AI truck illegally passing, what gives? they used to drive way too slow, but now speeding?
ATSIt is definitely illegal to speed just to pass someone... A lot of people still do it, but that doesn't make it legal.
Not everywhere.
this is california, where it is

as a California resident, that doesn't stop either trucks or passenger vehicles from doing so

The point of a simulator (as in American Truck SIMULATOR) is to mimic real life as closely as possible, not to create a utopia where nothing wrong happens.
I would agree with you if the mechanic you have an issue with wasn't part of the simulation. It's a simulation game about truck driving, randomly speeding trucks and cars come part and parcel with the job. The game is giving you the convenience of not having to get a CDL or be an owner/operator. In my eyes it's more accurate that there would be random law breakers, and it happens so rarely that i see it as a silly little occurrence than a big inconvenience.
It's not that deep tho
is to get away from the bullshit that happens in the real world
Yeah, bullshit like the stupid ass 55mph speed limit in California.
On a side note, why are you so triggered by a truck passing you in game? What part of this "bullshit" harmed or inconvenienced you in anyway?
The point of simulators is to simulate the real world.
It's a simulator, I'd expect them to break laws and drive dumb. And they do. It's great
If ATS is too hardcore for you, maybe you should read books instead or something🤣
Well, it is a simulator. Which means that there's got to be bad drivers in it. You know to make it a simulation. But I still don't understand why everybody's downing you. That makes no sense at all.
In the state of literally anywhere in the world it is illegal to pass if you need to go over the speed limit to do so. The speed limit doesn't stop applying just because you want to overtake someone.
not true at all, there are multiple american states that have a momentary passing speed written into the law. off the top of my head, i think both texas and idaho allow either 10 or 15mph to pass
California dumb
Sociopathic speeders really don't want to hear it, but it's true in all 50 states. Even common sense would tell them this is the case. They're part of the reason why no one can afford car insurance anymore.
Why is this downvoted people?
I mean the statement is accurate. It is fact. So why would it be downed? I swear, common sense is gone extinct. That and there must be a lot of juveniles on this sub.
You are literally allowed to go faster when you're passing. And if he's not governed at 55 then he's going to do just that.
Actually... your not... ask my attorney how "going faster to pass" in cali worked out for me...
Lol same for me in AZ
Agree the basis of the logic is poor. Speeding is speeding in the eyes of the law. The reason for speeding doesn’t matter.
Ya you are allowed to speed up to pass, however if the traffic on the right is all speeding and you are passing then you are in the wrong (and I know the traffic on the right never stays at or below the speed limit).
You are not "allowed" to speed at all.. even passing.. it is "tolerated" by enforcement..
And if you think people don't go slower than 55-60 in a 65 in cali you've obviously never been there.. but you bet your ass the second I decide to move over and pass them it's all of a sudden a drag race and the whole highway speeds up...
Show me any law that says this, I don't think any state/country would have a law that says "Go ahead drive faster than the speed limit, just make sure you're passing a vehicle while doing it."
https://leg.mt.gov/bills/mca/title_0610/chapter_0080/part_0030/section_0030/0610-0080-0030-0030.html
We get a bonus 10mph here.
Montana should just bring back the autobahn rules
I'd vote for you.
Reasonable and prudent, with no open container laws? Hell. Yeah. Brother.
That's specifically just for passing in a two way, two lane road, not on a highway.
He said “show me a law that says you can speed as long as you’re passing” and that’s what I provided.
I actually didn’t believe it was a thing myself until I looked it up.
Nah you're good, it was more of a general statement to add to the discussion lol.
Entirely valid, sorry for the defensiveness!
Do the cops know this? I’m genuinely curious.
In the game? I have no idea.
In reality? I have equally no idea, road law enforcement out here is a total hit or miss.
In my country you are not fined if you go up to 20km/h over the speed limit. Anything beyond is fined. Unfortunately, it means pretty much everyone treats that as a 20km/h higher speed limit.
Which country is that?
Sounds like fun!
Passing isn’t ever illegal unless there’s an explicit sign or lane markings indicating a “No-Passing” zone.
What’s illegal here is speeding, and that’s all you’d get a ticket for unless there’s a line of cars behind you, then they’ll probably slap ‘impeding traffic’ on top.
There’s also undertaking, but that varies wildly from place to place.

So you're telling me that peeps in Commiefornia who aren't governed at 55 don't do what's in the video? However you cut it it's dumb ass complain to have.
I was expecting something....quicker when I read the word speeding. This looks like that truck is passing you going maybe 2-3mph faster than you 😂

That's fair, within those black and white terms, I would agree with you, they are going faster than the posted limit.
But like most laws, it's not always so cut and dry like that. For example, if they didn't accelerate slightly faster to pass you, and instead matched your speed in the left lane, then they would be impeding the flow of traffic and could also get a traffic violation for that, also "Legally" speaking. At the end of your clip, the other truck then taps the brakes to slow back down to the legal limit. So temporarily they are speeding, in order to safely pass you and clear the path of the left hand lane.
(But this is also a game, so the law doesn't actually apply here lol)
That's fair, within those black and white terms, I would agree with you, they are going faster than the posted limit.
OP was also speeding doing 60mph at the end of the video.
😂 I didnt even notice that
That's not speeding, 5 miles over the speed limit is a small "failure to recognize speed" warning. It's barely a deal and almost every cop wouldn't give two shits from a fuck to pull you over for it
So were you. Stop crying.
Some trucks go faster than others.
Lol as a real truck driver other truckers pass me over the speed limit all the time, this is pretty realistic
Nothing to see here folks, move along, looks normal.
It's probably a bug that they're using the car limit. Every traffic mover has a set max speed and they will always go that speed unless the current speed zone prohibits it. In this case it SHOULD be going 55 however it appears to be going 65, which is the car speed limit.
No, all AIs can randomly speed. The probability depends on region of the map.
Mind your own business, human.
He’s got places to be
All AI vehicles can speed with some probability. It's very obvious that it's artificial because they still go at a certain constant speed, that just happens to be at +X to the speed limit.
My question is, why are you NOT speeding. I be zoomin 90+ with log haulers son gittyup
What kind of person goes exactly the speed limit in ATS?
Me lol. When I can be bothered to get my steering wheel out, I honestly can spend 10 hours a day making micro adjustments to steering going up the motorway with the CC on.
Me. As fun as it is speeding (Which is what I do when I'm running late), I find it enjoyable just enabling the 65mph speed limiter and cruising along.
I go 65 on the interstate everywhere but California (I drive older trucks that wouldn't pass smog so I simply don't go there), so I'm often traveling 5-10 under. It saves fuel, and it makes pacing much easier + safer with realistic physics dialed in. It should be said that I prioritize realism in ATS whenever possible.
I do in ATS and ETS2. Usually have cruise control set to the speed limit on highways.
It seems realistic. Most people in the US don’t go the exact speed limit (even truck drivers).
1) What is on a drivers test doesn’t translate to the real world. I mean look around you next time you go out. 2) California is stupid 3) It’s a damn game 4) Go outside and touch some grass or something
Traffic is set to move 5 mph faster on the left lane regardless of what vehicle it is
Well given irl I can be doing the governed 65mph on a 65mph highway and get passed by a pair of bull haulers doing 85-90, I’d say this is definitely realistic.
I personally like that they’ve added more variation in speed between vehicles though in my opinion there should be a lot more passenger cars speeding as in real life.
They're burning money going that fast, diesel is more expansive in gasoline in USA
Just this morning, I was going 70 (speed limit) on my way to work and a semi hauling a trailer passed me on the left. Trucks definitely speed.
Mom it's my turn to post about the AI!
Man you would literally die in 4 minutes if you drove any of my trucks dawg I run 90 mph with oversize loads dude.... Fwm
I've seen this a lot since I got the game around when 1.47 came out, I know that's not too long ago but still, it seems pretty normal to me
Bruh, nothing wrong happened and if you are getting pissed at an AI truck passing you then you need to go touch grass 💀
This has always been the norm....I see no issues. When I followed the speed limit the trucks and other traffic would pass.
Man youd hate to have a cdl irl if this is what upsets you lmao
I guess you've never been to California. California is the only state with a statewide 55mph truck speed limit in the United States and it's also the lowest of any state. The next lowest is 60mph in Washington. All of the other 46 of the lower 48 states are 65+ and most of them don't even have truck speed limits. When truck drivers go to California, they don't do 55 because it's a ridiculously slow speed. Most trucks are doing at least 60 with many of them doing 65-70. So this is just realistic.
Speed Limit is 65, you were going 56, old mate removed his speed limiter and said "SEE YA"
Bro this can't be a real post 😭
AI's being a real trucker, no BS just him and the highway getting it done.
Looks like it’s doing like 5 over
Well it's on cam so report the driver to the police, they won't be speeding no'mo!
Most of the time they still drive slow holding up traffic, never fear! haha. Next time, swap lanes and block the truck.
He’s running on GPS speed while you’re looking at your speedometer. That’s actually pretty common in real life.
I hate how slow the NPCs go, especially on the freeway. I was driving the speed limit and one just brake checked me! also, i find it annoying how they just merge into your lane without warning when you can’t move.
lmfao as someone who lives in Cali...none of the truckers follow the 55 speed limit and CHP rarely gives a fuck anymore. We got trucks doing 65-70 in the travel lane nowadays.
Are we really complaining about AI “illegally” passing in a video game…… unless you are in California, he’s going more the speed limit than you.
Never going fast enough for the AI traffic. Was doing 145 kph and got passed like I was doing 50 by another truck Just like this.
This sub complains about the AI being unrealistic because it follows the law too well and then you have people complaining when they act more realistic and bending the rules.
It's ATS the speed limit means minimum speed to most people.
Unrealistic as the other truck didn't swerve at you as it passed
This your first day? The AI generally follows the car speed limits. And they don't stay out of the left lane.
The game isn't built to be a brutally accurate simulation of every little issue as its true and legal in that one place. Which, oddly enough, kinda makes it more realistic.
Why is it like this? Because it's easier to code.
He's got 10 forward gears and a Georgia overdrive.
I don't see why you arent going 5 over as its your right to be 5 over, Nothing in the DMV rules for driving says its wrong to be driving anything other then the speed limit
You’re going 55 and there’s a 65 mph speed sign where he passed you.
It's a simulator...
I would say it's illegal as he's in the outer lane and going quicker
Not an illegal pass but I don't think that the Ai truck even turned on its' blinker
I do 80 through there…
i dont see anything illegal. to PASS someone you need to go faster than them
