it. Thank you for the help
This is more of you not knowing what you may be allergic too problem than a Woolies problem.
I would say this is a dish soap cleaning problem but this is too controlled and concentrated lol
Not dish soap as its onyl happen since starting this job but I didn't realise this was something you could be allergic to lol 😂 will definitely look into it
Have you considered you might be allergic to work ? 🤔🤪
He has a term us I'm the industry know as "Sikidus"
I’d get the perishables ‘Ninja’ branded gloves as long as you take them off when you do anything soaked in water if will save your hands from cuts the build up from cutting pumpkins. The store should be ordering them so snag some
I'd be asking for powderless gloves which your manager can order from the GNFR catalogue. I use them because counting money ruins my hands.
Also get some really good hand moisturiser. The hemp based one from the Body Shop works for me, or something thick for hands that do a lot of manual work.
Thanks so much for the help
Are your hands constantly wet and dry? I’m finding I get similar from my work, which involves wet hands a lot. Not sure what the answer is though.
Editing to add that the tough hands branded cream helps but doesn’t fix it fully.
Only from my sweat lol, I work as a selection picker in a fresh produce warehouse. I'm hoping there's an alternative to taking the gloves off as it gets quite cold in the warehouse.
Consensus seems to be allergy or moisturising creams to help.
I hope that shit doesn't fall into the food 😒
I'm not propping any food lol
Look, you're hands are probably sweating in your gloves. We had the same problem with sweaty feet and foot rot. Gotta keep your hands dry, try talc or regularly change your gloves to fresh ones.
Wild, I’ve been in produce sheds for 4 years and never seen that before, hope you’re both okay and find something to help and heal them
Yeah talking to the coworkers it's definitely not a normal thing as I was thinking maybe it was just friction with the gloves. Seems to be a bigger underlying problem.
These look like chemical blisters. You use strong chemicals to wash your cutting boards. Or maybe someone else is using the wrong product and then you’re coming in contact with. Best to wear gloves as much as possible.
Sorry I think I should've mention that I'm a selection picker in a fresh produce warehouse. So there's no use of any chemicals in my work place that I'm cominginto contact with.
Do you handle a lot of mangos or kiwi fruit? Or pineapple? These can all cause skin reactions in people for different reasons depending on the fruit
I used to get this all the time working in a kitchen. I think it was the wetness of always having to wash my hands but I did notice things like pineapple had a habit of eating through them faster.
Gloves are a multiplier for the problem since they trap sweat in and it's caused by sweat
Sorry post won't let me edit, but I should've mention I'm actually not handling or prepping any food directly. I'm just grabbing a box then chucking it onto a pallet.
Is it a new job? Has it been a long time since you last worked, or a first job perhaps? I'm wondering if it's just blisters from your fingers not used to constant heavy work, similar to the blisters one gets [on chord fingers] when learning to play guitar.
Is it a new job, been about a month and first time constantly heavy lifting good to hear it just could be my body getting used to the job. Any idea how long before it stops then?
100% allergic reaction… is it latex? The produce? You won’t know until you test….
(Not a produce worker).
That looks a bit like the contact dermatitis that I get. For me, it's caused by touching something I am allergic to. Mangos are woeful for me, but it's not the right season for those.
Have you been touching anything new that coincided with getting the rash/skin peeling?
Quit
Woolworths workers finding out what work really means type post.
What are the gloves made of? You may have an allergy to the material. Many years of working as a Dental Nurse left my mother with an allergy to rubber gloves, for instance - this would leave her with peeling, irritated skin.
You may also need to moisturize your hands if they are getting dry.
