do you wash it immediately after/is it good practice?
This. with shoes that slip off easily like Birkenstocks
Oh my gosh. This is genius.
Yes ditto, white tank top underneath just in case!
white tank top?
I always find that one slightly sheer shirt, or that button up, or a nice jacket while thrift hunting that somehow would always look better with a tank/undershirt. White tank tops usually work for me universally!
didnt think about that! thanks! :)
I always like to wear a Black Tank Top (never thought of white but then again I hardly wear white tank tops) while thrifting. That way I can just try things on overtop of it and don’t need a changing room.
thanks for the reply!
ofc :)
Eh… I have never felt the need to wash my whole outfit after thrifting. I just do my laundry like normal.
For real. In my town they find bed bugs on the bus. I feel like the thrift shop is really no dirtier than Walmart. In fact I've seen some really disgusting things at Walmart I've never seen at a thrift store.
I work at a public library. There is nothing I bring home from thrifting that can be worse than what I risk bringing home from work everyday.
That said, I change clothes immediately after work, no exceptions, but I don’t necessarily do the same when I get back from thrifting.
Honestly, seeing what happens on public library furniture makes me kind of never want to sit on ANY public furniture ever again. Definitely not if it’s fabric.
I do wash clothes I get from thrifting immediately. That’s to mitigate bed bug risk but also just because you never know the last time it got washed and I’m sensitive to detergents and perfumes so I’d rather get any old detergents and perfumes out before I wear it.
i haven't seen any bed bugs at a thrift store that i know of fortunately but have had bed bugs in the house, but that's not to say they've come from thrifting * i hope not *
meaning you put it in the laundry then wash when it's regular laundry time?
Yes.
I know people who wash their house keys.
People are really weird about germs
Dang. They’re gonna have rusty keys!
meh, no. is it good practice? probably - it won't hurt, will also kill any bed bugs if you're afraid of that, but it's not necessary.
although i always wash my thrifted clothing, you really should do that if you don't - you don't know who wore it before, it usually smells not-so-pleasant, there can be cat hair etc.
I always wash any thrifted clothing, but usually it all just smells of HIGHLY scented laundry detergent. I wash them until that “odor” is gone. If something looks gross in the store, aka animal hair etc, I won’t buy the item.
Adding Arm and Hammer super washing soda in the yellow box with your regular soap helps get out detergent smells faster.
thanks for the reply! yes i do wash thrifted clothing. also have had bed bugs, not necessarily from thrifting, so can get paranoid
on the bedbug front, I now run any clothes/textiles I thrift through the dryer for an hour as soon as I get home and before washing -- there's a little shelf for the inside of the dryer, so delicates don't agitate.
These thrifting posts about bed bugs and washing clothes after thrift shopping make me eally appreciate my local thrift stores. Also, if you're a germa-phobe, have OCD about hand washing or germs,, don't like people being in your close personal space, or any reservations--at all--about used clothing or household items; thrifting might present some challenges.
Oh grasshopper, you are so naive. BB nymphs are tiny and in many cases undetectable by the naked eye and you are playing with fire by not washing things.
Read the post; OP is asking people if they wash the clothes they wear to the thrift store. I wash everything I buy at all thrift stores--sometimes I have to wash 3 x's to get out the industrial detergent smell.
Are you asking if I wash the clothes that I wear while thrifting right when I get home?
I didn’t know this was a thing
yeah im not sure if it is
I dont feel a thrift store is anymore germy or dirty than any other store. I do remove my clothes that I wore, at ANY stores when I get home, especially if I sat down anywhere. They go in a hamper for wash day.
It's never even occurred to me to change clothes when I come home from a thrift.
yes
Do you also wash your clothes after shopping at target?
I wear loose sweats w bike shorts underneath. Neutral tone tank, usually a white crop, w a Tshirt over. Slide sandals or flip flops, and I bring socks in my purse.
A lot of my thrifts don’t have changing rooms, I live in a large city w minimal police presence and theft is unbelievably common. So you have to try the clothes on in the isle. I must admit, the unwashed clothes on my skin grosses me out and I do shower once I get home, as well as wash my clothes. I definitely wash the clothes I purchase before wearing.
Just like I shower after a plane ride, using equipment at the gym, or taking our public transportation system. Idk about you all but I have seen some shit go down in all the settings I listed above. I’m not only trying to wash off other people’s filth, I’m trying to wash off any old energy as well!
thanks for the detailed reply!
This is the correct answer.
Ratty knock around jeans and t-shirts.
if you're short and have to manhandle some items to check value- do wash up, and wash your clothing. Stored items are often dusty, covered in rodent excrement and who knows what else.
i usually do try on clothes but dont do the showering part so i guess it's a bit counterproductive
Interesting does one dress differently going either thrifting, garage sale’n or estate sale’n? I honestly don’t care what I’m wearing either way but do take note sometimes if im accidentally in my office work clothes.
I don’t try on clothes while thrifting, I’m pretty good at guessing if things will fit, so I wear whatever.
Fitting rooms are usually gross, one time they were closed because someone took a crap in it.
If I make a bad guess on a $5 sweater its not a huge loss
ooh i wish i was like that
I'll try to wash immediately if I go to the bins and touch my clothing to the items. But that's because I'm worried about bedbugs. I don't worry that much about it in other stores.
you mean non-bin thrift stores? i just went to a version of the bins, but mostly home goods for the first time, but the bins you're prob talking about do seem really intriguing. i just hope when i go i pray i don't bring home bedbugs.
Clothes that I buy go into a plastic bag, and then into the chest freezer immediately. Clothes that I wear while thrifting, regardless if I try anything on, get taken off in the mud room and I shower right away. Those clothes get laundered before coming into the house.
It sounds extra, but it makes me feel better lol.
If anyone doesn't have a chest freezer, you can dry them first before washing. I read that washing can cause them to infest the machine.
No. I generally don’t try on the clothes I buy.
Thrifting rn, strappy gray tank top with high rise black leggings & sandals so I can try on clothes on top due to lack of fitting rooms 🙄
Something comfy, usually a polo shirt, loose fitting shorts and Birkenstocks.
Yes because I wear those one piece bodysuits cause they are easy to try stuff on top of. They got rid of the change rooms here.
Depends. I went to the bins store location for the first time. Yes, change. Bc I was gross. I did wipe myself down. If you are going to be digging in bins, wear a painter’s suit and gloves.
i haven't been to the official? bins yet but was planning to go because so tempting, but am afraid of getting bedbugs in the car etc. painter's suit (looked up) would totally help with this, but im too self conscious :(
Most of the time I toss them in the basket, we have to use a laundromat and once we get three loads we go do laundry. So they sit in the basket a while. A few of the thrift stores around here actually have industrial washers and dryers and they wash before putting it out on the floor. I’ve heard the buzzers going off and the whole clothing area smells like laundry soap. One time I bought a couple things and they smelled like patchouli well I love that smell but husband doesn’t had to wash those twice to get out the smell.
i've never noticed washers and dryers inside the thrift store but interesting!
For some reason when I go thrifting and I know I bought a shirt or something from that store I don’t like to wear it weird right
I usually wear pajamas, it’s comfortable. I don’t try the clothes on usually so I just wear whatever. I always change clothes after I get home though to avoid germs or anything.
I like to wear some of my finds 🤙🏼
i always wear rlly tight athleisure that i can try on clothes over bc it’s so easy to chuck it in the wash after
