So, contrary to everyone’s advice on my recent descovery of Rush, I didn’t go through everything in order. I just let everything play random. I didn’t want preconceptions of certain eras etc. anyway, I discovered The Pass this morning and actually cried in the car. A middle aged man crying like I did when Bambis mother got shot when I was a kid. This is powerful stuff
Neil saved my life.
I’m forever grateful for that.
That song saved my life when I was a kid.
Turn around.
I did.
Me too. Presto was my first introduction to Rush in 8th grade. I wasn't suicidal then, but have had issues with depression since then. Thanks to The Pass, I've never had suicidal ideation beyond intrusive thoughts.
No pressure, but if you'd like to tell more of the story, I'm sure some of us are interested.
One of the only songs on Presto which isn’t just a great song but that the production also serves - to me it sounds “just right” and I wouldn’t change a thing.
The guitar solo is so emotionally perfect for the song too.
It’s like he stripped out every note that wasn’t needed and played pure emotion
Absolutely. I feel like the first 3 tracks really execute the vision that the boys had for them. They’re such engaging and well structured songs.
It was one of the first Rush songs to really resonate with me. I'm thinking I first heard it in 1991...
It’s a rare take nowadays, as it feels like no one dares to criticize the person’s decision to end their life anymore. They’re always the victim. That’s not always the case, though. I think suicide can be an act of hostility or foolishness in many cases. Neil’s lyrics appeal to the ones still living by stripping down the act of suicide and exposing how foolish and selfish it can be.
A friend of mine still hasn’t forgiven his brother for what he did 20 years ago and what he left behind.
I believe those feelings are valid. We do not have to forgive people who shut the door on us.
There’s no way to forgive them. Their gone. And that’s the brutality of the act. There is no way to get closure.
Exactly!
Live version on Rush in Rio is great.
I know the song but I'm going to have to revisit and pay more attention to the lyrics!
Fair warning… it’s … thick.
I saw them play it live a few times. Geddy would introduce it as one of their favorites or one of which they were proud.
Mini rush songs resonate with my life and my childhood
I know you meant many, but the idea of a mini Rush song is preposterous, but intriguing. Lol.
Li'l Tommy Sawyer.
La Villa Miniturato
The Spirit of Transistor Radio
The Water Fountain of Lamneth
The Big Mini (goes around the world)
Y
The Pink Barchetta
Jacob's Stepstool
The Bubbler of Lamneth
Edit: Ah crud, someone basically did that one already. How about Seven Towns of Copper
Mini 2112
Analog Baby
Digital Teen
Yeah. Voice to text....but I could have been referring to the shorter ones. 😜
I'm guessing you're from somewhere shaded in purple below?
You're close...I didn't realize I created a MINI-MEME...😜
One of their best imo!
"Christ, what have you done?!" :(
The first time I heard that I had to pull over and catch my breath. I’ll never forget that.
One of Rush’s most memorable, powerful songs. In my opinion anyway
The last line really drives it home for me. Neil was the best lyricist ever imo. He had a way of speaking that is so rare and real.
No joking. Just thinking of it chokes me up. Don't know why. But that minimalist rhythm that builds to a crescendo behind Geddy's rendering of those poignant lyrics. Turn around and turn around and turn around. Turn around and walk the razors edge.
It is a fantastic song.
I loved Presto when it came out....Saw that tour in Kansas City....great show. Believe it or not, MTV used to play The Pass music video quite a bit in the Midwest.
Still one of my absolute favorite Rush albums, too. I started with this one and worked my way back through the earlier albums as a kid.
I've been listening to that one sometimes lately, as well as the next one on the album, War Paint.
War Paint is another underrated song that really makes me stop to listen to it.
proud swagger out of the schoolyard waiting for the worlds applause
My son was playing this song one day and I to,d hi. It’s about suicide. He’s like huh? I said play it again and pay attention to the lyrics. 🤯
Take a guess what my favorite Rush song is by only reading my flair.
Great song. Very underrated, too.
This is my favorite song and guitar solo by Rush. Truly a masterpiece.
I cry every time. Welcome to the club! Amazing.
I went to a high school where, one year, there were four suicides, all within days or each other, and I personally knew three of them. For a moment, it started to look like it was going to be a horrifyingly regular occurrence.
Out of the three I knew, one was a bandmate and hated the music I listened to.
I'd've given anything if he'd just listened to "The Pass." Just once. It was 1990, and so close at hand.
For those of us whom it saved, or helped, or comforted - thank you for saying so. Believe it or not, it actually helps to know that.

In case anyone needs it
Also a jam by Logic
You won the internet for this. Well done!
Yup same, song makes me a specific way no other song does
There are few songs that properly represent teenage angst without being edgy. It felt the same as Billy Joel’s Second Wind (you’re only human). You have time, you’re messed up, but you get to change.
Best ever…spoke to me in a way no other song has.
That really gets me in the feels.
This song got me through high school. When I got in a low place I cranked that fucker and it was like Neil knew exactly what I was going through.
The pass has good, deep, and serious lyrics like the line Christ what have you done? All of us get lost in the darkness dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter dreamers turn to look at the cars turn around and walk the razor's edge don't turn your back and slam the door on me.The musical instrumentation & arrangement of the track and bass line ,drums, guitar, and keys is tasteful and soulful.🎤🎼🎸🎸🥁🎹🎶🎧👨🏻💼🎼🎸🎶👋🏻
It's been my favourite song since the first tine I heard it :)
One of my favorites.
It's been a frequent repeater in my daily soundtrack since I sat down and appreciated Presto.
Great song. The version on Rush in Rio is really cool too, if you wanna give that a listen
Neil had a gift for speaking to the human condition
