The 90s Favorite Media Player 'Winamp' is Going Open-Source!
SoftwareBring back Winamp skins!!
I want Winamp visualizations back
I just immediately flashed back to getting stoned alone in my dorm room and watching them!!
Wow, talk about a blast from the past… yes, let’s bring back these and screensavers!
3D Maze set to all psychedelic rainbow textures.
I drank so much cough syrup watching those things.
Whoa laying on a hammock listening to the clash Ghetto Defendant high on robitussin. “Do the worm on Acropolis, slamdance Cosmopolis, enlighten the populace, om”
Ah the early 90’s. Good times.
Was it Geiss? That rings a bell..
Yep, Ryan Geiss went on to make Milkdrop. 22 years ago? Nonsense! https://www.geisswerks.com/milkdrop/
Oh man.. that brings back memories, 2001 was ten years ago.. right..? Right..?
Still using them and Winamp 5.666 in Win 11 Pro. Winamp never went away.
Exactly. Those of us "old school" music fans who prefer thousands of mp3s instead of streaming subscriptions know that Winamp is the best place to catalog your collection, and create playlists.
That's what I was going to say. I downloaded the latest version of Winamp a few months ago and visualizations work great. All my favorites are there (Speeder3k and 3D maze are my favorites)
Milk drop was the best
Milkdrop baby
Milkdrop2 was such a banger collection, it really whipped some llama ass.
It really whips the llamas' ass
Whips, not kicks
i still have my skins, waiting for this moment in time
so cool! i see some old favorites in that list
I had the BEST The Fast and the Furious Winamp skin.
Here they are: https://skins.webamp.org/
they work with VLC last I checked.
It will whip the Llama’s ass even better! I can finally zone out with Milkdrop visuals once more!
It really whips the llama’s ass
Now, we could look at the code, and see exactly how it whips the llama’s ass.
First it whips it. Then, it whips it good.
Crack that whip!
Licorice whip!
Devo: Whip It !
And then there's some AOL bloat, but still whips the llama.
if (llamas_ass) { whip(); }
This is the only reason I came here.
Winamp, Winamp, Winamp
*Bleating "Mehhhhh"*
So, a question that I have literally been thinking about for the last quarter century or so so nve I first use winamp...
Is the Llamas ass in this a reference to something (like a competitor or something) or is it just a funny phrase?
It's a Wesley Willis reference I'm pretty sure, a star musician of the era.
He was a force for chaos. He gave me a headbut in 1997 and I only stopped seeing stars twenty minutes ago.
I saw Wesley Willis on his last tour just before the cancer took him. I was in the front row singing and moving along to all the songs I knew, I even tried to start a pit.
When I went to have him sign my greatest hits CD, he grabbed my head, looked me straight in the eyes and said say ROOOAAAR! So I grabbed him by the head back and yelled ROOOOAAAARR! right back in his face. He got the biggest grin, and headbutted me. But I didn't let go and now I was the one with the biggest grin on my face, he said say RUUUU-AARGH! So I yelled RUUUU-AAARGH! as loud as I could back, and he headbutted me again, then he said, say RAWR-OOOORG! And so I yelled RAAWR-OOOOOORG! back and got my third headbutt of the night.
I'm glad I got to see him before he passed, when the news came out like a year or 2 later I was blown away.
A guy I used to work with had a copy of 100 Deadliest Karate moves that he used as a signature book. He of course got Wesley Willis to sign the headbutt page.
I thought I heard somewhere it started as an inside joke with the devs but that could be an old rumor.
Edit: Apparently it comes from a Wesley Willis song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JntDcqOxMsM&t=21s
the fact you had to worry about posting a link to something is stupid. just goes to show how pathetic and power hungry mods are lmao
Im a bit confused because this press release is from last December but I've seen this 'update' all over the web TODAY and never once before. Did someone come across this old press release and decided to push it around?
From the article:
In any case, we'll see what happens in September. If you are interested in learning more about this move, you can refer to the announcement blog, which weirdly has December 16 as its publishing date; Maybe this was supposed to be announced earlier?
I'm skeptical. Here's why:
- The press release does not use the term "open source" anywhere. They mention the "application's source code will be open to developers worldwide" but what will the license be? That's a VERY important detail they've conveniently left out.
- The press release continues by saying "Winamp will remain the owner of the software and will decide on the innovations made in the official version" - This is hardly the attitude of true FOSS.
- The current owner's added NFT's to Winamp , and have been trying to sell the NFT concept to creators for years.
I used Winamp for literally decades. Loved it. Still do. Winamp 2.91 remains, in my mind, the greatest music player of all time.
But until they actually release the source code under a proper FOSS license, and truly accept contributions from the community, I'll continue with one of the other multi-platform FOSS alternatives (my personal fave being Audacious but there's plenty of others).
I'm glad you pointed out version 2.91. I remember the later versions being pretty lousy.
Bring that one back and let me relive my high school and college days.
what.....year is this?
Give me your ICQ and MSN username and I’ll tell ya.
I wish I could find my six digit ICQ number again. I would totally use it again.
i still remember my # off by heart, thats hilarious
uh-oh!
Or if you haven’t been online in a while…
uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh! uh-oh!
a/s/l?
Ah, the Wild West of yahoo pool
lol, remember the Yahoo "Fight Rooms" voice chats?
Funny enough, there's very little difference compared to the many random Discord channels of today.
Good ol' AOL chatrooms!
It's on my livejournal. You can find it there.
ICQ: 107767
Oh one of the originals.
Yep. It's funny that it's going on, dammit, almost 30 years and I still remember that number. That was actually my second one, because I wasn't paying attention and I lost my first one. Good times. It was a great tool in the 90s. Though I was the network administrator for the company, and let me tell you how easy it was for us to read everybody's messages. Oh the days before anybody secured anything.
Oh i believe you haha. I remember mine as well. 252663312. created the account in… probably 2004,05.
You can't simply plug in a packet sniffer on a network and read the payload these days. It's all encrypted now.
I know my ICQ number, no idea about the password though.
I only have AIM
I know my ICQ number but not the password. Still have access to my first MSN account. Was pissed when I noticed MS deleted all my emails from before 2019. I had records of like 25 years of my life on there.
252-663-312
Time to resurrect my Geopage website
Can I give my Escargot username instead? At least that works unlike MSN names!
Just before the cordyceps take over
Can’t wait to let my MySpace friends know about this!
A better one. Nature is healing.
My Kali95 number if 121776 if you want to drop for some Mech2.
Oh man, that hits right in the nostalgias.
Yeah... I stopped using that years ago when I realized how much of a resource hog it was... switched over to VLC Player.
... also I guess I kinda stopped listening to MP3s on my computer...
I just want the visualizer to make a comeback
Winamp visualisations have never gone away. I don't know where you got the impression they were removed.
Meaning in other programs or standalone. Nearly every music app is missing that feature. Further elaboration: milkdrop code and visualization is out there in the wild but none of them are simple to use and have become more like a Max plugin instead of something that just runs with your audio..
it’s because people listen to music in the background while doing sometning else on their phone or PC
the people who want to or enjoy spending time looking at visuals is a small, small minority
I have visualisations on as something for my PC to show when I'm just listening to music. For example the laptop that i use to run my hi-fi has the visualisations on just as something interesting to show. I'm sure I'm in a minority but it seemed more logical to spend £25 on an old laptop than it did on a visualiser, HDD based media player and CD player all of which were more than £25.
The visualizations were for running in the background on your monitor during dorm room parties.
Yeah but that small minority is really excited
Not that small. They're at least average. They even look a bit above average to me. Most people prefer that size, or so I'm told. Any bigger would be too big really.
Lol, Milkdrop in Winamp is literally my desktop wallpaper. Don't even need music for it to run.
Apple's Music has visualizers, and before that iTunes did.
It never left, I just have it hooked into Foobar2k intead of winamp. Look up Milkdrop.
I hope someone can port it to MacOS. Sometimes I just want a simple music player instead of the bloat of Apple Music. There are others available but I always liked Winamp.
There's always this - a friend of mine made it: https://webamp.org/
That… That is very cool!
That’s surprisingly tidy.
Oh this is sick
Foobar2000 works pretty well on my aging mac
Foobar2000 100% the answer to anyone wanting a simple music player. Simple if you want it to be, tons of customization and plugins if you want to tweak it.
Mac lacks a really good music player for a huge collection of music files. I have a ton of FLAC and high-bitrate mp3 files, all sorted by artist and album. I used MusicBee on Windows and loved it, but now I'm primarily Mac and it seems no one has created a good alternative. Shame, really, as I love my Macs.
My music collection used to choke iTunes so I moved to Roon almost a decade ago and it’s been terrific. Wasn’t cheap and it’s gone up a lot since I got in, but I love it. I run it on a m2 mini to multiple endpoints. Also allows me to stream my music library in my car, work, etc.
Looks nice, but way too expensive and subscription-based for the most part. I'm willing to pay, but not that much and not every month.
IINA is good one if you're on macOS.
That is what I often use. My biggest complaint is that there are no equalizer presets and it doesn't remember the settings after quitting so you have to set it again every time.
Many memories using Winamp 20yrs ago with all those crazy visualizations.
Q. Why was there never a WinAmp 4?
A. No one wanted to see a WimAmp 4 Skin.
Worst joke of the day. I love it!
Fun fact: that joke is at least 19 years old, probably older.
Somebody fork it as Linamp.
Came here to suggest this!
Next up is WinRAR.
Just use 7zip.
That Russian commie crap?
Russia hasn't been communist for at least 25 years, clearly you've somehow missed this, I don't know how, but the USSR doesn't exist anymore.
In addition to this you do realise free, open source software fits the definition of Communism? It's of the people, by the people, for the people, it's distributed at no cost and there's no price to pay.
If you don't want "commie crap" then do the decent, capitalist, thing and pay for everything, you've got to spend and be proud it's the capitalist way. Don't use free, open source software and don't pirate software either as that's really very anti-capitalist.
Almost everything that can decompress 7-zip files is using the same libraries that 7-zip does.
It's open source, you can check the code yourself (you can even ask ChatGPT to explain it to you in case you don't understand it).
It being made by a Russian doesn't magically make it malware, that's such a ridiculous logic
Tetris is a psyop.
It really zips the llama's ass.
(sigh) (unzips)
I don’t think it will happen, but rar is pretty outdated anyway.
You mean PeaZIP ?
But then they'd loose all that revenue from people who pay for it
Has anyone payed for this yet?
I saw a video where someone bought a license to see if it would work with a really old version.. so, there’s at least one sale!
This is probably gonna make WACUP's job way easier, hope an android port is on the way
Mac when?
Hmm Apple CarPlay interface would rock
This is good news. I have used Winamp for many years and it's in need of stone QoL improvements, i have it on all my computers.
check out WACUP, it's in beta but it's already better than the ancient winamp 5
In what way? I've had zero issues with Winamp so I'd need a good reason to move on. I'm happy using the current version of Winamp until the FOSS version is released with enough improvements for me to consider it.
Bring back milkdrop!
It never went away.
It's available as a plugin for Apple Music and probably others.
Anyone else remember the video channels prebuilt-in? They had movies and tv just streaming non-stop on a loop, it was magical at the time. Basically watched all of Neon Genesis Evangelion this way lol.
Its suddenly 1998 and I'm playing fallout 2, listening to winamp and downloading more music from Napster.
In the early 2000s i downloaded half a terabyte of music with the thought that the classic stuff never goes out of style. iTunes cannot handle that volume of music, winamp can, winamp forever!!
Can I still play SOMAFM on it? Yes, good, that's all I needed to know.
It's not going open source.... https://www.zdnet.com/home-and-office/home-entertainment/winamp-is-not-going-open-source-heres-what-it-is-doing-and-why/
That really kicks the llamas ass.
I was a beta tester for Winamp at the time I was friends with devs Justin frankel and the original author who wrote it for Mac OS D’mitry kunayiv*. The backstory on the slogan. “ Winamp really whips a llamas ass” is a lighthearted joke about one of the other beta testers who at the time was my roommate was from Kazakhstan and his family owned llamas and him and Dimitri were close friends.
It really whips the llama’s ass!
That poor Llama’s ass.
Holup, gotta fire up my P2 300mhz Windows 98 machine and re-install AIM and ICQ.
This is the best news I’ve heard all month
...And many llamas' asses were whipped that day.
It really whils the lamas ass.. or something if recall
Need a live chat function. Any media players have one? Like old school p2p applications did?
Sonique enters the chat.
I still use Winamp!
iTunes is so bloated… I don’t know what other people use.
Written in C++ I would imagine (hopefully). Would be cool if someone took it and updated it to a newer version of C++, because early 90s C++ is rough by today’s standards.
Also a decent chance it was written in C.
Today's favorite media player is already open source. Long live to VLC.
Oh my old friend! I actually paid because i loved it
winamp rocked, but I no longer have any mp3s so....
Yeah. I was thinking if there was some sort of Spotify streaming plug in, I'd use it just to have the Winamp ui and visualizer on my screen again.
This is what I expect. Would love to use Winamp for my local media, FLACs. Even better if I can use a plugin of a Spotify and mix with local music or have multiple queue like AIMP. Even more better if Casting it's added.
I thought it was open source. TIL.
I had no idea it was still around! This is like seeing a headline saying “LYCOS challenges Google”
Spotify is sleeping on Winamp
TIL Winamp has a CEO
I didn't know Winamp was still around
yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas
The llama is coming back!
Milkdrop Visualizer 😁😁😁
Matrix metal dream red gets a 2nd chance!
TIL Winamp wasn’t open source
Remind me in 1 month
I wish Winamp had plug ins for things like Spotify or iBroadcast.
I want to listen to my music through Winamp.
This really whips the llama's ass!
Winamp kicks the llamas ass
Ive always wanted Winamp features from Spotify.
another article says its not going open source though.............
Well if that doesn’t kick the lamas ass I don’t know what will
OH YEAH BBY!
Now thats what im talking about! The best software from the 90's are ours forever!
Seems to come about 20 years too late, but here's hoping it'll see meaningful activity, after so many years of well-intentioned empty promises. I still use WinAmp for all my audio files...
Laughs in VLC
Who uses Winamp when MusicBee exists?
Wait…yall were paying for this?
Open source from closed source.
Stand by for WinAImp, exactly same features but now AI. Revolutionary
Winamp is now forever!
