Discogs seller had it listed as Near Mint... Yeah, not so sure about that
RecordMost vinyl sold is graded visually unless otherwise stated.
It may look perfect and yet sound like crap.
A reasonable seller will work with you and make things right.
He did! He agreed to do a partial refund
Sounds like it worked out where you are happy…that’s great.
P.S. Yes, I cleaned both the record and the stylus before playing. I also gave it a go with my 3600L (which I primarily use with beat-up records)
Show us the stylus! (Although more than likely this is just a seller that visually graded vs play graded)

Shitty android lens. Those are the best shots I could get, sorry
I bought exactly one 45 online as an impulse buy with an LP I wanted.. listed at NM it looked like someone used 60-grit sandpaper on it. No more 45's, nope never again.
Just bought a 45 I really wanted from Brazil from a Discogs seller that was rated NM. It was legit NM and shipped to my house in 3 days. Depends completely on the seller.
Why no more 45s? That's one bad seller who has graded it falsely... nothing to do with the fact it's a 7 inch single
That was exactly my case. Bought it along with an actual Near Mint LP copy of Mardi Gras and another 45 (Paranoid, which was listed as Good and ironically it doesn't skip at all lmao) from the same seller, no complaints about those two tho.
Even "Good" records need to play through without skipping to meet that grade under Goldmine and Discogs standards. Any seller grading something as Good or better and then describing skips is gaslighting you.
Did you try cleaning them and your stylus?
Try cleaning the record and needle see if that helps🤞🏼
I have a personal policy when buying online from anyone. I don't buy anyone who lists anything as near mint. For the exact reason, that is the subject of this post. Almost always people who claim something is near men are totally lying or just completely wrong. I found that people who list things as very good plus are generally closer to near mint than people who list things as near mint.
I actually find this the hardest part of selling vinyls online. I completely agree and you and I follow a similar line of thinking when buying online.
However, I have a couple of records that turned out to be rarer than I expected. Looking at the records themselves they look rather sad but I cleaned one, spun it and there was hardly any pops or crackles, less than what appears on records I listen to regularly and look cleaner visually.
I think this just means the scratches are surface level. But at that point what would I list them as? Audibly I would consider them near mint but cosmetically without the context I’d hearing them spin I’d hesitate to sell them whatsoever.
I will say that i have found that older vinyls, from the 60s-70s, tend to be a little more durable in terms of playabiltiy vs. visual grading. I think for your question, you clarify that it is a VG visually but plays VG+ or something similar. More information is always better.
Every record is approximately near mint. He just didn't inform you about the approximation error
What do you mean? My copy sounds exactly the same and I’d sell it as near mint (mint is the name of the cat who sleeps on my Eagles records)
Maybe by “mint” they mean “Never played, but stored in a dusty ass box for decades”
It's not discogs who graded it, you bought from a private seller!
I’ve gotten near mint records from discogs with torn up spines and dog hair on the vinyl
Still better than a first press Zeppelin 4 I just got in the mail with a VG+ grading. Look like someone took a grater to it on both sides. With a quarter sized spot that was nearly worn through the record. Not even playable
Sometimes people go by the physical looks next time ask if theyve played tested it and id it sounds fine or if theres anything worth noting
Until Discogs includes pictures I won't buy from them anymore. So many things are falsely graded. Is it the only site online where you aren't able to sell and upload pics?
It looks 80 percent mint.
As an avid 45 collector who buys from Discogs, this pain is all too real. I assume most sellers don't have the time to do anything but visually grade, but if you're going to sell a "NM" single for $10+, you'd think they'd think about playtesting them.
I feel like it's not worth the hassle for what is essentially ~5-10 bucks most of the time to bother talking to the seller who will probably be indignant, and if you leave negative feedback they are going to retaliate. I just look for sellers that have absolutely 0 negative feedback and pray.
I should probably move to Ebay or something
That’s the worst. My condolences…. Looks like another wall hanger
Yeah... I take online ratings with a grain of salt. I almost never agree with what the sellers have graded albums when I buy online.
Update: Seller agreed to do a partial refund
Can't even blame you for that one. NM usually means at least VG-, in my experience. Sorry for your misfortune. :/.
God if I could go the rest of my life without hearing hotel california I’d be so happy. Ya I didn’t even capitalize the name of the song.
Is that styrene? It's hit or miss with those. Generally they're of poorer quality compared to their vinyl counterparts. They were injection molded instead of pressed as a cheaper alternative to vinyl. And they were intended to be used in juke boxes for a short period of time so never meant to last long.
It's 100% vinyl. I have another 45 that is in fact made out of styrene, which has a higher pitch ring when you hit it compared with this record and others I have
I don't believe there exists a NM 7" record. Anywhere.
There are some that I have that are
Well, I don’t believe you. :)
Tbf they’re newer ones lol
Fair. Now that I think about it...I do have one 7" I bought new that sounds pretty close to NM.
But seems like a 7", once taken out of the sleeve, magically drops to VG most of the time. :)
That’s so many of the records I buy 😭 I bought a copy of NIN’s The Fragile and it was sealed, brand new, and sounded crunchy
NM-

people need to leave negative reviews (0 and 1’s) for people who blatantly lie about album/sleeve quality…..lowering the sellers reputation the only way to stop this
