Hi all! Im new to the community and looking to get into SAR with drones, I was wondering if drones are utilized in SAR, and if they are... are there careers for this/jobs or is it mainly volunteer? Is it hard to get a job as a drone sar pilot? Is that even a thing? Thanks for the information and help!
If you’re looking for paid work you can try industrial inspection, including wind turbines.
I'm in BC and SAR can use drones here but we contract one of only two companies in the whole province who have paid operators. They do way more work for wildfire than they do for SAR which as far as I can tell is very occasional work for them.
We have our own in-house drones and drone team
Did not know any teams had an internal program. I was aware of the pilot they were running with Kamloops and Kaslo for a while but that's a few years back.
There are paid drone pilots who may be tasked for SAR Ops every blue moon.
Anywhere that has the need for paid drone pilots needs to take a long hard look at their… trail signage? Weather reports? The locks on aged care facilities? I don’t know, but whatever the cause is there shouldn’t be so much work for UAV pilots to justify a paid position.

The local police usually operates a $10k thermal DJI drone because they can afford that. My team doesn't have a drone and they don't think investing in one is worth it since our area is mostly wooded. Plus if there is a chopper in the air we can't operate the drone.
My Sheriff's Department makes extensive use of drones in their day-to-day operations. They provide drone coverage for the SAR team when requested.
I am in the UK coastguard. We use drones in SAR (they belong to private companies but are contracted to us and have coastguard markings). Some fire and rescue services also use them.
Sheriff flys drone. 10 minutes later. Rocks are too hot…can’t see through the leaves…
Drones are utilized in my state for SAR. The only paid folks are sheriff’s office deputies who do a little bit of SAR on the side of their law enforcement duties. SAR is mostly volunteer in the United States. They always need more volunteers that can operate drones.
