Why are church bells ringing for so long tonight?

I'm visiting from the US. Church bells have been ringing almost non-stop since around 6:00 pm. Does anyone know why?

Need suggestions for a Monday night out in the city this month. It's been a while for us both.

I'm (M38) looking for ideas to take my girlfriend (F40) out to dinner and maybe a bit of dancing or music on a Monday night this month in the city. It's to celebrate her 40th birthday, and it will be our first night out alone for a long long time. We've been together for a couple of years but we don't see each other very often. And we don't get into the CBD very often at all. So this is a rare night out for us. We don't live together. She has two young boys and has sitter for the night. So it's a rare break out for her. Whereas I'm not in Sydney often enough. We'll be coming in from way out in the western suburbs by train and probably need to be back by midnight so get a train back around 11pm I guess.

She loves the city. We both do. Particularly the old history of Sydney. So my first thought was around the harbour or the rocks. Anything where there's maybe a bit of a view or some element of the city's history. But of course it'll be really cold so it has to be out of the wind. She doesn't drink much, but a bit. She might enjoy some music like jazz. She might even enjoy a little bit of dancing. I was thinking of drinks first and then a place to dinner. Or maybe it's better the other way around. It just can't be too far from the station because it's too cold to walk far. Unfortunately we're not staying overnight. But we really have no specific ideas. Just picking places from maps, doesn't seem very encouraging without advice.

So I'm hoping some people on this sub can make a few suggestions. What would you do? What would have been your idea of, or experience of a good night for a couple out in the cbd on a cold winter's night, just for the two of you? I'd really welcome any thoughts and suggestions and I think your sharing of ideas might help other people on this sub and give them some ideas too.

Cafes in Sydney playing the euros?

I start work early and normally have an hour to kill in a cafe around 5am. Currently going to EAT ME espresso bar in Alexandria which opens for the 5am match. It’s ok. The chairs are a little uncomfey. I’ve also been to the Bakehouse in Drummoyne but their screen was super pixelated and basically unwatchable.

Does anyone know of any others?

Friendly casual sports leagues?

I'm wanting to join a casual sports league to get fit, make friends and have fun but I also have 0 athletic skills! I've been looking at ladies/mixed netball as I used to play years ago but also open to any sports that are beginner-friendly. Ideally I'd like to play around Western Sydney with other late 20s/early 30s people.

Previous threads have led me to Urban Rec, Just Play and Netball4All. Unfortunately a lot of comps seem to be closer to the city which is tricky for me. I'm leaning towards Netball4All as they play in Auburn.

If anyone has recs for any specific sports or competitions, I'd love to hear them!

Good CBD pubs and bars 2024 edition

I've lived away for a few years but visiting soon. I've got my old favourite bars and pubs, at least the ones that still exist, but feeling like I'm probably out of the loop a bit. So what do people think are the best places to drink in the CBD in 2024?

I'm personally looking for CBD and Surry Hills only - so excluding Pyrmont, North Sydney, Kings Cross. But if you have any great suggestions throw them in anyway.

Categories - craft beer, wine or cocktail bars, speakeasies, old style pubs, good vibes, karaoke or other activities. Not interested in nightclubs.

How much has the Sydney rail lines changed since you can remember?

Basically the title, how much as the train lines changed for you in the past 10,20,30 years or however long since you can remember?

Forklift licence

Botanica, Lidcombe (former Lidcombe Hospital)

Saw a place in this development called “Botanica”, east of the A6 and west of Rookwood, and south of Lidcombe. It looks amazing for a new area, close to a golf course, quiet and leafy but with a major road nearby that gets you places. So other than trains being a bit far, I’m not sure why it’s so much cheaper than similar looking houses just a couple of km to the east in southern Strathfield or Enfield? Does anyone know anything about this area? First hand experience would be ideal!

Gas meter not recording.

Moved to a new place 6 months ago, my last 2 gas bills have "0 MJ" showing for my usage, even though I have used the gas stove to cook on. I'm not sure if my hot water is gas or electric, is there an easy way to tell?

The bill says "This bill is based on an actual reading" though, and the charge is just over $70 a quarter (connection fee). Does this just mean the gas meter is broken? I went looking around the building but have no idea where the gas meter is, assuming it's behind a locked door somewhere.

My question is, if I call up the gas company and tell them, are they going to charge me for the last 6 months, and if so how would they know how much to charge me?

Also, in terms of legalities, is it the responsibility to fix this mine or the gas company to know about this and fix this?
