BASS - Big Ass Speaker Setups. Who else feels the need to go half dead every time they play?! I do!
Tinnitus sucks and its one of those things ppl that don't have it, can't understand but the best way I can put it is when things are quite my tinnitus is deafening and it never goes away just some days are better then others and you learn to live with it, but it was hard to get over the fact it's here for the rest of my life, squealing in my ear till the day I die.
God I wish I had worn ear plugs when I went clubbing during my early 20s
I studied sound engineering for a year when I was 19 and one of the teachers recommended we all get special musician's earplugs and even arranged for a group price and moment for us all to get the moulds made at the same time. Can't thank him enough for that.
Very wise teacher. I am kinda used to my tinnitus by now and I can live with it but there's times where I wish I could have some real quiet time. Sometimes it can get overwhelming
that was an incredibly cool thing of him to do
Don't get me wrong, I love my life and am 100% not suicidal. But I'll put it this way, the day I die is when I'll finally get some literal peace and quiet. Sometimes I can ignore the tinnitus, but it never goes away. Tinnitus does suck.
Yeah I found it really distressing when it came in, like I was unable to take my focus from that dead air noise on my left side. I find it especially bad when I've just woken up for whatever reason. I was an artilleryman and the side that faced the gun is just trashed.
Agreed people without it, can't and won't understand. I have it too, thankfully mild, but with a lot of frequent, transient loud tinnituses (SBUTTS). The thing that plagues my existence though is MEM, which is spontaneous muscle spasm episodes inside the ear. It's also one of the things that you DON'T want.
Listen to this advice. I was careless and I have severe hearing damage now, list several chunks of mids and high frequency and have continuous tinitus.
I haven't heard silence in over 15 years. I can't hear things over the ringing. I can't mix music properly because of the damage.
That's a crazy amount for a bass shaker, but yet the are awesome.
Was going to say the same. Permanent tinnitus suuuuuuuiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Don’t do that to yourself.
As a dude who DJed at clubs for years and was constantly cranking the monitors and running my headphones at max I implore you to have some sense and not do this unless you just wanna listen to the longest most exhausting ring all day every day forever and never experience silence again
One fucked filter peak away from tinnitus for life
Who does? Idiots that don’t understand they might be ruining their musical lives. There’s a comfort level and then there’s a “hype level” that you can go into for very little time before you start jeopardizing your hearing. Ask any rock musician and they’ll tell you it’s not worth it.
As someone who plays in the basement with headphones on after the wife and kids are in bed sleeping... Not me
Last fall I became 80% deaf in one ear. Be careful out there people. Don't take your ears for granted.
What happened?
It's called Sudden Sensorineural Hearing loss. Went to sleep one night, woke up deaf in one ear. No real medical explanation so might not be associated with loud noise. But I was gigging regularly at the time and wasn't really looking out for my hearing.
Wow that’s terrible I’m sorry
You know it was terrible but like everything else you adapt. I've gotten used to it. Just mix down my in ear to mono lol.
Look into decibel therapeutics / frequency therapeutics. I don’t know the details but I’ve heard they’re researching regenerative hearing treatments
Yeah I'm fairly optimistic there will be treatments in the next 5-10 years.
Buy this. It’s life changing. It’s impossible to overstate how cool these are. It’s makes your feel like you’re playing in a stadium
What is it
It’s a tactile thone for drummers (which I am) essentially it’s a subwoofer inside a chair. I run my synth through it, and play while my kids are asleep. It rattles your fucking skull in the best possible way. It makes it “feel” like you’re playing through a million dollar PA .
Dope I’ll look into one thank you
Again it’s really impossible to describe how fucking cool it is. Check out reviews and YouTube and shit. I have no stake in the company or anything, just a huge fan of this product
WHAAAT DID YOU SAAAAY???
Hey man can’t be a muso with hearing damage. Look after yourself homie
Oh dear…this is so wrong in so many ways that can’t even bother with details 😂
Why? I have the left and right speaker thrus running into a 2x-1x 3/4 adaptor into the centre speaker.
Permanent hearing damage maybe? And also speaker placement, but that’s not the priority here. Look out for yourself. You don’t want to f’up you ears, once they are done nothing u can do about it and yes tinnitus… “Tinnitus causes emotional stress that can be extreme, bringing on anxiety, depression, or sleep disorders.” “We found increased likelihood of attempted suicide among patients with tinnitus.” Just for saying….
You guys are a bit dramatic. I have a 2500 watt 18" speaker for our basement jams. Just because it's there, doesn't mean I'm cranking it to 11. But it gives you the ability to feel notes down in the sub region that you can't get with smaller subs. I still like to play a little loud sometimes, I'm definitely not entering that danger zone. Big speakers give big bass. That's all.
Subs give big bass mate, not bigger speakers. You need a right speaker+sub setup, good placement, room treatment ect. Nothing to do with “bigger” speakers…
You sound like someone who doesn't have to deal with the fact that they will hear EEEEEEEEE every moment it's quiet until they die.
not people who want to still hear at 30
sometimes you gotta, if you can. but just to test. don't sit in from of that all the time 🦻🏻
Watch a movie “Sound of Metal”
You’ll go deaf and no music anymore
Actual great tip!
You are going to LOVE your tinnitus. There is nothing quite like non-stop ringing in the ears to make you feel alive.
I like loud music, but not that loud; at 40 I find club / public outdoor event music way too loud. I'd much rather have accurate sound with a good subwoofer, over wall shattering bass.
But what if it doesn’t sound good unless it’s so loud you can’t really hear it?
Unfortunately young people do not understand that our hearing is based on delicate sensor hair cells in inner ear, and the hearing is like car dampers - every time You ride a bump, it get's worse, never be the same again.
People are different, genetic heritage gives one more or less sensitive ears, but 140 dB is the instant killer for everyone's hair cells. .
If You ears are sensitive, even simple exposition to 130+ dB noise can cause instant, PERMANENT hearing damage - it can be done even blowing the balloon until it pops or popping it with needle in smaller room with bare walls by interference (how many children did this and how many times!) . Firing a gun without proper protection - ONCE- makes Your hearing worse instantly, just You may not notice - brain tries to do it's best to compensate these loss sensoric cells, but in time it can not be cheated, "remapped" as the dead/hot pixels in camera.
That's what happened to Bruce Willis;
The same goes for much lower noise, but when Your ears are exposed during longer time - if the cells are not given enough time to regenerate, they die.
Several websites on the the work safety gives similar numbers about
Maximum Recommended Daily Noise Dose Exposure Levels
Noise Level (dBA) / Maximum Exposure Time per 24 Hours
85 / 8 hours
88 / 4 hours
91 / 2 hours
94 / 1 hour
97 / 30 minutes
100 / 15 minutes
103 / 7.5 minutes
106 / 3.7 minutes
109 / 112 seconds
112 / 56 seconds
115 / 28 seconds
118 / 14 seconds
121 / 7 seconds
124 / 3 seconds
127 / 1 second
130–140 / less than 1 second
140+ INSTANT HEARING DAMAGE
So even not covering Your ears when fire truck passes by with 130dB siren can be cause of acoustic trauma and partial but PERMANENT loss in less than 1 second time.
And If You are flying without ear plugs 8 hours in plane with 85 dB noise it is enough to hear the plane engine outside when disembarking for some of the hair cells to say "goodbye".
You hit a hole with one wheel, the shock absorber on that side is no longer 98%, only 96% efficient, another good hole, another loss, when there is a enough-big-hole in the road, you immediately have a wheel and a shock absorber that needs to be replaced.
Scientist at MIT are working on method of forcing hair cells to regenerate, but it's not likely that everyone can get a chance before it's too late (as deaf You can probably loose interest in music :P).
https://news.mit.edu/2022/frequency-therapeutics-hearing-regeneration-0329
So If You are "audiophile" the investment in noise level meter, earplugs and noise canceling in-ear monitors (IEMs) is something to consider, as Your hearing can be as well in danger due to antibiotics, ear infections and ear infarction (the common cause of "yesterday I was OK but today I woke up one ear deaf" case) ...
https://balanceanddizziness.org/disorders/vestibular-disorders/labyrinthine-infarction/#:\~:text=Labyrinthine%20infarction%20is%20usually%20caused,clotting%20or%20thickens%20the%20blood.
You feel half dead inside when you play? That’s not a good sign. Playing music should make you feel alive, not half dead.
Your neighbors must love you.
May I ask what style of music you are playin?
Deaf-tones
😁
Ha. I remember those days of bigger is better. When I had more space, I used a 15” and 2x10” for my synth. I set up a pitch bend to an expression pedal and would drop down into that sub range below human hearing levels. I called that preset Jurassic Parking.
I prefer my studio monitors for synths so I can actually mix the bass
Let's hear it then...
My mom used to warn me by saying the hyperbolic "you're gonna go deaf!". I rolled my eyes of course. It took my bandmate getting tinnitus and then seeing how it affected him to get me wearing earplugs regularly. I wish I had my whole life.
Sure because that's what your tinnitus tells ya: even more volume.
And you think that those things "sound good" at 2 meters straight in front of your face? You think you can move enough air to make the speakers work well? I bet that my 8" active speakers go lower than those and they still are sharp and don't make me deaf or dismantle my windows.
Nice Di! I have a Gi and I love it. Been gigging with it for like 11 years? Still going strong!
Yeah man. Some people talk shit about it but it’ll always be one of my go-tos. The chord/arp function alone makes it worthwhile. The filter could be a little better but eveythyelse makes up for it.
Screw these other comments. You don't want to have to hear your grandkids talking to you when you are older. They come over you can just take your hearing aids out and have a nice peaceful nap in your chair.
I have a pair of K10s and a 10” sub for my setup.
The dog hates it.
I bought a JL Audio Fathom F112 Powered Subwoofer for my studio 12 years ago. Best investment ever. My moog Voyager loves it. The dishes in the china cabinets not so much.
Your neighbors love you
Actually just did that this week to tweak my live sound. Didn’t have it at show volume obviously but it helped me eq things better. Also helped me get a better mono sound. Like others mentioned I definitely would not recommend that for normal use.
Got my pair of K12s in the tiny ass living room. Stuff falls off shelves lmao
I never went to a rock concert, never played loud music, never used headphones for music, still developed tinnitus. Meds will do it to you, so don’t blame it all on your undisciplined childhood.
bet your neighbours really like you…. not.
2 x 15" monitors and a 18" sub.
I don't play it loud very often but it is nice to know I can...
I prefer being able to hear when I'm 70, hopefully still making music when I'm 70.
I go for quality over quantity. However I do have subs with my monitors that can rattle window if I want to have fun.
I feel sorry for the cat. Show some compassion and humility and reconsider this
My back hurts looking at this setup and having to reach over that far and low, especially at a low table that my legs can’t go over. At least bending over so far puts my head closer to that PA speaker.
Unless you play w a band twith a heavy drummer or a guitar player who wanks about without dynamics and are forced to “carve” a place for yourself in the mix i would sell those and size down focusing on tone.
Uncool
Stupid
But then again, some people stare at the sun and go blind. I guess low IQs do exist.
Caution with your hearing! Low frequencies can travel up your BONES and give you hearing problems too
Do the neighbours enjoy your music?
Doubt it
You gotta be looking like the Maxell cassette guy in the chair during every session with that speaker going. It’s the only way to jam.
Too small. There need to be at least 18" speaker(s) in system 😅
I do too. For me, when a synth wake up, it should propel my head in uranus .
Hahahaha earplug community 😂
My obligatory comment…
A word of advice / warning
My tinitus says:
IF you want to actually FEEL the sound, better get a "Buttkicker" kind of amp device!
...your ears will be thankful twentyfive years from now!
