Wilderness Medicine Elective Help!

Questions and Scenarios

Hi all! First post on Reddit here. I’m a 4th year medical student in the UK and have been starting to think about my elective which takes place early 2025. Ideally. I ’d love to do something pre-hospital and out of England, which probably lends itself to anaesthetics/emergency. Also somewhere with a lot of wilderness/mountains!!

Does anyone have any experience or advice on personal experience, resources or organisations that would be good to look into regarding this? Also, any knowledge on bursaries as I don’t have a lot of money to throw at it!!

I’d be grateful for any advice surrounding any of this, thanks so much for reading my post !! :))

Jefferson hospital/SydneyKimmel Medical school in Philadelphia has an upper year elective that take from outside the program.

They do a few weeks in the Rockies and a few weeks in the slot canyons of Utah. I’ve taught skills sessions for them before, it’s a legit program.

The National Outdoor Leadership Schoolhas an incredible med student elective in Wyomimg, USA. It might be a bit out of your price range, however they do have scholarships. I would say that's probably the best one in the US and possibly the world.

Also, check out the programs through World Extreme Medicine, R2RandCorom. They may have some stuff you might be interested in.

Lots of med schools in the western US have wilderness med electives for med students- from a quick google Stanford, UCSF-Fresno, University of Nevada Reno, and others. I have friends who did the UCSF-Fresno clerkship and got a lot out of it.

Many of these rotations are designed for students at the parent institution- you'll need to talk to them to see if they accept outside students. Cost may be an issue.

You'll also need a student visa to come to the US. Talk to a US embassy or consulate, but its $500 to apply.
