Top 10 anime betrayals
CCS and OYK before yesterday: Omg finally either of us is going to be DPM
LW: Since when you two were under the impression that either of you are becoming DPM? Shatter Kyoka Suigetsu
Why would he choose his competitors? And I’d avoid OYK altogether, man looks so power hungry like those Korean political drama villain. And he ACTS power hungry. Because he is
does he?
Wait… if LW is Aizen, then who’s Ichigo??
Halimah because like Ichigo, our former president seems to be able to become whichever race the ‘plot’ requires them to be /s
Its a joke, don’t POFMA me.
think either one will be promoted, but after the GE when they can promote one of the 4G. the makeup of the higher-ups remains the 3G/3.5G
Neither can be DPM because either can over-shadow him
Gan Kim Yong gotta be the most unexpected DPM in Singapore's history 👀
Only fitting that he's deputy to the most unexpected PM in Singapore's history.
wong ks also damn buay zai
Agree, probably as unexpected as Wong Kang Seng actually
Gan Bo Yong
Grace Fu looks like that old counsellor no one wants to see cos her methods are old and ineffective.
She’s the one who told me to eat other meat when chicken prices raised. Until today my fav chicken rice store never dropped their price
Her house legacy will ensure she has a seat at the table regardless
house legacy?
Dolores Umbridge
Jo teo leh?
This PAP everything also can. 3-2-4-5-5 formation also can jalan nbcb
5 keepers best formation
Best for shifting goalposts
Can you all sub out that aging casemiro LHL
Istg LHL would be a better CB than Casemiro at this point
Who is this new minister Lee Hsien Loong? Another SAF general parachute isit?
Literally retirement age parachuting into a senior government position
Nepo baby. He's Lee Kuan Yew's son
true... BG Lee Hsien Loong
I more interested of how to pronounce his name?
You can Google if you don’t know
The real question: How did GKY beat CCS and OYK for the DPM role?
I thought at least one of CCS and OYK would get to be DPM but upon further thinking, it doesn't make sense for LW to appoint a peer as DPM, at least in the short term. He'll be a rookie PM, makes sense for him to appoint experienced DPMs to help him out. Previously under LHL the DPM role was an understudy type of thing and the DPMs were seen as potential future PMs. But unless something goes terribly wrong LW is going to be PM for the foreseeable future, so the nature of the DPM role has to change - it's not going to be an understudy/next PM position anymore. More of a Hand of the King type thing. I must say though it's a bit bad for the optics when they've been harping nonstop about the 4G leaders.
I love the Hand of the King comparison. GKY was LW's mentor so it made sense as well.
When LHL first became PM, he had Tony Tan and S Jayakumar as his DPMs. Perhaps LW took that advice and went for the more experienced.
Great explanation. I think you are right. You won't want another peer ready to pounce on you or get to keep watching over your shoulder when you are just taking over a new role.
I’d avoid OYK because man looks like he would want to steal the seat. He probably wants to steal the seat DPM or not lol
Cotton Chan, not so popular with the regular folk. So nice face uncle Gan it is
Lao jiao, safe pair of hands, imho.
Is it technically possible for the PM to remove Grace Fu and replace her with someone like Louis Ng?
it has always been possible. but it's whether he has the courage to remove grace fu or not
He has to be graceful about it tho
Bruhhh😹😹
Louis Ng is like the unwanted child of PAP.
Unironically one of the best MPs, though. He's been a rare voice pushing to improve QoL and even important issues like egg freezing.
And I think that’s precisely why the common citizen values him over other ministers. To me, he appears to be the most genuine at championing legitimate concerns we are facing.
yep, hes seen by many as the one to garner popularity votes from citizens but will probably never go beyond that. i only hope those in the clouds can see his value and give him a much bigger portfolio.
It's so weird that so many ministers multi-portfolio and we have Louis sitting on the sideline.
Bruh, give some roles to other people la
Had me laughing at the “New” label under LHL face
"Lawrence's first Cabinet" sounds like a children's picture book
Very unusual for a DPM to not hold another ministerial portfolio concurrently... HSK will almost certainly step down from politics very soon.
He had a severe stroke. If I were him I would think of retirement and spending more time with myself and my family. He was likely convinced to remain there to help keeping things stable for a while more
Maybe he will take back the old Finance Minister role from PM Wong?
I think the two neighbouring countries will have the Finance minister position be held by the PM for a while more
HSK fucked up at MOF with the SkillsFuture fraud case. Something like $40m were given away to shell companies.
Of course we will never be able to directly link this to HSK, but it was under his administration at the time. There was a change in the Finance Minister right after the news broke about this, and also news that he was out of the running for PM. Just my theory but I guess he screwed up there.
SkillsFuture is under MOE, how on earth is this case even remotely linked to MOF or HSK?
what's the east coast plan ah
Someone gotta draw a ORBAT, whose under who, the hierarchy...
Genunine question - how many of these ministers are actually experts in their fields for example does the health minister have any experience in healthcare?
In my contry the health minister usually is a doctor or worked previously in a healthcare managment. Internal affairs is a former judge. Also by law half of the minister should be women. (not in SG).
I like ministers who worked before in the private sector, with experience outside of politics and not those who finish school and jump to the politics to grow his pockets and walllets.
I like the idea that the health minister should have a background in healthcare, the internal affairs in law and etc.
But the law stating that half the ministers are women (And I say this as a female myself) means you also risk losing out on the best quality minister just because of the diversity quota that needs to be filled.
As a woman in IT , I wish the female minister for Communications and Information was actually qualified in the Information Technology field .
Similar with the Minister of Health, We actually do have a few qualified Doctors in PAP but they are doing Ministry of Defence , Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Communications and Information.
The actual Minister of Health is an economics grad.
it's really messed up.
Question to those who might know better than me: why are (some) ministers assigned to a role in which they have no experience or education? Is experience in politics sufficient to perform in the role due to work with other committees and experts?
Because they have perm secs for actual industry knowledge
In the past that may be true. But nowadays, Perm Secs spend most of their career rapidly rotating between ministries (under the Admin Service). For instance, during my 2-year NS stint, I've gone through three different division commanders. That speed also applies to the wider public service.
Even their stints as Perm Secs tend to involve rotating completely different ministries with barely a few years to a post. Heck, it's more likely that the Perm Sec is less informed of the ministry than the Minister who's been there for a longer time.
This is why Philip Yeo calls them "temporary secretaries" instead.
That may be true, but I feel some positions definitely demand some technical knowledge - I'd want the Minister of Finance / Minister for Trade & Industry to have economics background, for instance. Or the Minister for Law must at least have been called to the bar.
Industry knowledge / expertise helps as a leader in the below: - Your subordinates will lose respect if they always have to explain simple concepts to you in a ELI5 fashion - In a similar vein, you need to properly understand what options you are presented with, and the caveats they pose, to even know what questions to ask - You need an intuitive sense of how ground sentiments may differ from data presented, so you don’t get smoked
I disagree with the first point. At C-suite levels, explaining concepts in a ELI5 fashion becomes a necessary skill in any industry, public or private, tech or otherwise. It’ll just be a fact of life.
Also, if you’re in a high enough position to be briefing your minister or your CEO, you’re very likely to be tapped to brief external parties or even media as well.
Don’t have exposure to C-suite levels but I suppose the details get very abstracted away there so I get what you’re saying. But, I would think it’s good as a leader to always ‘trust but verify’?
For a technical position you can't beat industry knowledge. As an IT professional, if I had, say, a accountant with the right leadership skills but not the technical understanding, it would take much longer to explain a problem or an issue and they aren't going to grasp the technical nuances as easily as my current boss from the same prior role as me does.
Your thinking is so short sighted. A good leader NEEDS to have industry knowledge and experience. How else is he or she going to stand in international stages and conferences and speak with industry leaders? If everything is done by the executive sec, then there is no point for havign the leader in the first place. A leader needs to front the group in various situations and stages. A leader also needs to build up a strong network to be able to leverage it for his group, and to do so, said leader needs industry knowledge and experience to be able to talk on the same level as industry leaders.
Each of them represents their own house. Check family tree
Looks like evangelicals are dominating the board.
The 4G team look like pushovers, especially on the international stage. Not optimistic about our future with these leaders imo.
whats the ELI5 for this?
Agree. Internally I feel like hedging my bets and planning to leave Singapore within a decade...
poor keechiu so low on the list
u/keechiu what say you 🥺
Actually he is first among 4g leh
when is indranee going to actually helm a ministry?
Other than LHL himself, possibly Shanmugam and ofc Tharman. None has given me an impression they can lead. Their speeches I hear just don’t have that gusto and eloquentness in them.
Tharman was the best candidate for PM; Shanmugan is only suitable as the "right-hand man" for the PM.
Shan is like an officer in the military, where by the men "salute to his rank, and not to him."
feel the 4g lacking those who can stand big in the international stage. They need someone like vivian, shamugam etc in the 4g
wolf warrior-ing random economist articles =/ standing big in the international stage
Vivian and Ng should stay on. I don’t see any of the 4G capable to run MFA and MINDEF at this point.
We have so many parachute generals in parliament and none can run mindef? What a shocker! Lol..
Only thing they can run is LIFE run LOL
It’s the vibe they give off. I see the past 3g they are like dominant in international stage, current ones a bit more docile. Ask them domestically no issue but lacks that X factor. Ng Chee khern has it though but he’s not a mp
Shanmugam and CCS can take over MFA and MINDEF
Shanmugam was MFA before Vivian. I think he's too combative to be representing us on the world stage, given the geopolitics today.
CCS was a MG no? Him taking mindef would be a good fit.
CCS is capable of any ministry that is focused on getting things done and not so much PR
CCS perhaps.. but the former… nope please
🤣🤣
That's gonna be Tharman's job soon. LW cannot, that's why they prep Tharman to be external facing if he is needed
Local broadcasters busy spamming the outgoing PM achievements kinda paints LW in a bad light.
Why so? After a recap of all the work (mostly international) done by LHL, it doesn’t instill any confidence that the new PM can even match 20% of LHL’s calibre.
Great to see Lee Hsien Loong switch from ST to CM. Interested to see how Heng Swee Keat adapts to his new role on the LW.
Would you invest in a public listed company in which the CEO double-hat as the CFO?
The midfielders Lee and Teo got to ensure they control the game otherwise the lone striker and wingers up front may get isolated.
Heard this new SM like not bad
Isn't there a conflict of interest for the PM and the minister of finance being one person?
Why they put PROMOTED in green for Lawrence but didn't put DEMOTED in RED for Hsien Loong?
ORD loh!
Tan See Leng is the ultimate parachute. Your average GP four years ago suddenly have enough experience to be Minister for Manpower.
Bruh TSL was the CEO of Parkway Hospitals. He was making $5m+ annually in this role (can see investor relations report). I'm quite sure he has a higher net worth than the rest of the ministers in Cabinet excluding LHL
Shanmugam was the senior partners at Allen & Gledhill. That is a very well paying position.
his pay as minister is what his tax used to be... almost all of them took pay cuts to become ministers but shan really win liao lor
Was he an average GP?
Damn weird. He's in some weird tuina massage cult with several of the ministers. Probably made some impt friends from there...
Please get rid of OYK
What did he do?
Nice to see so many new fresh faces.
This one more like 3.5G rather than 4G leadership
this new minister lee hsien loong looks like a nice guy. should we give him a chance?
So many redundant offices. All these titles just so they get ministerial pay. By right should be just backbenchers
wah i thought LHL retire sia
So no change? FM and PM? The SM role should be scrapped.
Lawrence looking at Anwar Ibrahim being the PM and Minister of Finance and went 'Imma do that too'
Lets hope sgd don't end up like rm though
Wong, Heng and Gan look like brothers
The CEO and CFO gonna be the same person? Dang
2024 Singapore Lions Lineup has arrived.
Who will be pulling the strings from 15th May?
"New"
Very weak team
ALAMAK COULD WE NOT HAVE AN EDUCATION MINISTER WHO SPEAKS GRAMMATICAL ENGLISH?
Still waiting for the day when a WP MP becomes remotely in the cabinet.
We have got to progress from a credible opposition to a credible opposition with ministerial experience. If not, opposition MPs will forever be stuck at entry level... What if, a big if scenario, the incumbent government becomes out of favor/loses mandate, then we have ZERO backup because we didn't give any of the opposition any real chance at doing actual ministerial work. That will be a real disaster for Singapore. All these eggs in one basket for that political power game...
Unfortunately this is a sheer pipe dream... just being too optimistic lol
When WP MPs become ministers, they are no longer the opposition. They become part of the government. And they can no longer oppose because under the Westminster principle of cabinet collectively responsibility, ministers are required to support the government in public. If you can’t accept it, you resign.
If you want opposition MPs with ministerial experience, one way for it to happen is for WP to win the election and form the government, only to lose in the next term.
Or for PAP to lose the election to become the opposition.
Or for PAP and WP to form a coalition government only to part ways at the end of term.
The government system that we have (where the majority in the legislature forms the executive government) kinda prevents that. The backbenchers that get passed over might revolt (cue Skywalker “you’re in the council but we don’t grant you the title”) and your government no longer commands the majority.
If you’re the ruling party, you wouldn’t concede ministerial positions to another party, that just signals that you’re “the same as X party” and makes you look politically weak. The majority party of the day has no incentive to “upskill” other parties.
Only times I’ve seen this is with coalition governments, smaller legislatures (where there’s more ministerial positions than majority needed to survive a no-confidence) and the US, where their Cabinet appointments are made by the executive (legislative have no say in nominating, only confirm ing them).
Less a cabinet, more of an old folks home
Why are we paying for 2 senior ministers.
Why LHL not considered promoted to SM 🤔
Grace fu and Josephine 🤦♀️
And 1 of them probably the worst of the lot.
I care more about competency than gender.
Kee Chiu is minster for education? No wonder our education system fails to produce any creativity lmao
Prime minister and finance minister? What are we? Malaysia? Oh wait...
Looks like the Lee Dynasty has fallen..
Supposedly a cabinet that represents change to new generation but both DPM are 10 years older than Larry 🤣
A mix of the young and the old generation is good. The old have experience which the young can tap on. It helps keeping the transition stable.
Tomorrow mini circuit breaker to celebrate
Yawn, same old, same old. Very out of touch. LHL has long had his time, move on. Jeez. Does he really not have anything else or better to do.
All smart parents be like, ah girl ah, 3 out of 19 seats and only minor roles for females. Don’t ever limit yourself due to outdated gender norms but know what you’re up against. Always ask for a longer table and never sabotage another female, work together but damn if they ever tell you, you don’t have to stand alone sometimes or don’t have to fight the tide. Sorry to say this, women who reach the top are always stronger and smarter than 5 men minimum. It sounds about right, from my own work experience in SG. Glad they’re there and watching to see how amazing they will be!
only 2 malays hor I tot singapore is malay country
Except for the appointment of GKY as DPM and a few promotions, the rest more or less, remained the same or were expected. There is nothing much to it other than a little touch-up to show that something is done. LOL.
Nevertheless, a more drastic change post-GE 15 would be more likely.
