How can PMA riders, Cyclists, Pedestrians and other vulnerable users share the tiny little footpaths next to Singapore’s roads? - from AsiaOne - Your grandfather’s road ah? Perspectives from a PMA user, pedestrian and cyclist
Tabloid/Low-quality sourceYou can't blame the car population, they're the real money makers! /s
Seriously though, I've stumbled upon Not Just Bikes on YouTube, and he's opened up a whole different perspective on how to make better cities for bicycles and pedestrians, and it's just as you say.
It's all about the infrastructure, and from experience, Singapore doesn't give any priority towards pedestrians or cyclists or PMAs.

Govt just trying to get the pedestrians to suck it as usual.
Check out tehsiewdai for local urbanism content
Not Just Bikes, Strong Towns, TheSiewDai and City Beautiful are excellent channels. Though Strong Towns is mostly NA focused.
Thanks, more channels to add!
I honestly believe that with more access to walking and cycling, we will also improve our quality of life as we get older.
Forgot another, TransitEvolution is a channel that popped in my feed via algorithm, he does a lot of cycling route tours.
TheSiewDai
tehsiewdai* but yes he offers an interesting local perspective compared to the other overseas channels
Blah typo'd. Thanks for correction.
Every Singaporean is a pedestrian, not every Singaporean is a car owner. Pretty simple which should have priority.
Reclaim lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, get rid of roadside parking, pedestrianise certain road stretches and junctions in CBD.
I live in a "Silver Zone" which has a bunch of traffic calming and quite wide footpaths, more of that please and add a proper bike path. tyvm, the gov has shown that they *can* do it.
Cause these lawmakers probably never have had taken a bus, train ride or bicycle around. Sheltered elites who can’t think outside of their well.
To fix that, maybe we start from fixing the attitude of every road users. All the infrastructure is useless if people refuse to use them correctly.
The lion, the witch, and the audacity of this bitch (article). The title is right though - why are so many people squeezing into “tiny little footpaths” when there is so much space occupied by the roads?
Fuck the cars, it’s time to reclaim that space for walkers, cyclists, micromobility users, the disabled, etc.
I'm pretty sure places like Cross St can give up one of their 5 lanes for a dedicated bike path. But I don't know how traffic engineering works in CBD. /shrug
Sorry, best they can do it paint some red stripes on the pavement and declare it a "mixed use" path. Important business people got important places to drive to ASAP, don't tread on them!
Like LKY said: you need grit to so it. Our 3G and likely 4G will just be complacent and bet on past glories instead of forging ahead with current or even future trends. This is what happens when the society discourages proactiveness for conformity.
We are already playing catch up now most social and economic aspects: traffic, housing, AI.
LTA too busy fucking around with simplygo and erp2.0 to do the things that really matter.
"...However, while LTA carries out regular enforcement against errant path users, coupled with public education, it is ultimately...the responsibility of every path user..."
This article is brought to you in partnership with the Ministry of Transport.
Says like LTA has competently discharged its responsibilities
Pls, there’s an estate near my house with regular BMWs always parking on the double yellow line.
Anyone crossing/cycling has such a tiny gap to go through. What happens if we scratch your car?
Or if I’m turning right on to the path (they’re parked on the right side), I have to come really close to traffic on the major road.
2x 2m shared pavements separated by 8 lane road each lane is 2.2m wide at 18m in total, a 1m center divider and 2x 1.5m grass buffer so cars don’t go into people immediately?
Who’s taking more spaces in our tiny island?
Cars --> Necessity in Singapore. Don't you agree that every one has a car? Professionals have 2x cars too.
Aging society so need cars; Young kids so the family need car; It's not that cars are paying a min 10-15K to own them in the first place.
What the peasant pedestrians are paying ? or cyclists are paying?
We can go on for decades but Car will be the main stay in SG. Only the Rich can afford a car while the rest rely on "car-lite" public transportation.
You do know that pedestrians and bikes has minimal wear and tear on pavements and roads compared to vehicles that less maintenance are required. Considering singapore not having large temp changes our roads are pretty well sheltered from weathering.
The problem is not with car ownership, but unnecessary car usage cause by the perception of ‘i paid so much so i must use it more’. Everyone converging into town with their giant box is not conducive for traffic. Driving your child to school or parents around for the weekend is fine cause schools are not centralised, and people dont all go to the similar place altogether in the 3hrs from 7am to 10am
Population density.
How can so many people share a tiny island?
By using high density transportation - public transport, walking, cycling. Cars and their infrastructure take up a huge amount of land that could be better used to alleviate congestion and improve safety for everyone else. Why should roads be 4 lanes each direction, while pedestrians and cyclists have to share a 1-meter wide sidewalk? It's not a matter of feasibility, it's a matter of political will.
Indulge me for a bit. The Frostpunk game simulator in me thinking if gov banned all electric type of consumer products aside your cars and bikes that pay coe, what would happen to the population. I know lesser jobs for food delivery and more burden to the healthcare resources. Discontent will rise on the low to working class population but I can see the working and middle class more content on the footpaths. But then, people will evolve and adapt. They will apply normal jobs for income. Some get licences or go back office roles. Definitely your grab and foodpanda won't be happy.
Knn instead of reducing the 3m x4 lane x2 way roads you want us to reduce usage of the 1.5m wide path?
I think it’s absolutely genius that they have completely flipped the conversation over to “how can we share these tiny little footpaths and shared lanes together that are leftover by the massive 4 lane road next to it.” When the real question should be “how can we design our streets, such that everyone gets to travel they way they want without having to face conflicts with each with other” - and the best way for that would be ample pedestrain space for people who require mobility aids, a good sized segregated cycle or micro mobility path, bus lanes for public transport, and then a car lane.
If Singapore are truly going to follow through a Campaign to be car-lite we urgently need to cycling, e-bikes, walking, wheelchair etc not Feel like the last place in priorities when it comes to getting about town.
