Saskatoon businesses urge police to step up patrols to protect property | CBC News
NewsThrowing money at police
addressing poverty, by having a free and functional health care system, access to affordable housing, access to affordable groceries, access to safe and affordable childcare, treatment and rehabilitation for those who seek treatment and heavily supporting families
One is easier than the other, and we live in a very conservative area. "Results don't matter as long as I have my things and the problems don't affect me" mentality at work, and our provincial government isn't helping at all.
And when the problems start affecting them, they just ignore it because clinging to their ideology is more important to them than the safety of themselves and/or their families and/or communities.
Pretty sure that isn't true. Tell that to Fairhaven... Or Mayfair... Or Sutherland... Once it affects them or has the potential to affect them that's when people take action. Till then, it's not their problem...
I'll grant that, sure.
The cynical side of me wants to butt in and point out how they may want real action, but I'm not sure they want what it may actually take to produce the results they want. I suspect they want real action so long as it doesn't upset their ideologies. I also see this in myself: some of the solutions to our societal ills aren't very pretty, but they would work, and I'm not sure if the ends justify the means.
Higher cost of living + less jobs + jobs not paying living wages = more crime
Nah they’re good, no money in that shit.
The police chief kinda looks like a slim Bill Murray
You think he golfed with the Dali Lama?
Personal experience says cops consistently pressure you not to report small crimes that are typically unsolvable. Actively tried to get out of filing reports, even in person at SPS downtown multiple times.
Makes the numbers look good though....

The NSBA is just the most tone deaf bunch of business bros in existence.
Won't someone think of the properties?! Yeah, sure violent crime is up and property crime is down but the police need to do more to protect objects! /s
We know where this goes, because we've been watching it happen in the US over the last few years. First people say the police shouldn't protect property because poor people should be allowed to steal and anyway the stores have insurance, then the stores close down because they can't afford constant theft, then those people complain that there are no stores left.
How would you feel if you owned or worked at small business/non profit and had to deal with consistent vandalism, robberies and theft?
It’s about more than objects, this type of crime greatly affects people too. I understand why businesses are upset.
Not nearly as bad as victims of beatings, stabbings or shootings who may or may not have had their stuff stolen in conjunction with the aforementioned violence.
I'd love it if police would focus on bike thefts but they have bigger priorities. And both homes and businesses are suffering vandalism and theft throughout the city, not just businesses downtown and in the north end. I'd rather see police continue to let data focus policing efforts rather than prioritize the demands of a self-interested lobbyist group.
I'd love it if the city partnered with 529 Garage like other Canadian cities have on your first point about priorities. It does indeed lead to a decrease in bike theft. There doesn't always have to be a "but". We can work towards solutions on multiple fronts at one time.
No it doesn't, insurance exists.
I have a relative who recently had their business broken into. Insurance doesn’t cover the immense amount of stress & work it took to claim everything, recover and repair. They also lost some objects of value that they can never get back or restore. And insurance doesn’t cover everything. I would never wish that on anyone.
Innocent people don’t deserve this and I think it’s fair to ask for help to prevent these situations.
Small businesses are already suffering enough
Stop voting Sask Party then.
Haha trust me I won’t :p
Atta boy
And how exactly would the NDP resolve this? What a braindead comment.
Nobody said ndp. What has sask party done in the 18 years they've had power?
Childrens hospital, added 5000 nurses, added 1200 doctors, highways aren't as shit as they were (the main ones), upped municipal funding by over double (the cities choose how to spend it tho).
Sure, I guess you could say not voting sask party doesn't equal voting NDP, but I don't think many are considering any alternatives, nor do they appear viable.
If they're not paying you to lie on here, you're really stupid.
And if you believe any of that, I'll sell you some beach front property at Willowbunch
Who said NDP?
When you work at a place that gets robbed a lot, you start to feel more uneasy. You never know when someone's going to pull out bear mace or a knife.
That's not property crime.
Insurance costs money. Each time you have to make a claim you pay the deductible and the cost goes up
It's called the cost of doing business.
Bro, just admit you’re a criminal & should be behind bars.
I like bars, what kinda bar do you like?
Enjoy your nihilistic edge-lord era, hope that frontal lobe develops
Ok bootlicker 😉
I am the boot.
It is, but it’s counter to your point that the business isn’t harmed by the crime
No it's not.
Yes the business is directly harmed by the theft financially
That's why insurance exists.
Anything else?
Yes, theft affects businesses and people even when they have insurance
So small business owners and nonprofits should just bend over and spread their butt holes and just let criminals fuck them. Is that what you’re saying? Because if that happens, they are all going to go out of business and all we will have are shitty corporations and even more unemployment
Ok boomer.
You consistently say the dumbest comments in posts.
Thanks 😊
'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' has been a saying for a very long time for a reason. Governments aren't doing enough to prevent and lessen crime. Their policies have made crime worse. Throwing money at police is proven not to work, yet here we are again and again.
You lessen crime by addressing poverty, by having a free and functional health care system, access to affordable housing, access to affordable groceries, access to safe and affordable childcare, treatment and rehabilitation for those who seek treatment and heavily supporting families. When people have their needs met, whether through their own income or government support, there will be less crime. The more our governments introduce American style policies, the more we will see American style crime and homelessness.
