Doing a rewatch and realize that I liked Gavin’s character. He wasn’t an evil dude. A little bad but he just fell in with the wrong crowd. He tried to keep his word.
No SpoilerConsidering that Maggie was a farmers daughter, i just felt she was perfect to fit in with the hilltop community. I really did like Gavin tho, but i still think he kind of fitted more in with the saviors, not because of their evil actions but because of their style and enviorement kinda. I would like to think if Gavin was the leader of the Saviors, the Saviors could actually lean more towards being the good guys and thus most likely there wouldnt be the conflict that was when Neegan was in charge. The only other community i could picture Gavin being a part of prior to Alexandria and Hilltop being upgraded with the blueprints and schematics that they got from that blonde "LP-music" woman, is Ocean-side. I think Gavin has this kind of vibe that easily would make him fit being a surfer, someone who barbeques at the beach or someone who is stranded on an island and is cracking coconuts with their machete. Haha maybe he just reminds me of someone that actually does one or more of the things i mentioned and thats why i think so 👍🌴🌴🌴🌊🌊🌊🌞😎
Yet he got an almost more brutal death than that piece of garbage Jared.
not really, jared was ripped apart slowly. if I recall, he was just stabbed through the throat which is much quicker
FUCK! So that's where Gavin went!
Gaviiiiiiiiin
Rdr2 reference huh
Finding that guy in the epilogue at the MacFarlane Ranch had me dying
He even appears in Tall Trees. How the Skinners haven't annihilated him is beyond me.
Loke seriously, they likely would have The Kingdom’s goodside for a bit longer if he got rid of him.
He is "I was just following orders" personified.
Wasn’t he sent to enslave the Kingdom? And in the end he chose to do it, even though he showed some possible regret for it
Yeah this is a crazy take. This guy was still one of the leaders of the saviors and very aware of everything going on. He doesn’t get a pass because he had a job easier than most of the leaders and less violent doing so. If you aren’t a solution, you’re a part of the problem all the same
Might be part of the problem but it’s easy to see if you’re choice is do what’s told or die, most people would fall in line. You guys are using the rules of our world. His alternative was getting a fucking iron to the face lmao
Rick offered him and the other saviors a pardon in 8x01
Did you forget that saviors were being executed by ricks group in secret ?
Which saviors? You mean season 9?
For real.
Tf is this delusional ass take?
Nah. His goon constantly stepped out of line and he did nothing. He SAID “I keep my word and play by the rules” but he didn’t. When Ben was killed he should’ve punished his man harsher than “walk home” … period.
He was NICER than Simon but he also sucked. He deserved to die as much as any savior.
I dont think he wanted anymore blood on his hands or anyone's and telling Jared to walk home was getting him out of the problem (or so he thought) but i think it was also meant to humble him
Fucking garbage take "period".
Nah
Dude was depressed as fuck and miserable at the shit he had to do. He had given up.
The apocalypse brought out the psychopath in lots of otherwise decent humans.
Nah, he was a different type of evil. Evil isn't a binary concept, it's a spectrum, and Gavin was on it.
I guarantee there were Nazi commanders in WW2 just like Gavin. Men following orders who didn't necessarily "like" it, but men who still committed atrocities nonetheless.
Gavin was a piece of shit. He was a different type of piece of shit than men like Simon or Negan, but he was still a piece of shit.
There's a good documentary called Ordinary Men that touch on this exact idea.
My major issue is the fact he kept bringing Jareds trash ass even though it was obvious he was the instigator, gives “my son would never!” Vibes
I always assumed that was his team selected for him by Negan and he didn't want to upset Negan by changing it/potentially pissing him off.
He reminds me of my manager at work, just really fed up and done with shit. Kinda forced to follow orders from a higher up manager but can't really speak out about it. Just done. I always liked Gavin and I wish he hadn't been killed.
He knew he had a sweet gig in the apocalypse and didn’t want it being messed up.
I think this sums it up best.
I always thought he was an interesting character, would have loved more from him. He wasn’t your typical moustache twirling villain like Simon, he had some more nuance to him
Met him. Great guy too. He Also felt his character had porentional for redemption
such a waste of a character imo, heaps of potential just for henry to poke him to death 😞
Gavin was the worst outpost leader of all of Negan's lieutenants. It was through is managerial incompetence that The Kingdom decided to go against the Saviors and join Alexandria. If he had been smart he would have had one of his men beat the ever loving snot out of Jared after he stepped out of line and attacked Ezekiel's man there would have been a very real chance that they would have sat the whole thing out.
The whole basis of their agreement was mutual protection. Gavin broke his agreement when he let Jared get away with attacking Richard, and then again when Jared shot Benjamin instead of Richard. He let shit get way out of hand and his incompetence and unwillingness to exact proper punishments got a kid killed and threw a war in favor of their enemies.
Gavin struck me as a middle management type. He wasn't inherently evil. When Rick's people showed up at the Sanctuary, he suggested they all take a step back and talk things over. But he was weak, and not controlling Jared was a big failing. Too late Jared was sent to another outpost. But Gavin could have established his authority by ending him. I think he expresses to Ezekiel that he's afraid of Negan and is just doing what he has to to stay alive. So I think he provides a variety among the villains, with some nuance. But he shows that Gavin's strategy was not a good one for survival in the end.
He really could have switched sides
yOu kNoW wHaT iT iS?
I was supposed to
When he saw the communities in front of the Sanctuary and whispered “Jesus Christ,” like seeing terror in the people of the ones in charge was awesome
That’s so funny, I just watched when he got killed today and had the same thought
It's weird the show didn't have him interact with Eugene considering how similar they are in their reasons for being Saviors
Yeah i am on Season 7 as well. And thats the same-thing i was thinking. This guy had some heart on him. He was truly sad on Benjamin’s death.
God this brings me back - this era was by far the worst era of TWD for me - none of these ‘side characters’ had any meaningful payoff and none of them could act. Anyway I didn’t care for this guy at all. Just another character added in to be killed later on
Bro would have made a great nazi, “just following orders”
Couldn’t agree more. You summed it up perfect. He was no Simon aka Trevor lol. Him along with many others just happened to come across the group that would eventually become the saviors before meeting a decent group like Rick’s
He fell in with some bad people, but he was never like them, not really.
He didn’t just “fall in” with the saviors he was one of the leaders. For one reason or another he knew some people and was trusted up there and that’s not free
Disagree.
What city was that behind him. Wondering if it’s Atlanta because I thought they were in Virginia
Washington DC
They should of kept Gavin
The hell is wrong with all of you?
This guy was a textbook reason we had Nuremberg trials , more so than Negan
Yeah, not a bad dude at heart. Pretty sure he was just survin' somehow
What? The dude is a piece of shit what are you talking about
He is what happens when a good man follows bad orders
If he had the choice to be apart of ricks group he'd probably be happy living with a lady and doing work with little responsibility
It’s hard to say what you would do in a zombie apocalypse because it’s an extreme case and one that no one has experienced obviously. Yeah he rose up the ranks of an evil organization but if you’re alone on the road and your choice is between continuing alone or joining a large group, survival can make you do bad things. He was a part of evil but if it wasn’t for the circumstances he probably would have been an alright person.
The actor they choose sure is a looker.
I feel the only reason Gavin did anything bad was because Negan would have punished him if he didn’t. It’s very clear that he never wanted to hurt anyone and just wanted business to be as civil as possible. Negan was just a really shitty boss.
Other than the Negan "select few"; most of the saviors weren't bad people. They were people just trying to survive and had to do what they were told or they would be dead - or worse, a loved one would be. And they weren't able to leave.
That's why I always hated it when Maggie, Daryl, etc.. overlooked the Ocean side women killing the saviors that joined the community. Yes, I know some of them were directly involved with the massacre of the oceanside men.... but again, do what you're told or we'll take care of you or your family.
Yeah I always thought he got too much hate
Agreed. Really wish he lived! Why'd darn ole Henry have to kill him :(
… because he did nothing when Henry’s brother got murdered.
Henry is such a L
Man was on his last leg, ready to kill himself. Then the Saviors found him, and Gavin thought he was joining a solid group. Only to realize he signed up with bad guys.
Bro nah. Fuck that guy. If he hadn’t sat there and continued to scream at The King and make him sit there and listen to it the entire time Benjamin may have lived. I think if he never met the saviors he could have been a good dude but I still hate the guy
Him being evil or not really depends on morality. If you're against Russia's invasion of Ukraine, or Israel's occupation of Palestine, do you consider the foot soldiers (the ones who don't gloat or do tiktoks or clearly enjoy the abuse of power) who just do their jobs (keep things in line in the west bank) complicit in the actions of someone evil?
Personally, I do, and that's why I consider Gavin evil. Additionally, he did order Jared to kill that kingdom guy due to a missing watermelon or whatever. Which is likely him following the rules to protect his own backside, but that makes him complicit.
Always found his acting style kind of bland. He feels like a character from another show.
I think the character was supposed to be bland. Someone who is broken just trying to keep things in line, whilst being unbothered
2My god I can't stand this guy.
Has anyone ever cheated on their partner that many times in one season and then shown negative remorse.
I genuinely don't see what all these women see in him either man must be packing because he's just so meh otherwise.
Everyone just kind of laughing at or shrugging it off too is infuriating. Someone please call this guy out.
I'm not trying to personally attack the guy or but just his blatant disrespect for women in general irks me so much.
Maybe he really is a vampire cause damn he sucks. Nope nope
I'm curious now.
It was about mtvs the challenge!
Lmaoo oops
Dont know why you're being downvoted. This should be the top post on this sub ever.
Probably the most underrated C/D-Character of the whole show. I wish he would have lived so we could see more of him
I think if he wouldn’t have been with the saviors he would’ve been a good leader of Hilltop and then I would’ve had Maggie with Carol at the Kingdom
