I’m planning a trip to Germany (solo) and im wondering what are the best places to go see and the fastest way to get around.

I’ll be in Konstanz for a week doing a school course at the university. After that I’ll have a week to do whatever I please.

Some places I noted: - Munich -Lake Ebisee - Konigsee - Neuschwanstein castle

Is this worth it? I was going to rent a car since these places are quite far from each other. Is there a better way to see Germany in a week? And what hostels or airbnbs would be central to do so.

Other option: Malta, Italy

Personally I’d stick to public transportation in Germany. Riding the trains is part of the experience!

Consider booking a tour for the trips around Munich. For example when I went to Neuschwanstein the guide went over history on the train ride. Having someone else handle logistics also means you enjoy the experience vs. trying to figure out where to park.

Get the 49 euro ticket and get unlimited train rides in regional trains. You can reach all these destinations in a reasonable time like that.

Buy it at a provider without long notice period and don't forget to cancel.

Just to add to this so OP doesn't get stuck paying for longer on the ticket (it is a MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION, and not a single purchase):

From what I understand - as I will be getting this for my upcoming June trip to Germany - you must purchase it before the 10th of the month you wish to use, then make sure to also CANCEL BEFORE the 10th of the same month. Otherwise it will renew for the following month too.

Verify this on your own, but this is the information I have put together from the DB website and from other helpful redditors.

That's only true if you buy it with db. There are a lot of other companies that sell it. I like mopla because you can buy it anytime and cancel it anytime ( until the last day of the month). Also they accept foreign credit cards.

Another question: Are the German trains as unreliable as so many people make them out to be?

The last time I used trains the German and Swiss systems were the gold standard of efficiency and the Italian system was unreliable. Now it seems the German trains are just as late and slow as the Italian ones used to be.

I ask, b/c I am using the regional trains almost exclusively for an upcoming trip to Germany in June.

Short answer: yes. The regional trains are a little better but expect cancelled, late and full trains. Italy's train services are way more reliable. You must have been in Germany over 30 years ago😁

While you're in Konstanz, try visiting Freiburg im Breisgau and Straßburg. Even though Straßburg is in France, it's one of the few border cities that the 49Euro ticket covers - as in, only the regional train to Straßburg is covered by this ticket and NOT travelling by local transportation within Straßburg.

I prefer a car in Germany. If you like castles or fantasy, you could drive the romantic route. Neuschwanstein castle is worth a visit, but Eltz , Herrenchiemsee and so many others are also worth considering. If you do rent a car try and find a nice fast German one. It is not every day that you get to drive on the autobahn.

Fastest way is definitely by car. Keep in mind you’ll likely have to drop off your car where you picked it up - or pay quite a hefty fee.

Munich and Eibsee aren’t all that close to each other, I’d put Eibsee on a separate tab.

I’d do Munich, pick one of the lakes, do Schloss Neuschwanstein (but make a day of it and see both castles, worth it imo). In that general vicinity I would also recommend visiting the Partnachklamm. Don’t base yourself in Munich the entire time or you’ll be driving back and forth A LOT

In Munich there’s a couple of things you can do and it kinda depends on what your personal preferences are. The Residenz or Nymphenburg if you’re not all castle’d out, Allianzarena if you’re into football, Hofbräuhaus for some beer and some history, …

OP didn’t ask about the cheapest, they asked about the fastest option. Renting a car is the fastest option, and easiest if you’re moving about the alps and want to explore the surrounding area.

Also I was commenting on Konstanz to Munich, not after that.

Imo it makes no sense to rent the car in Konstanz already.

If drop off fee isn’t an issue I personally would rent it in Konstanz, do Neuschwanstein etc first and then take it up to Munich (or closeby-ish / reachable by a direct train) and hand it back there. I think doing Konstanz to Munich then back to the Alps (and then presumably back to Munich as surely there is a return flight to be gotten at some point) is a really weird way of going about it
