My favourite pattern in series 14

Is how John consistently brings the worst imaginable item in the prize task, or so you'd think. Then somehow Munya tops it with an even worse item.

In episode 4, John brought a plant (a potential part of a maze) and Munya got a "reincarnation of a black bird."

In episode 7, John brought a sailor's hat then Munya lost because he brought a coordination toy (for a car ride).

In episode 9, John brought a penny and was laughed to the ground, then somehow Munya lost to him because he brought a pair of rocks.

The sailor hat was great, though. John was absolutely accurate about how delightful it would be to pull up alongside a car and see its driver in a sailor hat.

We say this, the episode I went to see recorded saw Kearns got 5 points in the prize task for the magnificently terrible prize of a Subbuteo streaker. Made double ridiculous by the fact he doesn't even have Subbuteo

Smooth Rupert was robbed. I would rather have John's sailor's hat than most of that week's prizes. The coordination game is a safety hazard if you're driving and Munya said it's for when you're driving the car.

I like lots of these prize tasks, but the one that stands out for me and always will is the Pinocchioooooow. I rewatch this bit occasionally and laugh like a madman.

Some seasons have a whole group where all of them are just.. painfully awful at the prize tasks. Season 10, I think, was the worst. Like, every single one was just shit, and Greg doesn't hide his disdain for it. But that was right mid-Covid and I got the vibe the mental/emotional state of everyone, contestants and Greg and Alex, was off.

Well, all except one. Mawaan is tied with Desiree for the all-time highest prize task score, though Lolly has the best average score since she was in a shorter series

It's always "nothing could be worse than this", and then the next contestant is (subjectively) worse and Greg says "You're back in the game!". Since John was the "pity" awful contestant it is extra funny to make someone else seem even worse, so they order it like that, and Greg is in on it.

This has been a thing for a few seasons, but I do wish people would actually try in the prize tasks. I can't remember who was the first contestant to submit stupid/low effort things for a laugh (Hugh Dennis popped into my head?), and it's still sometimes very funny, but mostly its just gotten old to me

It’s not that they don’t try, half the time it’s that their original idea isn’t allowed and they have to scramble last minute for a replacement, and other half they completely misunderstood what they’re supposed to bring.

There have always been weak prize attempts.

For the series 1 "Most Valuable Item," Rosin brought in a $12 fake diamond ring, and Tim brought copies of his book.

Also Hugh genuinely tried for the prize tasks, Greg just hated every item he brought in. I particularly liked his wool hat. And yes Greg, it does get cold in Kenya.

It often felt to me like he was lagging. The iconic John moments when he would pause for a long time or do something silly like empty a bin then fill it again😂

If I’m not mistaken he and Fern have the third highest average score for a loser after Lolly and Alice, although John won more tasks and episodes so I would consider him to be more successful than Fern. Also he’s the only loser who doesn’t lose the series when either objective or subjective tasks are isolated (Fern did the worst in objective tasks, and Munya the worst in subjective)

Munya’s foot scraper might be the most aggressively awful gift (NOT gifts!) on that series and is worse than anything John could conceivably have brought in. I appreciated John’s salesmanship.

Also Smooth Rupert is awesome.
