Russian ruble from 1898. Been looking at it a long time trying to translate and having trouble. Finally brought it to a native Russian friend of mine and he said he couldn’t read it. Can any of you read it?
It’s obviously his facial hair, but the way this coin is worn down, it makes him look like he got some egregious lip injections.
Ah. Makes sense
Your friend could not read it because
Б.М. НИКОЛАИ II ИМПЄРАТОРꙎ
И САМОДЄРЖЄЦꙎ ВСЄРОСС.
is written in pre-reform orthography (notice the -Ꙏ no longer written, which makes word recognition potentially more difficult) and in a somewhat archaic font associated with Church Slavonic, with no Й, Є in lieu of Е, Ꙋ ligature instead of У (in РꙊБЛЬ), and a lot of stylistic differences
I believe there's й tho but it's diacritic worn out
Б. М. — это Божьей Милостью?
Ею.
1₽ 1898года. Вопрос: Какой монетный двор и магнитится ли монета?
Серебро не магнитится . Имя монетного двора это абревеатура из 2-3 букв.

By the grace of God, Nikolay II, Imperator and Autocrator of all the Russia(s)
By the Grace of God • Nikolay II the Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias. On the back: 1 Ruble from 1898
I understand both written and spoken Russian and even I can’t read it.
By God's grace Nicholas 2 Emberor and autocrat of all Russia. 1 ruble
I can't read the script on the obverse. Weird font I guess
It’s pre reformed Russian =)
No, just font. This font is called vyaz.
it's both
No, in modern language it would look the same
there's no ъ at the end of words in modern orthography
It is not ъ, it is ь. The word is рубль.
what about императорЪ и самодержецЪ?
We are talking about the other side.
I'm no coin connoisseur but obverse=heads, right? And on the head side there are definitely some yers where they shouldn't be in modern orthography. Also, it kinda strange to say that one single word on the other side of the coin written not in old, but modern orthography, even if it'll look the same in it. They probably hadn't that in mind back then
That's hardly a difficulty. Just ignore all the redundant ъ's.
ГОООООООЛ!

Yeah, showing it to native isn't that helpful because it's old russian alphabet that barely any modern russian can read.
Blud, what are you yapping about, you are either blind or you have something against our alphabet 😂🙏
Bro it's 1898 not 898
"Б.М. Николай II императоръ и самодержавецъ всеросс."
Серьёзно, не сможешь прочитать и понять?
самодєржєцꙏ*
Actually nvm. It actually isn't. Only printing is old fashioned with writing that isn't used novadays anymore, but characters are the same as modern.
Any native should’ve seen this stylized text before
From bottles of Kvass, through any restaurant claiming to serve homely national food, to churches, it would be extremely difficult to avoid it
Even bed time story books
It is just Medieval-themed font. It is as much used now as in 19th century and for the same purposes.
я запросто прочёл и я русский
Old russian alphabet is almost the same to the new one
Everyone can read this.
By the Grace of God, Nicholas II, the Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias.
