Has anyone tried making and giving out reusable grocery bags from derelict clothings to promote moving away from plastic bags to other people? I was looking at drawstring bags, and wondered if old t shirts or something can be made into zero waste grocery bags, but I don't know how a t shirt can be modified into a close-able bag, or where all those ropes could be sourced in upcycle manner.
I have a suspicion that working within your city to ban plastic bags might go further here.
We had a bag ban that got repealed (yeah, you read that right...) and I rarely see people with reusables these days even though they obviously have them given that for like 2 years they were using them.
Edit: No reason you can't do both things though, they work together!
That's another way and would be great for both to be put into action. In my personal experience making life changes or any big changes has higher success rate when a clear and specific alternative is available to go to, instead of a uncertain blank "...what now?", and hope each time a person faces that thought-process, they will all end up with our preferred solution.
ive turned my old shirts into bags by cutting off the sleeves & sewing the bottom closed. they become the "annoying light groceries bag". or i cut them up, save the picture on the front & add them to a blanket im making. ive made an entire twin/full sized blanket out of old shirts. the sleeves became the bias tape/edging of the blanket, the pictures are the front of the blanket & every other little bit i could use goes wherever i need fabric!
T-shirts are super easy to convert into re-usable bags. You can sew the bottom or cut the hem into a row of vertical strips that are then knotted together. An easy way to do the handles/bag opening are to just cut and hem the sleeves and neckline. Makes a good gift and quick project.
Ropes could be sourced from a Buy Nothing Group or from a secondhand store depending on your location if you wanted to do something more fancy.
