Too easy to register a company in singapore. And because it isn't illegal, the directors (basically patsies) don't even get in trouble with the law after the company gets sanctioned.
The guy behind the scenes with the money just moves their biz to a new/different company.
lan jiao scmp. the report said near Singapore, not in Singapore waters. We can only exert control within our port limit, we dont have naval power to go out and check what goes on probably in the south CHINA sea. the sanctioned oil is probably going to china through us as well
we also not the ones buying the sanctioned oil
Of course. SCMP has some spites with Singapore (maybe to protect/promote HK).
Have seen them randomly shooting Singapore every here and there
China geography where the rules are made up and the lines don’t matter.
Xilly but true
Things you can say to China and in the bedroom:
"Oh, so we're doing THAT now? 😏"
"走后门"
🫢
China: The South China Sea belongs to us except when things go wrong, then it's someone else's responsibility.
You write like this, the headlines not spicy ma hahaha
So, just Malaysia, ya?
Can sleep now.
article seems to have been published by reteurs first.. but still scmp should have done better not to reprint this article
we dont have naval power to go out and check
Formidable class frigate: bruh
MRCV: guess im useless before i was even built
Endurance class amphibious assault ship (literal purpose is to do modern equivalent of D-day landings): the fuck do i do then
okay maybe we do but can u imagine the shitstorm if we park our frigate next to the oil container and board them on international/china/malaysia waters.
as far as i know we go all the way do some live firing exercises then go home le.
You mean international and SEA waters... China's waters are pretty far up to their coast last I checked. The INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED maritime border at least.
okay maybe we do but can u imagine the shitstorm if we park our frigate next to the oil container
That one different story
Whether we physically can or not is what im referring to
well ... nobody would think the German submarines we just bought will only cruise around at the bottom of Singapore waters right ...
I mean not much they can do to an oil tanker in peacetime
Like what are you gonna do, surface and ask them to stop? If so its a fantastic way to let potential enemies just get a good close up look at some top secret equipment on your sub
i mean ... torpedos are capable of surfacing too ...
some serious case of deep fried hollywood brain right here LOL
"Why aren't we torpedoing oil tankers???"
Username checks out
Then you'll like Russia.
that one good for spawn camping ships that come out of home base
We do have the naval power. This is a navy that has led CTF 151 in Aden multiple times.
hes talking about money flows from banks lanjiao sinkie. also SG navy do patrol internatiknal waters u sinkie frog.
We only follow UNSC Resolutions not US OFAC. US OFAC is largely obeyed by Financial Institutions but that is financial services. This is logistical chain
But if you are on the OFAC, most companies will avoid you like a plague.
Most, except smalltime greedy SME non-financial businesses
Singapore wouldn't exist as you know it if the US decided to sanction Singapore financial services. Probably best to do what big daddy that pays the bills wants.
I'd like to see them try. Without Singapore as a friendly port they have no way to cut off shipping from the Indian Ocean reaching China in event of war, and no friendly ports at all south of Thailand.
Singapore has the US by the balls which is why the Americans never do anything but talk. Singapore has joint military exercises with China every year and the Americans haven't done a thing about it. Even in the 90s they didn't dare do anything but talk.
Of course an Aussie would assume every country is an American vassal like his own. Do a shoey to celebrate your own idiocy, bogan.
Ah and the classic Singaporean racism comes out... what a surprise.
These are US sanctions.
What obligations does Singapore have to enforce US sanctions? What jurisdiction does Singapore have to enforce these sanctions in international waters?
Oil trade in USD.
Some oil trades in usd. How do you know if a particular cargo of Iranian oil is trading in usd or not?
If it is just doing sts in international waters there might not even be a trade going on there.
This is legitimately asinine. The vast vast majority of oil trades in USD. Using the word "some" is a gross understatement.
If it is just doing sts in international waters there might not even be a trade going on there.
You're telling me that the Iranians would ship their oil to international waters for fun and then u-turn the ships around?
You think oil needs to go on those cruises to nowhere? Why else would they be in international waters?
Why is that Singapore’s problem?
Because American soft power exists
Well that goes without saying, so this is a demand from the Boss
Lmao did you just inadvertently discover realism exists
Whats your point? Are you just trying to be a prick?
How is pointing out something obvious and answering your question "trying to be a prick"?
I mean if there are oil that doesn't trade in USD, wouldn't Iranian oil be the most likely candidate?
That’s why they need to negotiate with us.
That only addresses the first part. What about the 2nd?
Suka suka arrest Iranian ships in international waters then how will sg flagged vessels pass the straits of homuz in the future?
Erm.. read up on how we were the pioneer group of nations for the PSI initiative since 2003.
https://www.nti.org/education-center/treaties-and-regimes/proliferation-security-initiative-psi/
So, this is for WMDs. But to me this is precedence for proper diplomatic negotiation of any sanctions enforcement..
https://www.nti.org/education-center/treaties-and-regimes/proliferation-security-initiative-psi/
The goal of PSI is pre-emptive interdiction, which includes detaining and searching ships and aircraft as soon as they enter PSI members’ territorial waters or national airspace; denying suspicious aircraft over- flight rights; grounding planes when they stop to refuel in member countries or in states willing to cooperate on a case-by-case basis; and boarding and searching ships registered in a PSI member nation or operating under a flag of convenience of another state prepared to authorize an interdiction in a particular instance.
The link you posted says this initiative only applies within territorial waters and not on high seas. Seizing the cargo or vessel in international waters would be considered piracy.
Putting aside the issue of international waters, the Greeks had arrested a vessel with Iranian cargo and were forced to release it after retaliation by Iran. So unless Singapore is capable and willing to defend all Singapore owned or flagged vessels passing the straits of homuz, I just don't see the benefit of being involved.
Agreed on the amount of risk to shoulder for high seas interdiction, guess we’ll have to leave the risk-benefit analysis to our diplomats.
Alas, this isn’t like those drug interdiction operations where they are less politically prickly.
The goodwill of the USA? How would Singapore's economy look if US multinationals pulled out?
US MNCs are here because of goodwill? They will pull out just cuz Biden admin asks them to?
So they are willing to pull out because we won't help them stop china from buying from Iran but they somehow won't withdraw from China and won't stop trading with China?
Singapore is a tiny economy no foreign company needs to be there.
If US says to Singapore "do this or you might find yourself in the wrong end of sanctions against Iran" what can Singapore do? They have to do as big daddy says.
Yes US companies can and will be used as an economic weapon. You think big tech isn't closely aligned with the CIA and dept of defence? You think US banks aren't aligned with the US govt?
"The package included a measure that imposes sanctions on foreign ports, vessels and refineries involved in the trade of sanctioned Iranian petroleum products. The so-called Stop Harboring Iranian Petroleum Act also includes sanctions on entities involved in ship-to-ship transfers of Iranian oil."
You read the link you posted? It says there is limited impact in near term.
See this. It talks about sanctioning foreign ports (not countries) which would not apply here anyway since the STS happens in international waters. Also talks about sanctioning entities which are basically companies that can be registered in a few days.
What obligations does Singapore have to enforce US sanctions?
君要臣死,臣不得不死
Unilateral US sanctions are not UN sanctions. They can fk off tyvm.
US kaobei sg, scmp as mouthpiece of china tries to sow discord. Colour me surprised.
Oh shoot am i not supposed to spell it out?
I am not saying this in support of anyone, but The US of A is a lying and self-serving hypocrite in breaking the sanction it imposed on the world on Venezuelan oil.
What's worse is that only they can buy, but not others - See for yourselves.
The Cuban embargo is inhumane too.
Communist state
careful dude, its the End Of History and Pax Americana is the One True Moral Arbiter in the Liberal Democratic Post Cold War Era
You forgot to type /s. lol
smh when redditors need /s. spelt out for them
Near Singapore Not Singapore
Ehh scmp misquote Reuters ah
Irony would be fueling the US fleet with Iranian oil bought in Singapore.
US can diam diam lah, limpeh says.
Only when the US screws over singapore do r/Singapore users criticise the American regime. Otherwise it's bootlicking the US as usual.
And it’s your problem?
I see SCMP in here, I downvote.
Based.
Noooope. We should stick to following USNC endorsed sanctions. Trust me; we give them a finger and they’ll take a hand.
US is a global gangster. They practise the LAW OF THE JUNGLE!! And they called it democracy.they do what they want and it seems nobody can stop them. Now their congress even voted overwhelmingly not to arrest netayahu!! What kind of nonsense is this? Who recognise the decision of their congress? who? who? Nobody at all. So you see, they do what they want because they have nuclear weapons. So what can you do, uh? 🤔 Needless to say, must support Kim Jong Un. Am I right? Agree or disagree?
USA didn't do anything.
SCMP is a HK news organisation, owned by Alibaba, and is physically located within China's jurisdiction.
They've been getting more and more biased in their reporting in the past decade or two.
This headline totally misrepresents what was said.
The US Treasury official said it was "near" Singapore, not that it was in Singapore, and went on to expressly point towards Malaysia for buying Iran oil and supporting Hamas activities.
Seemed like the USA were hinting for us to talk to our neighbours to stop this regional activity, that's all. (I.e. "they're doing it near you leh, help us talk to them leh please")
They never said we were involved.
SCMP then went on to outright misstate that Singapore was involved.
Which is not what was said at all, according to their own article and various other sources.
SCMP possibly just trying to stir shit between Sg-US relations. Or they just have shitty journalists who tend to interpret things against Sg? Who knows.
Wait, which is the Navy that conducts “Freedom of Navigation” exercises ?
Iran is our enemy
Fuck off la, come to war you better be the first one on the frontline.
Korean president said the enemy of UAE is Iran
UAE isn’t the good guys though.
True
What they did to you?
Make oil prices go up?
Spread religious extremism and destabilise global politics
you talking about the crusades?
I'm talking about Islamic fundamentalistism and great power conflict
ah if only some countries didn’t organize a coup and kicked out their democratically elected prime minister to install a puppet just to protect their controlling interest in their oil reserve 🙂
world police
Ww already well known as money laundering haven so let also include Sanctions busting. We have a number of Singaporeans wanted by the US for dealing with North Korea.
Have you even bothered to read the article? The focus was on Malaysia and Malaysian companies. Oil was being transferred near Singapore, not within Singapore territorial limits. SCMP is well-known to link Singapore to anything negative, no matter how small the linkage is. It's like blaming the developer of a building cos you accidentally stub your toe on a table in a room of said building. I know r/sg love to bash Singapore and Singaporeans, but sometimes don't let facts get the way of your feelings.
Reuters with the more sensible headline
https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/irans-capacity-move-oil-reliant-malaysian-providers-us-official-says-2024-05-07/
That being said, SG companies have been sanctioned by US before https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/international/us-sanctions-firms-singapore-malaysia-over-iran-petrol-links
