Cartwright! Cartwright!
She said curse word. I hang up.
You’re not cartwright?!
I know I'm not Cartwright!
no, bonanza
To be honest, The Chinese Restaurant is like my all time favorite episode of the show together with The Parking Garage.
Th Chinese Restaurant, the Parking Garage and the Limo.
It’s definitely one of the most iconic, if you had to show one episode of the show for someone to understand the style of humor I think that’d be a very good choice. All it lacks is the coffee shop and Jerry’s apartment
....and Kramer.
Who? Oh, you mean Kessler.
The old seasons had more iconic episodes, the later seasons had more iconic moments.
Nicely said.
Boy who knew those scientologists were so touchy
No headers, just footers in this chart.
It's the complete opposite of every chart you've ever seen.
The Chinese restaurant is an art house goon
The Chinese Restaurant is the epitome of Seinfeld
Cartwright!
Behold! The Technicolor Dreamcoat
Haha same. I was so angry for about 5 seconds.
you wearin' a piece?
Same. It was an interesting choice to put the column "headers" at the bottom lol.
We're living in a society!
Of course I decide to watch Seinfeld lastnight and both episodes I watched were “The Deal” and “The Baby Shower” and now here we are all talking about it. Weird sometimes
I do love the part when Jerry casually tells George about sleeping with Eliane and George loses his mind.
Back it up. Beep beep beep.
Beep beep beep?
Cable boy. Cable boy.
The Deal. It feels isolated from the rest of the series as if it's trying to set up some on again off again stuff with Jerry and Elaine to run throughout the show. Luckily, they never really follow up on this angle but it still makes this a weird episode.
I agree that it’s incongruent with the rest of the series and it makes total sense it was a network request. But it did give us this little speech:
“You ask me here to have lunch, tell me you slept with Elaine, then say you're not in the mood for details. Now you listen to me, I want details and I want them right now! I don't have a job! I have no place to go! You're not in the mood? Well, you get in the mood!”
This scene alone should disqualify it from being the worst. One of the most quotable lines!
Totally agree. Whole episode saved my George's outburst.
I can hear this in my head and narrated it in George's voice faster than I read it.
It was the last episode of Season 2 to be produced but NBC aired the shows out of order as they held some back until the summer that they thought were too odd or unfunny. For example, "The Chinese Restaurant" should have aired in February but didn't air until the rest of NBC's line-up was in summer reruns as it debuted on May 23rd while "Cheers", which was "Seinfeld"'s lead-in at the time, aired their season finale on May 2nd.
As for "The Deal", Jerry and Larry had no idea if "Seinfeld" would be picked up for a third season so it was either to be the last episode of the short-lived series, or a cliffhanger to get people to check out Season 3 to see if Jerry and Elaine were still together. It was also a non-traditional response to NBC's request to get Jerry and Elaine together as a couple. But that was all shot to hell when NBC aired everything out of order and so the very next episode after "The Deal" was "The Baby Shower", which was filmed prior to "The Deal", and it was like Jerry and Elaine never got together.
ah that explains a lot.
never knew that. this is pretty cool info, thank you
Check out the Wikipedia entry on Season 2 and you'll see production numbers (e.g. 201, 202, etc.) next to each episode to show the order they were made. You can see how so much is out of order and how "The Deal" aired the same night of the season finale of NBC"s other shows, but then during the summer rerun season they aired "The Baby Shower", "The Chinese Restaurant" and "The Busboy" for the first time. Also, you may notice there is no episode under 209 because NBC didn't air "The Stranded" until the middle of Season 3. That's why if you watch all the episodes in the order they aired that George is back working real estate almost a year after he quit. It'd be cool and help the flow better if they had ordered the episodes on the DVDs or streaming services in production order.
Agreed. It feels more like a plot in a Friends episode
the way it ends on a lovey-dovey note has to make it top two of most clashing moment in Seinfeld along with the undercover cop busting the mugger trying to get Kramers mudder money
No this? No.. that?
I love The Deal. The restaurant convo with George is gold.
..gold
I agree that George's conversation in the restaurant is the best part. But I also agree with u/tothesource that it ends too lovey-dovey for a Seinfeld episode. Overall it's a great, classic episode, but I just could have done without that ending.
I’d agree with that but it really has its moments.
Cash!?!
Plus George giving exactly half the amount of cash as Jerry. Too good
And it was such a weird number too
Pure genius
Jews will often give money in increments of 18 as 18 somehow ties to the letters in Hebrew that spell life. It’s a little good luck gesture. Why it’s 91 and 182 instead of 90 and 180 I’m not sure, maybe that would be too much Jewish humor
rounded up the change??
I tell you, I really don't think so-called relationship humor is what this show is all about
I was gonna say this or the The Baby Shower but at least, to your point, the Baby Shower was more in line with the series and not a sort of one-off. Take my upvote.
Hmm. I think I don’t mind the episode overall, but there is a weird vibe in places that feels a little off and a lil cringe.
This, that, and the other winky shrug
Yeah, this one right here. The entire portion where Jerry and Elaine are hanging out is like six minutes long and painfully unfunny. Just an awful episode.
Eating the roommate’s cake or whatever was such a weird bit.
It’s by far my least favorite episode of the whole series, so definitely the worst of season 2
The Busboy- "Seattle is the pesto of cities"
But it gave us; “I never knew I could drive like that. I was going faster than I've ever gone before, and yet, it all seemed to be happening in slow motion. I was seeing three and four moves ahead, weaving in and out of lanes like an Olympic skier on a gold metal run. I knew I was challenging the very laws of physics. At Queens Boulevard, I took the shoulder. At Jewel Avenue, I used the median. I had it. I was there.. and then.. I hit the Van Wyck. They say no one's ever beaten the Van Wyck, but gentlemen, I tell you this - I came as close as anyone ever has. And if it hadn't been for that five-car-pile-up on Rockaway Boulevard, that numbskull would be on a plane for Seattle right now instead of looking for a parking space downstairs.”
It was also one of the first episodes where the main plot moved significantly away from Jerry’s character allowing more time devoted to other characters. That was pretty rare for a star of a show back then to let that happen. This allowed the show to start opening up to so much more.
Definitely in the top 5, probably even top 3 Elaine lines from the whole show.
Get ! Out !
It also gave us "La puerta esta abierta!"
Como se dice… waterbed?
La puerta está abierta.
¡La puerta está abierta!
Who left da door open?
Why was he in charge of closing the door?!?
That whole exchange was great and I know they call back to that in another episode … the speed dial one.
I love the “he says it’s up to the cat now “
No way, the scene where Eliane and the guy she hates wakes up late and she rushes him out is a top 10 show scene
IT'S BROWN!!!
Elaine’s monologue in that one is so good lol
Oh yeah, it's so good! Frantically packing random clothes in her heavy, don't touch me night gown .
i never even realized that about the gown 😂
Agree 100%. The main story line - it just didn't make it for me. It's just so much fluff.
The busboy is a bottom-5 episode in the series for me, but the baby shower is close. It's also pretty awful.
Busboy slightly saved by "shut up and pack!!" which was a top-notch Elaine scene, and the baby shower slightly saved by "what have you done to my little cable boy?"
Watch where you’re going pal you almost knocked my head off.
My husband and I couldn’t finish this one on our rewatch. It was a really off episode.
I think the actor is way too intimidating to be considered funny.
Like Elaine's father
I love this episode
It’s funny because in 1991 that joke really is pretty on the nose and if something Jerry would say at dinner and now is so dated. Not as bad as the “I was gettin’ jiggy with it” joke.
This is one of my favorites actually….
You bumped into me!
Every account on reddit is a bot except you.
The Deal.
It’s not that it’s bad per se but it’s not congruent with the show and they end up as a couple at the end of the episode and then it’s never talked about or resolved. Makes you think Jerry and Larry would have liked to erase that one and take a mulligan.
In their defense, the network FORCED Larry to do the episode.
I don’t submit to forceable massage!
Even more reason to vote it worst of the season and possibly the series.
Or we could not do the show all together
No, NO, NOTHING HAPPENS!
It’s talked about in a later episode when his parents are having a conversation with Jerry on why it didn’t work out again. It was when he brought her along to Florida.
The Deal
The Baby Shower.
What's wrong with the baby shower?
I just think it's the weakest episode of the season. The plots are kinda meh and the whole dream sequence where Jerry is killed by the FBI is so out of place.
What have you done to my little cable boy?
I’m going to go with The Baby Shower.
The only other option I would go with for worst would be The Apartment. I enjoy it but definitely one of my least favorite of the season.
She deserves a baby monsoon.
She deserves Rosemary's baby!
The Deal, by far.
The Apartment
I have to sit this round out. I looked them up and down and love all of them.
The Ex-girlfriend.
Marlene: I can't be with someone if I don't respect what they do.
Jerry….I don’t know sometimes
Jerry: you are a cashier
Look, Jerry, it's just not my kind of humor.
It was just so much fluff
You should come see me on the weekend!
Marlene is a smoke show tho.
I have a hard time buying that George would be okay with Jerry dating one of his exes.
Worst the deal
Personally? The heart attack. It’s not a terrible episode but nothing too memorable in there. At least the baby shower has the dream sequence of Jerry being shot and George being his usual petty self
Bob Sacamano’s introduction and Tor Eckman are pretty memorable I’d say
Didn’t he do time?
No, he’s out now!
He got out!
my name is Bob!
I love the episode!
I’d vote this one for underrated! “Couch grass and cramp bark? I think that’s what killed Curly!”
Cleaver? I once had cleaver as a kid - I was able to lift a car!
You're eating too much dairy.
I’m off hot water.
I’ll mess you up man!
SHUT UPPP
Jerry smothering George is hilarious
Oh cmon. Coronary country?
There was nothing else on!
No way, it has couch grass and cramp bark
That's what killed Curly.
The busboy
Unpopular opinion. I HATE the Chinese restaurant episode. When I saw it was rated as a top 10 episode on most lists, I lost my mind. I don’t get it? Someone explain!
Cuz it was the defining episode of "nothing happens." The network hated it and they had to fight for it. That's why they mention it when they are pitching the pilot in season 4. It is basically the template of what Seinfeld would become and it is probably the most important episode of all time for the show.
Thank you for the reply. I can definitely see the importance for setting the stage for the entire series. It is boring with literally no action at all. They definitely hit the nail on the head then.
That's what makes the humor so good. It's all dialogue. That's why it's funny. To me, Seinfeld is about the dialogue and what they're talking about.
I just watched season 2 for the first time and really didn’t enjoy “The baby shower” that much. curious to see if many people agree
Baby Shower
The Deal.
Baby Shower gets a close second. The entire premise doesn’t work to me.
The deal
The Deal has some good quotes, but ultimately I'd have to say it's the weakest episode for the reasons others have mentioned: it is incongruous with the rest of the show.
I'm cartwright
The Deal, it wasn’t supposed to happen, nothing was supposed to happen.
Then why am I watching?
Because it's on TV
Not yet.
If the one with Farfel the dog is in the second season, then the conversation begins and ends with that episode. Ill-conceived and horrible episode
The Deal is always skipped on my rewatches. Easily the worst.
The Deal
My dad would say "The Chinese Restaurant." He hates that episode with a burning passion.
Your dad is no #1 dad. In fact this guy...he's not my kinda guy
Damn why?
He's says it's because nothing happens. He also dislikes "The Parking Garage." Apparently, them being stuck in the same location really grinds his gears.
Well maybe in theory. But even nothing is something.
You're telling me.
I like them both, but I understand where he’d coming from. I hate the feeling that they dont get to where they’re supposed to. That’s what my nightmares consists of usually.
Nothing happening by is the whole point of the show.
But, maybe something happens to them
"It's a bottle episode."
But seriously, that's what your dad doesn't like. Completely fair.
That’s what I’d like to know!
Same. I always skip that one nowadays lol
The Baby Shower
The Baby Shower!
Definitely The Busboy, but alternatively The Deal just for getting Jerry and Elaine back together only for it to never be addressed again lol
Until Jerry proposes way later! I don’t blame him, she’s got shiksappeal
The Deal, easily. The last “and the otherrrrr” from Elaine is so cringe
The Baby Shower
You’re the insignificant piece of dust!!!
Baby Shower worst- Underrated- The Statue
Let's just go to Sky Burger.
Seinfeld! 4!
The heart attack
The Baby Shower
The Baby Shower
Chinese restaurant, yet popular, the worst episode.
Hey! What stinks in here?!
- Mr. Coan
After a great 30 minutes if internal deliberation, I have to a agree with the great many of you and say it’s The Deal… and I really like that episode. It’s just the rest feel like true “Seinfeld” and the deal doesn’t quite fit in.
The statue
or the jacket
You've upset me with " the jacket"
I found it very disturbing that Jerry wouldn't just explain his situation and tell the dad too bad. Or take off the jacket and just be cold for a few blocks, furthermore in was equally infuriating that he didn't tell Elaine the whole story when she suggested that he do the very thing he tried to do. That being said "pipe down chorus boy" is a top 20 quote. I also really liked how he thought everyone was gay, and his humerous tail gunner story from the war. George's exchange about getting ice with a drink was also quite enjoyable, but it doesn't make up for the before mentioned plot point. And what's with Kramer not giving his buddy his jacket back? He's a mooch but he's not a dick.
Oh, I agree with the infuriating part. That's what makes it a great episode. They found a way to make us BUY IN to this jacket being so amazing. We were attached to it. The scene where George escalated himself, demanding to know the ori e of the jacket, is one of his best in the entire series. "YOU ARE SICK!" 😅
This guy ripped me off!
The Statue. Not the best supporting characters — they’re too broad and absurd. I know people like Kramer as a “cop,” but that one scene isn’t enough to redeem the episode.
This guy ripped me off!
The Busboy
The Busboy
The deal then the statue for me
The Baby Shower
The Baby Shower
The Busboy. Could be the worst episode of the entire show.
The baby shower
I'm not sure.
The Busboy
The Baby Shower
Show fewer posts from this subreddit. There. Thank the fukin god.
The Chinese restaurant is such a boring episode, I wonder if it's in the best of the series
The Cigar Store Indian. Racist Jerry is very unlikable.
The Deal is absolutely terrible
Busboy
The busy Boy.
Or the Jacket. I just personally don’t care for Elaine’s dad’s character and Jerry’s jacket inside looked fine.
EES IN DA BATROAM
(I...I kinda like The Deal...it's cute...)
The Pony Remark is my vote
The Busboy
The busboy
The Busboy
I misread the chart and thought The Chinese Restaurant was voted worst and I was about to flip my wig lol
