Eco-brutalism: when angular concrete meets the wonder of nature – in pictures
Photo / InspoA couple vines and saplings doesn't make it "eco". The creation of concrete is one of the biggest sources of carbon
I thought the intent behind ecobrustalism was adding plants (and I've seen some depictions also include things like solar, rooftop gardens, etc) to brutalist buildings that already exist, not building new ones/using new concrete
That's a terrible idea. Plants can root and form cracks at worst at damage the surface at best
you could at least plop down some flower boxes and properly maintain the gardens and green spaces a lot of these buildings were supposed to have but weren't maintained.
Usually retrofitting isn’t a slap-dash affair. Nobody is going to go plant trees on brutalist buildings recklessly.
You’re correct that the idea you had when you learned about ecobrutalism is a bad one, but that doesn’t mean everyone else is having that same idea.

I love the aesthetic! I honestly hate brutalism but the plants give it a whole new feeling. Yes concrete isn't echo friendly right now but there are still some types of concrete(Roman concrete for one) that are much friendlier, albeit expensive. This would be a great way to revitalize older brutalist buildings and give them new life. Using what you have is always the best for the planet!
Bandaid on planet of the apes precurser
I'm a sucker for brutalism and while concreate isn't that environmentally friendly it is probadly going to be a very important material in the rapid densification of our urban areas to allow the rewilding of the rest of the planet.
Came here for the "Concrete production uses too much energy" comments.
I really expect more imagination from this sub. No technology is inherently "bad", but the choices me make around it often are. Concrete can be created with a solar furnace. Blockchain doesn't have to mean energy-sucking crypto mines. The entire point of solarpunk is to be more innovative and creative and not get suck in old thinking.
