I know a good bit of punk music but I don't usually find much gloomy punk music witch I wanna give a listen too as I love gloomy shit a d I really wanna know if there's anything gloomy n dark in the punk music so any good album I can search or anything?
There isn't a bad song by Joy Division 🖤
Also if you like Joy division, check out Soft Kill.
Last two years ive gotten heavy in punk (traditionally a metal fan) I really beed to dive deep into Post Punk and New Wave. I keep hearing so much about Joy Division.
Joy Division has two albums. Listen to them asap, it takes under 1,5h to hear both of their LPs.
An hour and a half for 2 punk albums? I’ll pass
Well that's why they call it post-punk, even the runtimes of the albums go past normal punk records.
Let’s just call it what it is. Pop
Rudimentary Peni The EPs of RP
Rudi Peni is so fucking good.
Came here to say Cacophony or Death Church, but that one works too.
Came here to suggest Death Church
Cacophony is so bleak
This was what I came here for…Death Church!
This band was a huge influence on me, and my first band in 95 or so the first time I heard them. I also feel like Kurt Cobain must have heavily listened to them in his youth. A lot of guitar similarity there in style.
HA! I was just going to suggest cacophony! You have good taste.
AFI’s Black Sails in the Sunset maybe
The Unseen’s Explode (specifically Tsunami Suicide)
Idk if musical tone those a very gloomy but subject matters 🤷🏻♂️
Was gonna suggest Black Sails as well
Tsunami Suicide is a gem.
I’d even go as far as saying Sing The Sorrow. It’s a little more post-punk/gothy but it has grew on me over the years and is so so gloomy
Black sails is one of my favourite albums, AFI was great back then
I don't think u can get more depressing than dystopia
Dystopia’s Human = Garbage is an all time great.
I was gonna say, any form of sludge is what i go to when i wanna hear something like this
Everything from Flipper
Leatherface - Mush, but really any of their albums, all of which are underappreciated.
Poison Ruïn’s self-titled and Harvest are two great example of modern dark, gothic punk and deathrock.
Wipers - Over the Edge, Suicide - Suicide
Came here to comment this
Off With Their Heads, anything by them really.
Alkaline Trio's "From Here to Infirmary" or "Good Mourning"
Maybe I'll Catch Fire as well
Also Goddammit and the Collection from 2000!
Look up a band called crusades.
Didn't notice you posted this and I tagged all 3 albums. Perfection. Helped me leave organized religion!
The Lillingtons - Stella Sapiente
I love this album.
Rudimentary Peni, Amebix, Corrupted
Amebix! On top of the awesome music Rob is a total nice dude, blacksmith too.
Ceremony has 2 really great albums that fit this vein really well: Rohnert Park and Still Nothing Moves You
You can’t start a punk album much better than ‘Sick’ on Rohnert Park
Pro tip: you can ignore the rest of their albums.
Pro tip: you can ignore the rest of their albums.
Sad but true.
I remember seeing Ceremony at Ramp Rats before they blew up, good times.
They used to be so gd good, man.
I miss Killing The Dream and Life Long Tragedy too... The Phoenix really spoiled me as a degenerate teenager.
In that same vein, did you ever get into Have Heart? I’ve got a little soft spot for that “conscious” hardcore.
I had not, but first listen impression, thanks for the suggestion!
Hell yeah, bud!
👆 He's not lying. Rohnert Park is such a banger; i fucking love that album. It's funny because i have both albums you mentioned on vinyl... and I completely ignore the others! 😅
Crusades- the sun is down and the night is riding in
Crusades- perhaps you deliever this judges with greater fear than I receive it
Crusades- this is a sickness and sickness will end
The Holy Mess- Cande ru de las degas
Night Birds- Born to Die in Suburbia
Been meaning to come back to your comment today. I’ve been listening The Sun is Down and Night is Riding In for the past couple days. Love it. Thanks for the suggestion.
It's such a perfect album. It got such a good mix of highs and lows that I can't listen to it in pieces, I gotta play the whole album
Chain Cult - Shallow Grave https://lavidaesunmus.bandcamp.com/album/shallow-grave-lp
I juuust found out about this band yesterday. The Uninvited has been on repeat all day
Yeah one of my favourite finds over the last few years. I picked it up off Kerry Cardoza's Best Punk on Bandcamp blog: https://daily.bandcamp.com/best-punk/the-best-punk-on-bandcamp-january-2020
I find her blog pretty hit and miss but there are some great underground bands on there.
Check out Bleakness too if you like Chain Cult. Over and Over rips: https://bleaknesspunk.bandcamp.com/album/functionally-extinct
Iron Chic has quite a few
The Gallows - Grey Britain
It’s more post punk/goth but you can’t go wrong with some Siouxsie and the Banshees
Amebix "Monolith"
Generally, if you want to hear gloomy then I’d suggest going down the post-punk rabbit hole.
Check out The Damned’s later stuff. Their first album is one of my favorites, but they get darker as they matured
Agent Orange - Living in Darkness
Misfits -Legacy of Brutality
Dope you like Drain, glad I saw them before they blew up.
Here are some actual suggestions:
TSOL: Dance With Me
Raukous: Apparitions
Tanzler: Recluse
Christian Death: Only Theater of Pain
Second this — Christian Death - Only Theatre of Pain. Brilliant record. Released when Rozz Williams (RIP) was only 19 years old. Guitarist Rikk Agnew would also release fantastic records with The Adolescents, his solo material (check out All By Myself), Social Distortion, among others. A living legend.
I don’t think Rikk put anything out with Social D but did some great work in DI.
You’re right. My bad. Rikk was a member of Social D in 1979 but left before recording anything them. Sources: https://www.rikkagnewband.com/2019/12/15/oc-life-a-punk-rock-royal/#more-66; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Distortion
Yeah drain is one of my favorites!! Thnx for the suggestions
Side 1 of Frankenchrist by Dead Kennedys
The lyrics on the first 5 songs on that album is some of the most chilling lyrics ever put to tape. Nearly hit me with instant depression first time i listened to the album haha
Strawman Army, Tower 7, Double Negative
Joy Division - "Unknown Pleasures"
The Cure - "Pornography"
Bauhaus - "In the Flat Field"
Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Juju"
The Sisters of Mercy - "First and Last and Always"
The Birthday Party - "Junkyard"
Killing Joke - "Killing Joke" (1980)
Christian Death - "Only Theatre of Pain"
The Damned - "The Black Album"
Echo & the Bunnymen - "Heaven Up Here"
Can't believe I forgot Bauhaus! Good pull!
FUGAZI
In this same vein lagwagon
Son of Sam - songs of the earth
Very cool album!
The VSS, Daughters, Murder City Devils
I want to highschool with the dude from the VSS. We used to go car camping in his VW rabbit.
G.B.H- Midnight Madness and Beyond
I love this era of GBH. No Need To Panic is also another great album. They definitely flirted with horror punk and deathrock with those two albums.
Chain Cult - Shallow Grave
AFI - Black Sails at Sunset AFI - Sing the Sorrow AFI - The Art of Drowning AFI - Burials Alexisonfire - Watch Out! Alkaline Trio - From Here to the Infirmary Alkaline Trio - Crimson Alkaline Trio - Good Mourning Heavens - Patent Pending
heard of it but I'm talking actual punk music like DRAIN misfits black flag n shit like that
There’s always someone trying to keep that dumb ass joke alive
Doubt there's anything in that vein, the tempo of the bands you've mentioned doesn't exactly lend itself to "dark and gloomy". The Scream by Siouxsie and the Banshees can get called dark I guess, Unknown Pleasures and Still byJoy Division album won't put you in the mood to party. Yes Sir, I Will by Crass is dark in some respects, but you're probably moving into Goth if you're looking for general gloominess.
When I mentioned those bands I was referencing actual punk music in general..but thnx for ur opinion and such
Drain is actual punk music? Interesting.
Travels by Defeater
Band called "Made out of Babies", kinda post hardcore and/or sludgey, but a punk backbone for sure
Goodbye Blue Monday: Misery-Punk Ruined My Life
Their latest album is dark as fuck ...
Iceage - You're Nothing
Skaven
Yes!!!!!!
Post punk… but Killing Joke.
Always felt Mommy’s Little Monster had a kinda haunting sound.
Saw people already mentioned dystopia, rudimentary peni, Christian death, and chain cult🔥I would highly recommend catholic spit and slaughterhouse
Not punk, but the bluegrass-y, gothic-y band O’Death is good and gloomy.
O'Death is the TRUTH! Southern Gothic Bluegrass punk with beautiful vocals.
Only Theater Of Pain by Christian Death is a classic as is Miami by Gun Club
+1 for the Gun Club!
Dystopia- Humans = garbage
If you’re not opposed to German music you could try „Fliehende Stürme“
Terrible Feelings - Shadows, also anything by Yanka Dyagileva
Great band that I feel about of people slept on.
Poison Idea - Feel The Darkness. Best hardcore album of all time IMO
That's a great IMO, IMO. I have the exact same one!
Creeper - Eternity, In Your Arms
Choking victim, leftover crack, dystopia, no cash
Blacklisted - Heavier than heaven lonelier than god, might be what you are looking for
Thnx I love this!! Its hella badass
Rail Yard Ghosts - Hiræth
The Clash - Combat Rock
Burning Image has several.
Really great newer band The Passengers.
https://thepassengerssd.bandcamp.com/album/under-the-cruel-light
There are a lot of good records where punk bands went post punk/deathrick in the early/mid 80s.
TSOL dance with me which was already mentioned.
Blitz - second empire justice - I feel like a lot of bands are going for this sound right now, most notably home front
Middle class - homeland
Toxic reasons - within these walls
TSOL also did the very deathrock album Beneath The Shadows. That is my favourite album by them.
Tau Cross - Pillar of Fire
Psychocandy by Jesus and The Mary Chain
It's post-punk but, Soft Kill. Choke, Premium Drift EP, and Meta World Peace are my go to's.
The Tension Span album that came out last year is pretty dark and full of anguish. Here's a great song: https://open.spotify.com/track/2Jmzp5cUxsZTQom4tkldp4?si=2f75756c263744bf
Clit 45. Self Hate Crimes is pretty dark lyrically.
Wire - “Chairs Missing”
Try the Mercy Killers. I think they had only one album.
Anything SNfU
There is a lot of punk adjacent grunge stuff, which is super gloomy. I can't listen to any album from then without getting depressed.
T.S.O.L - Change today?
Why hasn’t anyone said Damaged by Black Flag
Get dead honesty lives elsewhere, bad news
Any of Unwound’s albums will do, but New Plastic Ideas and The Future Of What are perfect matches for what you want.
You want doom?
EYEHATEGOD
Weed eater
dystopia
It’s not punk but if you like gloomy music check out the album natural born losers by Nicole Dollanganger.
Maybe some Bauhaus is what you are seeking?
Try coldwave.
Basically anything from Off With Their Heads
The Mentally Ill - Gacy’s Place
Christian Death (honorable mention)
False Confessions
Box car racer
Insomniac is kinda gloomy
Iron Chic - You Can't Stay Here
Most of the horror punk bands like tiger army and misfits type shit or are we talking slightly emo like jawbreaker or some lagwagon? Or are we talking straight nihilistic punk like choking v , GG and Allan Wrench? A real favorite of mine is I Am Crushed by the Vandals - upbeat sounding melody with dark lyrics and a hilarious video.
Arise by amebix.
Belgrado from Spain
Goth and post punk. I'd recommend both genres as a whole. Been listening to a lot of Pink Turns Blue lately, probably a good place to start
How has no one said the Alkaline trio. Goddammit and maybe I'll catch fire are masterpieces. Try trouble breathing from goddammit and maybe I'll catch fire from maybe I'll catch fire. But both of them are fantastic start to finish. Any of their other stuff is good too but I like the early stuff.
I think you want goth music.
Look up any deathrock band. Deathrock is punk but with goth themes and slightly different sound.
Voodoo Church, 45 Grave, Catholic Spit, Naughty Zombies, Horror Vacui, Virgin in Veil, Christian Death, Alien Sex Fiend, Specimen, 1919 (not rly deathrock but might be something u like)
Cursed II always thought it had a dark vibe to it
Lost Sounds
First album that came to mind for me was Weathered Statues by TSOL.
I remember listening to T.S.O.L./Weathered Statues thinking it was so weird how it starts fast and aggressive then halfway through gets gloomy and depressing. Wasn't until like 20 years later I found out that it was a rerelease of 2 EPs they had put together which explained it.
But yeah, Weathered Statues.
Pretty much anything by the Misfits.
Possibly one reason why I don't like the Misfits. Don't hate on me for that, though. I recognize their place in the pantheon of punk rock, I just don't care for their music.
Lathe Of Heaven (2023, NYC)
Red Shadows by TSOL or the entire first TSOL album,Christian Death as well
Not an album but would suicide by choking victim fit
Josef K- The Only Fun in Town
Life long tragedy - hey death. - young - sweet innocence
Circle jerks - golden shower of hits - beat me senseless
Also dig thru pixies, dinosaur jr, flaming lips, fugazi, yeah yeah yeahs, interpol
Blatz- Lullaby
Garmonbozia an older punk band. Very cool dark sound.
Chairs Missing by Wire
David Boring. Hong Kong. Dystopian. Favorite album for several years now.
Anything under the stenchcore umbrella fits this pretty well. Some albums I recommend are “No Sanctuary” by Amebix, “Production Thru Destruction” by Misery, and “Skverna” by Fatum.
Over Pale Bodies by Wet Specimens!
Not a particular album but UK Subs did moody depressive songs sometimes. Flesh Wound, Sensitive Boys, Face The Machine, Sea Of Mars
Lepper fucked up albums
Against Me! As the Eternal Cowboy
Also I really enjoy Bright Eyes
“So What’s Left Now” by The Observers was my favorite gloomy punk album for years.
I think you'll like Agent Orange and Killing Joke
Christian Death only theater of pain Its the guitarist of adolescents rikk agnew playing with his goth side project.good songs
The best thing that fits that description is, as someone else said Wiper's Over The Edge, however let me also recommend the album Strawberries by The Damned, or just any punk albums that went on to inspire goth. Also I saw someone mention Dystopia, if you like those check out Acid Bath.
Pretty much any album from Cancerslug/Alex Story.
I do not know if they count but the track titled "Cruel Bloom" by Converge from their Axe to Fall studio album might be of interest to you.
Anything by Samhain. You could categorize them as almost goth punk or death rock, but it's definitely gloomy. I suggest the album Initium to start with and go down the line from there. It's Glenn Danzigs band after the Misfits in case you might not have known.
American nightmare-background music
The Drunk Elk reissue that Goaty Tapes/House Rules put out a couple of years ago.
Anything by Drunks With Guns.
Post punk. Pornography by The Cure. Can't go wrong with Joy Division.
Might worth check out The bellicose minds - the spine And their 2nd LP (the Horde) is also good. And also 'spectres' from Canada, have 2 great dark Albums. Their later current stuff has more pop, so nothing i would recommend here.
And "the estranged" is a blueprint for that kind of music. There are 3 LPs and a lot of smaller Outputs.
Lost Tribe and the Wraith Crimson Scarlett Annex from Texas Arctic Flowers spectres
Siouxie and the Banshees - Join Hands
The first 2 t.s.o.l. albums all Calabrese records. Misfits samhain, energy later afi records, the first 2 tsunami bomb records. From there you get into post punk, and darkwave.
Cokie the clown-you’re welcome
T.S.O.L beneath the shadows/change today album. The Deathrock compilations hell comes to your house - required listening
Rites of spring, sunny day real estate, early MCR, mineral, brand new
it’s post punk but unknown pleasures and closer by Joy Division
