I hope they do an entirely new story and not an adaptation. Hope it doesn’t play it too safe, I do have a hard time imagining a good Watch Dogs story that isn’t too goofy but isn’t too serious.
If they do, I hope gameplay / storytelling is similar to the first game.
Completely agree. Do a retelling of Aidan Pierces story with changes here and there but make it about Aiden Pierce. This movie should be dark and gritty and really should focus on how much of a one man army he was with his technical and physical ability.
I would love it if that's how it went but I have a feeling that it'll lean more into the direction of Watch Dogs 2 or Legion. More like a punk story than a vigilante story if that makes sense?
I mainly think this because if the movie is a success then they'll want to make a sequel and theres more for them to work off in the other 2 games

Second game mechanics are really good but the first game just slaps. Aiden is a good character. Simple, but good.
If only people understood what good writing and pacing was then the tone of 1 would’ve continued as it should’ve and not became the absolute clown show it’s turned into.

It was tighter than gta 5 honestly. Way better story I thought and more fun moment to moment gameplay. Blowing up steam pipes and hacking peoples convos and distracting guards with phantom texts was so cool and original.
It got too much hate just because of the graphical downgrade. The dark vibe and the Batman feel were so cool.
Seriously wd2 story is all over the place wd3 is a literal joke and one thing I couldn't stand about wd2 is that the hacking was awesome but gunplay was boring and dull unlike wd1

After stuff like Arcane, the Fallout series, CP Edgerunners and similar, I'm a little more optimistic of video game related movies/tv series, unless we have proof that this is a Halo from Paramount situation, where these people have zero connections to the Watch Dogs franchise. That'd be worrying.

the depiction of the animus was kinda bad, i kinda know what they were going for but it could have been better
It could have been so good man. The cast is stellar. I love Michael Fassbender, Brendan Gleeson and Jeremy Irons. I really enjoyed the parts where actual assassin's creed stuff was going down inside the animus. The out of the animus plot was a cool idea but not done well at all.
That was the issue. They can barely time manage modern day in games, a movie needs to be solely focused on one or the other. A TV show would probably easier to manage them.

it's very rare for a movie to be truly mid. assassins creed achieved that with stellar actors and terrible plot management.

For me WD2 was peak of the series. It perfectly depicted what I personally expect from a hacker game. An actual hacker group for example. WD1 in that case always seemed a bit off for me, cause it is a great game, but didn't fit the "hacker theme" enough. It was more a thriller like Max Payne or something, rather than a game about hackers. That's why I loved WD2 so much.
Legion tho was... idk. It wasn't really bad honestly, and the "play as everyone" mechanic sounded awesome. But I think this was what made the game not good in the end. Cause nobody had actual character development. Same as Far Cry 5 and New Dawn. No identity at all. And let's not forget the obvious downgrades. Especially parkour like wtf? 1 and 2 had great parkour, how could they possibly fuck this up THIS bad?! Just copy and paste the old system into Legion and it would've been 100x better... but I do like the game tho. London for example was the most beautiful setting in the series imo. And also graphics wise it was really good, atleast on next gen.
At this point I really hope they do another watch dogs game one day. Preferably something like WD2 gameplay, setting, characters mixed with a story like in WD1
Not only everything you covered but it was a fantastic execution of open world, whilst not being an absolutely comprehensive environment, you could do a hell of a bludy lot in the city and from an aesthetic pov I think it’s the best depiction of the 3 used cities
I love 2 for the setting and the sailing around the bay was actually pretty fun although not as good as black flag. Just cruising and jamming was some of my best fun and the soundtrack was dope

i feel like they focused too much on the play as any NPC gimmick. idk much about the game so i could be wrong, but i’m a fan of the first two and to me that immediately felt like, while unique and ambitious, not a very good idea. especially when i started seeing gameplay.

If it's a story about Aiden and the first game the movie should be a pretty safe bet, if they choose another installment (or what they did with assassin's creed and create their own story in the universe) then it's much more likely to be hit or miss

All they needs is the idea of a private tech company providing the government a citizen surveillance and data collection service through invasive cameras (security cameras, cell phone cameras, car cameras, smart home devices) and monitoring social media accounts.
Then either go the WD2/WD3 route and throw in a group of hackers trying to overthrow Elon Zuckertrump by getting people to download the Pied Piper to hijack to crowd source processing server based on everyones 10% processing power of their devices, to fry the Meta-Star-Truth servers located on the moon.
Or the WD1 route, acknowledge that the above is happening, but its a dude on revenge against a mafia gang whose supporting Elon Zuckertrump. Dude just wants to stop the technology from getting abused, but he himself is abusing it in order to fight against criminal groups who are also using it, and to dig up dirt to drive public opinion of the technology down.
