As someone who managed a retail establishment for 15 years…. Oof, there is no limit on what you may assume is the lowest possible level of intelligence

I'm going to give you two answers. The first is my immediate reaction. The second is with empathy.

1. The same reason you are. Why do you need other people to explain something so simple?

2. Different people have different foundations of knowledge. Let's say you grew up with a car loving dad who worked hands on constantly. You'll know how to change tires, assess car issues etc without help.

That isn't necessarily the norm, but to you, it is. Why doesn't Tom know how to change a tire, is he a damn idiot? No, but his dad didn't teach him and he's never had to.

Feelings and emotion aren't special, they're also a skill and library of knowledge you need help understanding. What you consider basic might have never been taught to the person you're judging. You don't need to assume some sob story, but you shouldn't assume someone is dumb because you learned something they didn't because it almost always can be flipped.

Because they're expressing opinions in the form of questions. The most socially intelligent people I've come across don't stop to analyze such questions, rather they effortlessly make others feel understood, and don't judge intelligence based on something so trivial.

As for intelligence, if we look at it as a spectrum, you might not be on the same level as others. Other people might see your post just as irrelevant or poorly thought. For example, you'll find the answer to your addressed question right in your description. Each have their own people, so don't make it personal.

It's understandable to feel frustrated by seemingly nonsensical questions online. Here's a different perspective:

Because people are just that way, man. If you want to go deeper, you could touch on anthropology, psychology, nature vs. nurture theory, socio-economics, culture, superstition, history, and genetic proclivity. Really any number of random things, it's easier to say things in plain understandable language, than in complex arguments and theories, to earn a pat on the back from a stranger that you will most likely never meet. Why waste words?

it doesn't really help when you have an officially measured IQ of 143, because even moderately intelligent people can seem someone dim, and i see scientific study after study (specifically lifestyle related health outcome studies) where the scientists carefully go about collecting the right data in the right way and then just draw a completely laughable conclusion from it, backed by the most flimsy of logic, and when you point this out, they just go "no, my conclusion must be right because i collected the data properly, and the data shows this relationship", and are unable to understand that the relationship might be casual instead of causal

Aside from education, people don't sleep enough, eat healthy or exercise enough. All this can affect reasoning abilities and focus.

Not everyone is "smarter than a fifth grader". Sometimes it's good to get an answer. Sometimes we are the arrogant ones to assume we know better.

As I said in another post, makes me wonder how artificial intelligence--which so many nerds are singing the praises of--will speak to this. So many people all ready can't think or act for themselves. Long answer - what you’re perceiving as stupidity likely has something to do with the fact that brains and built to infer things backwards. We are so masterful at justifying and explaining things that it’s generally done unconsciously. What we experience as perception is far more neurological input than visual input. There are far, far more neurons traveling from the brain to the eyes than vice versa. And so people generally reason in similar ways. They hear some bit of news, experience anger, and then fit explanations to their anger without stopping to inspect the logic that presented itself to them. For some people, it’s literally as simple as “me see thing, me feel angry, thing caused anger, thing bad.” Now they may be able to extrapolate eloquently on this foundation and give all sorts of tenuous arguments; but this is the underlying process.

Rational thinking is built from the bottom up by extrapolating on the truths by which we are most convicted. Literally no one does this. The best we can do is to apply this ideal to our own faulty reasoning methods, but even then the application is after the fact. So not only does it take extra work to think logically, it is essentially the inverse of our natural neurolophysiology.

Your frame of reference is wrong. People are incredibly intelligent compared to basically everything else we know exists.

Some people are brighter than others (though be careful not to assume you're truly that much brighter: the average person thinks they're above average intelligence). But we're most of us incredibly smart. And also incredibly compassionate for that matter (no other animal is so preoccupied with being 'good').

I get your frustration. It can be really annoying to see oversimplified questions and assumptions. People are complex and not always rational, and sometimes they just don't think things through before asking or making statements. It’s just part of the internet experience, I guess.

Keep in mind that the FBI a few years ago said twitter alone had like 80% bot accounts. And now Reddit is censoring their content alot more now. The Internet is not a representation of real peoples thoughts and feelings. It is designed to piss you off and get pissed off at fake people.

There's a trend of people without a lot of intelligence to ask basic questions via reddit. I've literally seen people ask someone to tell them a close hotel to a concert venue.

Lead. Lead up until the 80s reduced our IQ by several million points combined. Leaded gas literally made people stupider, and lead paint / products are still causing issues. Leaded fuel is still used in airplanes. Lead is the answer to so many problems.

Yknow, I felt like a dick after posting this and considered deleting it, but that'd probably be dumber given the fact that I was asking for a reason to my confusion.

The more I've thought about it, the more I realized that I really dislike when people generalize complex issues as having simple solutions. You could even argue I did just that.

Then, on top of that, I come to the realization that even my question doesn't really "matter" in the grand scheme of life.

But if I narrow my focus back to the issue I have, it's more about how I believe the way people talk to each other online is very strange given the amount of issues we face in the world. Obviously, people discuss complex, difficult, and dangerous problems online - I'm not arguing against that.

But there are times when I see a post and just think, "What prompted this person to ask this question that is something they could find the answer to elsewhere?"

Like, I understand asking people questions to understand if they agree with you or if you're just trying to understand why people think or act in certain ways. But there's other questions people ask that are so generalized that it's difficult for me to understand what people are really curious about.

People like simple answers, simple solutions, which explains the popularity of Donald J. Trump.

In a funny meta way, this question literally fits the same pattern it describes. Hell it's even answered by the same glib answer it proposes. "Because people are the way they are. They panic, fret, complain and loathe things that don't make sense at times because we're not always rational".

Why will a group of people at an event insist on crowding one exit door and utterly ignore the doors next to it? They're just dumb and will choose to burden themselves vs possibly look dumb trying something else.

I don't consider myself that smart. But I sometimes am baffled by some seriously stupid things I've seen people say or do. I'm older and more mature now. So I tend to error on the side of well maybe they're young and inexperienced. But even then. Sometimes you just have to be like wtaf?

I work in IT.
There is not a single week that goes by where I don't help someone who doesn't know that a computer / electronic device needs power to work.
I am talking people with 3 TVs, gaming consoles, computers, etc will without fail call and say "Hey this one thing isn't working you suck," only for me to ask if it has power and boom it works.

We are, apparently, the only inherently irrational species. Big brain = big price tag.

I think a lot of kids are asking the questions. They are pretending to be adults because they want adult attention. Also teens seem to think that inane and esoteric are the same. They want to appear philosohical... And btw, this isn't a new thing, it's just more apparent because of tecnology.

People don’t understand the term “subjectivity”

Once you realize it isn't your job to fix them it becomes easier not to be affected.

Stupid is relative and is based entirely up to the observer. One can only measure somebody as being stupid based on their own ability and knowledge.

People that are stupid generally don't know they're stupid because they live in an environment surrounded by people that are pretty similar to their level.

In other words, they haven't been around enough people that are highly intelligent or more intelligent than themselves to realize how much they have to learn.

But then they get on the internet where there are no boundaries and everybody has access to everybody in real time across any distance And they enter a world where everybody is piled together.

You could take a thousand of the world's least experienced and least educated people that have never seen a dishwasher or an electric appliance in their entire life. You could put all of those people in a building that has all of these things where they would all be confused and not know what anything is.

Then you could give them food that's frozen and they can't eat it because it's frozen and they're all getting hungry.

And while a few of them are figuring out what they can burn to cook the food to thaw it out, one person planted in there walks up and grabs a frozen thing and puts it in a magic box and pushes a button. Wait some amount of time and then opens it and pulls out ready to eat food.

Those 1000 people would think that person is a wizard and an absolute genius.

People are molded by their environments and they can only learn what their environment has to offer them.

And sadly everybody environment is not the same. Some people have access to highly intelligent people. They can ask questions and learn things from. Some people have access to public schools that are rated higher than most the other public schools in the country. Some people have really well developed families that are financially well off and they've never had to struggle for anything.

Some people have extremely active parents that are constantly educating their children and giving them unique experiences to learn how to explore the world.

Other people have parents that treat their kids like servants and don't really do anything for them and make them figure out how to fend for themselves and they aren't fostering an environment that allows their children to reach their full potential.

I generally find it is a little bit ignorant to ask why so many people are stupid because it highlights the fact that, such a person has had a better life with better access to things than the people they think are stupid.

It's not stupid people's fault They were born in a coal town where all of their family and friends and relatives and neighbors all think coal needs to come back and they're all die hard Trump supporters.

I could list list thousands of reasons why an area is left developed and not as fortunate as other areas. But the fact of the matter is is that these environments Foster these people.

And I don't think it's ever really going to change because the owners of this country don't want that. They don't want smart people that can think for themselves that are highly intelligent and able to see through tricks. They don't want an employee that accepts a raise because they know a raise is always a raise. They want an employee that denies a raise because they don't want to go into a higher tax bracket.

The greatest power a company can have over its employees It's if it's employees are just smart enough to do their job but not smart enough to know better.

It's statistics. Half of any population is at or below average intelligence. There's a lot of dumb dumbs out there.

Things are the way they are because that’s just how it is? That seems stupid to me. There is always a reason for everything. People are the way they are for a reason and can be explained and investigated from various angles; evolutionary, genetically, culturally, neurologically and others. “That is just how it is” is an ignorant answer.

They have lived different lives than you have. You should think of humans like exceptionally complex computers that build their code through external stimuli, on hardware that is not perfectly good. People misremember things all the time. You live as one of these computers that has, through the sum of experience in life, created the code you operate with. Every other computer is going to have a different experience and thus a different code.

Nuance doesn’t get engagement on social media and humans are rapidly losing the ability to communicate in anything other than engagement.

For 99.999% of humanity, internet was not an option. People had to figure stuff out. We were not mentally prepared for this advancement.

Just look at who we currently have elected for president. It doesn't surprise me at all. This Country is full of people without reasoning skills.

Whenever I see those kinds of posts I just assume they are trying to trigger people to comment so I avoid. Just people looking for reactions maybe? Has this psychological sequence been perfected and used as a weapon and had an enormous geopolitical impact? you bet your ass cheeks. What can we do about it? Don't get triggered.

"Why do people..." is often a good question. There are usually reasons. If people prefer blue to red, maybe it's because places with blue sky and blue sea are good places to live, or because blood is scary. Maybe it's a subject people have researched and found evidence of. Or not. You won't know if you don't ask.

I ask myself this question every day during my commute to work.

The average IQ of the USA is 85% with a lot of 70 IQ people out there. Sad when it should be 100 to 120 average. Must be the water.

Sometimes otherwise smart people just aren't familiar with practical bayesian statistics and just happen dumb-luck their way into being a red-loving human surrounded by a sea of blue-loving people. Other times they may be smart people, but not decent enough writers.

Im thinking the poison they've been spraying our foods with, the over consumption of sugar, lack of discipline being taught in schools, lack of promoting exercise to kids, fast food poison, and then mix all that in with the media lying and not even being shy about it in recent years specifically paid for by lobbyists who want to divide us to line their pockets.

Well, I honestly think it's just a matter of fact that quite a lot of people are very unintelligent. I mean, by definition half of everyone is below the median intelligence... Beyond that, many people are walking around in the world with no more than a 6th grade education at best, even if they technically graduated from high school. They use those very basic reading and writing skills to get on the internet and either read about things they don't understand, or gather information from other people who are just as ignorant as they are.

This is why ppl ask questions. Everyone was raised differently and has different views and some have never heard of anything as absurd as something the next person thinks is totally normal. Some ppl may have been raised to believe blue is a gross color and everyone they ever knew hated the color blue and they can't understand why anyone would ever ever like the color blue. This is why ppl ask these seemingly "stupid" questions, they truly don't understand. There is no such thing as a stupid question.

Half the population have a below average IQ. Those are usually the loudest people, so we assume everyone is stupid.

I've known a lot of people in school that thought they were smart of hot shit and went out in the real world and discovered there are bigger fish. There's always a bigger fish.

And even if you are the smartest, what benefit is it to put others down? Use your intelligence/superior knowledge in a positive way.
