This is a long article but has a lot of great ideas not usually put forth. I didn't have anything to do with this article but I wanted to see what this community makes of it... https://www.noemamag.com/we-need-to-rewild-the-internet/
I liked the article's idea of diversifying the internet for resilience. There's so much of the internet that falls short of its potential because of it's centralized management. Think about ecological rewilding—it sometimes requires active management to ensure no species dominates at the expense of others. Maybe we need a similar strategy for the internet to ensure diversity and resilience. This could start with a radical shift towards breaking up monopolies, or at least enforcing stringent antitrust laws to disperse power. Or is there a way to 'start again' on a new internet, with new rules? Is that what the deep web is? I've never figured out how to access it. I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts along these lines.
the internet is inherently resilient to failure. inter/national undersea cable network links are run by a fairly small number of companies who put up the capital investment. where you have a monopoly in last mile service a concerted effort could be realized to democratize access, something akin to the mesh network wisps where unsuitable coverage exists.
the main issue comes from those fast links between countries which are few. not something a citizen movement could take over or improve unfortunately.
